Turing on RT on a 7900XTX can lead to 39% slower on average vs Raster.
4090 is on average 66% faster in RT than 7900XTX but keep in mind that various titles are CPU bottlenecked with the 4090. With very demanding games like Cyberpunk, Alan Wake 2 and the Monkey game, 4090 is 138% to 400% faster than 7900XTX at Max RT settings.

The Hardware Unboxed video just confirms what I already believed. Ray Tracing still isn't ready for prime time and typically isn't worth the performance hit.

Capcom has sold more units on PC in the first half of FY25 than on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox combined
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/capcom-has-sold-more-units-on-pc-in-the-first-half-of-fy25-than-on-nintendo-switch-playstation-and-xbox-combined/
Capcom has shared its sales for the first half of FY25, and it appears that the big winner here was the PC platform. According to the official graph, Capcom has sold more units on PC than on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.
To be more precise, Capcom has sold 20,025M units so far this fiscal year. From those sales, 54% of them were on PC, whereas 40% were on consoles. Again, the console percentage includes all main three consoles.
Compared to the previous fiscal year, PC digital sales have grown from 48% to 54%. This right here shows how profitable the PC platform actually is for the Japanese company.

Damn, that's crazy. I mean, Capcom haven't released a new game on the Switch since what, Monster Hunter Rise? So it's no surprise that their games aren't selling like hotcakes there anymore. And Xbox is basically Sega at this point, so no surprise on that front either. But it's still crazy that PC's game sales overtook Playstation's!

I wanna say I feel like Streamers helped carry them during Lockdown and sometime after the restrictions were lifted.

I've been watching Vtubers for nearly 2 years now, and all I've seen them do is take promotion deals from the likes of Capcom, or not and just playing Resident Evil 4 and the like. The majority of them being PC gamers or playing on that platform, which in turn would have chat likely buying it on that platform.

Word of mouth is still strong on the net, I'd say more so than marketing, these days I mean (a decade or more ago, marketing was more of a king).

Also Capcom made a deal with GoG recently to release their OG Resi 1-3 games on that storefront, which of course had word of mouth spreading, friends buying, streamers playing it online, etc.

Honestly, I see RT like I see native 4k, neither are worth to me until they are fully realised in their respective fields.

For $k res to be viable to me, I want to see everything in higher resolutions, not just select character models, some slightly crispy shadows and weapons. I wanna see all character models at the same res, blades of grass, foliage, higher LoD's, the lot. Until then I'm perfectly happy with 1440p and keeping my performance balanced.

For RT, it's path tracing and further refinements to that tech, or it's not worth using, and even then, the way devs are now starting to rely on AI like a band-aid is not giving me hope to want to even use RT, if that's how it's going to be used.

A bit funny, that the linked RE2 + RE3 reviews on the GOG-pages are about the remakes.

A bit funny, that the linked RE2 + RE3 reviews on the GOG-pages are about the remakes.

I heard about them literally via a  Vtuber streamer, who I thought was emulating the original Resi 2, and they were like "no, I bought this on GoG today".

My partner is hoping for the OG Silent Hill releases as well. Since we're getting the other MGS collection, I'd hope they do the same (and do it proper this time) for SH.

Also yeah, I find GoG pages a bit random, like sometimes I type into Google X game name and GoG, thinking if a game is on GoG, only to find it being a forum page and not a storefront page lol. I think GoG should try sorting that out, because whenever I search for games on Google that are on Steam, I 100% get links for game storefront pages, not say, Resident Evil 3 Remake Steam forum pages.

Let’s go with the Thursday news:

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Black Ops 6 is massively outselling last year's Call of Duty even though it's on Game Pass, which probably tells you how Modern Warfare 3 went
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/call-of-duty/black-ops-6-biggest-release-ever/
This won't surprise you, but the latest Call of Duty is doing numbers. Addressing investors today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Black Ops 6 isn't only a hit, but it's the "biggest Call of Duty release ever," setting a day one player record.
Nadella must be settling nicely into his new role as Call of Duty overlord, because declaring that this year's Call of Duty is the new biggest Call of Duty you've ever made is classic Activision. Even when CoD was clearly in a down year, Activison's previous stewards always found a metric that it excels in. To be fair, anyone could've guessed Black Ops 6 was gonna break a CoD record or two: It's the first Call of Duty to launch on Game Pass, so it would've been bigger news if it weren't immediately the most-played on release day.
Nadella also mentioned that sales on PlayStation and Steam are up 60% over last year. A positive sign for the series' health, but without sales numbers to compare, I wonder if this speaks more to how much of a stinker last year's Modern Warfare 3 was.

The Epic Store gives away two games:

Next week, they’ll give away Deceive Inc. and the Apex Legends™: Ash Free Unlock Bundle.

GOG has a couple of interesting things:

Steam has four new deals:

Humble Bundle presents The Dark Pictures And Little Nightmares Horror Collection, with up to 7 games to get during 13 days: https://www.humblebundle.com/games/dark-pictures-and-little-nightmares-halloween-horror-collection.

And Fanatical has a new Star Deal and two bundles:

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Steam now requires developers to tell people when their games have kernel mode anticheat
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/steam-now-requires-developers-to-tell-people-when-their-games-have-kernel-mode-anticheat/
Kernel mode anticheat software is something of a divisive topic. Many players believe it negatively impacts their games' performance and could potentially compromise their system's security; but many players also want something done about all the unscrupulous players, and broadly speaking, kernel-level anticheat is the most effective way to keep things clean. It is, as they say, a conundrum.
A new addition to Steam won't change any of the above, but it will at least make it easier for people to know what's going on and react accordingly: A field on Steam store pages will now enable developers to clearly indicate what sort of anticheat software their games are using, and in the case of kernel mode anticheat, will require that disclosure.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

World's biggest modding site announces new paid mods policies, with caveats—'as long as it isn't to the detriment of the free modding ecosystem'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/worlds-biggest-modding-site-announces-new-paid-mods-policies-with-caveats-as-long-as-it-isnt-to-the-detriment-of-the-free-modding-ecosystem/
NexusMods has announced a bunch of new policies to address the issue of paid mods, which have pleased some and hacked-off a bunch of people. This has been a long-running topic for the world's biggest mod site, as modding itself becomes more widespread and potentially lucrative for certain creators: These days it's all-too-common to see a neat mod then, with a sinking feeling, realise you have to sign up to a Patreon to get it.
"Over the past year several game developers have introduced varying paid modding schemes, including Bethesda's Verified Creators (Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starfield) and InZoi's Creations Marketplace," writes NexusMods community manager Pickysaurus. "As a result, we've received a lot of requests for clarity on our paid modding stance and our paid modding rules from a number of our users."
Following consultation with modders, NexusMods' new policies allow creators to link to monetised content, with a few caveats. The major new rules are:
Linking to paid mods: If the uploader has free content on Nexus Mods and would like to link to the place to purchase their paid content, we will allow it subject to the Advertising Limitations.

  • Lite/Trial/Preview/Demo versions of paid mods: We will not allow free mods to be shared where they represent an inferior version of the mod with features stripped out to promote the purchase of the full version.
  • Patches for/Dependencies on Paid Mods: We will not allow any patches or addons for user-generated content that requires payment to unlock (this specifically excludes DLCs offered by the developer—including DLCs that bundle items previously sold individually such as Skyrim's Anniversary Upgrade). Equally, if a mod uploaded to the site requires a paid mod to function, it will not be permitted.
  • Collections requiring paid mods: Similar to mods, if any collections are not functional without the user purchasing paid mods, they will not be permitted.

That all seems reasonable enough, but this is the internet, and with mods in particular there is a large part of the audience that just doesn't have any truck with the idea of paying for mods. Clearly some of the NexusMods team feel that way too, because the post goes on to clarify why the above policies have been chosen.

First Red Dead Redemption Mod completely unlocks the framerate
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/first-red-dead-redemption-mod-completely-unlocks-the-framerate/
Red Dead Redemption Remastered has just been released on PC, and its first must-have mod is already available for download. This mod will unlock the framerate, allowing you to play the game at framerates over 144FPS.
Going into more details, this mod sets the 144FPS setting to have an upper limit of 1000FPS. Since most PCs won’t be able to hit 1000FPS, it basically means that the framerate is now completely unlocked.
I’ve tested the mod and I can confirm it works. Plus, there aren’t any speed or physics issues when playing at framerates higher than 144FPS. Everything appears to be working correctly.
>> There is a less than 1 minute video of this mod. And by the way, the game seems to be very CPU-bound. I’s something to keep in mind.

The Red Dead mods are here, including cursed beardless John, resurrected Arthur, and Neon Genesis Evangelion in the old-timey theatres
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-red-dead-mods-are-here-including-cursed-beardless-john-resurrected-arthur-and-neon-genesis-evangelion-in-the-old-timey-theatres/
After a mere 14 years Red Dead Redemption has finally released on PC, and the good news is that Rockstar didn't botch this one. Far from the GTA Trilogy style disaster some feared, this is instantly the best way to play a classic, and a game so good that some even prefer it to the superlative sequel.
Of course, that doesn't mean Red Dead Redemption is flawless. Room for improvement abounds and modders have already started tweaking anything they don't like about the game. "I like the way he looks without a beard" says Serhishols, announcing the John the Beardless mod, and what more justification do you need?
For some that's not enough. The Arthur Morgan Restoration Project is apparently "a joke that's why it doesn't look good", and yet someone is taking it quite seriously: "Replaces John with the far more superior Arthur Morgan." Arthur may well be far more superior, but not looking like this.
It really does get granular. Want a mod that changes the colour of the UI icons to those used in the 2009 beta? Et voila! PlayStation button prompts? No problemo. There are the usual array of mods that let you skip startup logos, but how about one that specifically only removes the Double Eleven logo "for a more original RDR experience"? Boom. Oh we're not even close to done. You want 3X the resolution on the weapon wheel, you got it. "EVER WANT CLOSED UP CAMERA? HERE IT IS!" Loot faster! Upscale that grass!
The one I enjoy most is the laser-targeted All Chickens Killed and Rabbits Saved. I promise this save file makes total sense if you've played the game's opening stretch, or as modder corpiss puts it "Just a save file for OCD people who don't want to keep replaying the long ass intro with all rabbits killed and all chickens saved from coyotes."
Finally, "John Marston watches Neon Genesis Evangelion in a movie theater, circa 1911." A+, no notes.
>> The article only has a couple of screenshots, and the link to the Evangelion mod isn’t there.

Let Down City is a new DLC-sized fan expansion for Fallout 4
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/let-down-city-is-a-new-dlc-sized-fan-expansion-for-fallout-4/
Modder ‘WitherAwayyy’ has released a new DLC-sized fan expansion for Fallout 4, called Let Down City. This mod brings a huge underground area that has multiple workshops, player homes, voiced merchants, and items. It also has a new companion, NPCs, and a radio station.
Going into more details, Let Down City is a mod that the modder has been working on for quite a few months. The modder wanted to put a bit of a cyberpunk dystopian theme on Fallout 4, and this mod is the result of it.
Let Down City has multiple workshop settlements, and player homes for both kinds of players. Players can expect tons of OP gear, and items to find. There are also some terminal entries, notes, and holotapes scattered around to interact with.
The modder also claimed that he has added ambient tracks from Halo, Silent Hill 2+3, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy, and TES IV. Plus, there are a few secret areas for you to discover.
>> There is a well over 20 minutes long video of this mod running on top of the Fallout London mod.

Baldur's Gate 3 players have downloaded 50 million mods since official support was added, and Larian is 'glad [it] could facilitate' 10,000 players renaming Withers to Bone Daddy

While Baldur's Gate 3 modders have been tinkering away since early access, it was only with September's Patch 7 that we got official mod support, with Larian sharing its modding toolkit and supporting it with an in-game mod manager. Since then, 50 million mods have been downloaded.
Larian celebrated the milestone on Twitter, noting that 10,000 of those downloads come from dedicated Withers fans who know the man's true name: Bone Daddy. It suits him.
>> While the article is about that milestone, it also has links to some mods it mentions, like the Bone Daddy one.

The PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted returns to reveal the 25 most-anticipated PC games this December
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/events-conferences/the-pc-gaming-show-most-wanted-returns-to-reveal-the-25-most-anticipated-pc-games-this-december/
In the 1990s, the UK's greatest philosophers came together to issue one request: "Tell me what you want, what you really, really want." This was followed by something about wanting "zig a zig ah", which no one has yet been able to translate. Either way, PC Gamer is bringing that spirit of inquiry back when the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted returns with full fanfare this December 5 at 12 pm PST, 3 pm EST and 8 pm GMT.

Ubisoft's got yet another NFT project, and man do I feel bad for the artists whose great work is being wasted on this garbage
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/ubisofts-got-yet-another-nft-project-and-man-do-i-feel-bad-for-the-artists-whose-great-work-is-being-wasted-on-this-garbage/
Despite the fact that we've sort of universally agreed that NFT games aren't going to happen, the nature of game development makes it so we're bound to be seeing doomed projects fly their unwanted freak flags high on the proud ship "Sunk Cost". See, videogames take a few years to make, so whatever trend was popular a few years ago will only be surfacing now, unless you're willing to go all Early Access about it (which plenty of NFT projects have).
Ubisoft has gotten a big run up and leapt onto the bandwagon already halfway to Oregon with Champions Tactics, a Web3 (that's "NFT" in tech bro speak) PVP game which, looking at this trailer, has an art department that's utterly wasted on it.

Microsoft closing Arkane Austin was a 'dumb move', says founder and former president
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/microsoft-closing-arkane-austin-was-a-dumb-move-says-founder-and-former-president/
WolfEye Studios boss and Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio understandably remains frustrated by Microsoft's decision to kill off Arkane Austin earlier this year. Colantonio started Arkane back in 1999, which grew into two studios, Arkane Lyon and Arkane Austin, in 2006. His last game, before departing the company in 2017, was the whip-smart, extremely paranoid sci-fi romp Prey.
(...)
"I think if you look a little bit, it's obvious that Arkane Austin was a very special group of people that have made some cool things and that could pull it off again," he says. "I think it was a decision that just came down to, 'We need to cut something.' Was it to please the investors, the stock market? They're playing a different game."
>> He also said why he left Arkane.

Monster Hunter Wilds' arachnophobia filter turns mosquitos into, okay, brace yourself—raunchy humping slimes that over 100,000 people think are jumping their bones

Arachnophobia filters are downright fashionable, nowadays—though there hasn't been a one-size-fits-all solution to them. From turning spider-zombies into terrifying floating leeches to going full-tilt crab mode, the solutions are about as scattershot as they are considerate. My least favourite, however, has now surfaced—Capcom has turned Monster Hunter Wilds' mosquitos into slimes that are… uh. Just take a look.

Apex Legends' CEO announces that a 'large systematic change is required' after EA didn't hit monetisation goals
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/battle-royale/apex-legends-ceo-announces-that-a-large-systematic-change-is-required-after-ea-didnt-hit-monetisation-goals/
If you tuned into EA's recent earnings call yesterday (who am I to tell you what to do with your time), you probably noticed a lot of commotion about Apex Legends and how its new battle pass didn't really hit it out of the park.
"Apex Legends launched with significantly more new features for casual and seasoned players alike, including more modes, a new map, and new anti-cheat software," EA CEO Andrew Wilson says. "Following changes to the battle pass construct, we did not see the lift in monetization we had expected."
>> It’s worth noting, as the article also does, that this is a case of not making as much money as they want, not about not making money.

One of the best parts of Deadlock being in closed beta is that players are finding weird bugs and glitches they can exploit for some good laughs, and the latest is a doozy. Somehow, one player managed to use one of the new heroes' abilities to infinitely grow other characters.

My immediate reaction to Animal Use Protocol, elicited through an image of a grim-looking monkey holding a mouse, was what you might expect: Why is that monkey holding a mouse? https://www.pcgamer.com/games/dragon-age/before-you-play-dragon-age-the-veilguard-you-really-should-change-the-annoying-wayfinding-settings/
Dragon Age: The Veilguard features a bevy of handy accessibility and interface options to make the chunky quest to murder a couple of pesky elven gods smoother—everything from text size settings, to how the game lets you know if an object is interactive. But there are a couple of little helpers that you'll want to tweak immediately, unless you want to go on a guided tour of Thedas.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies players have found an easter egg that'll give you 2,000 free points, but you have to be good at trick shots

We're still in the early phases of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, so that means there's still some uncharted territory for players to explore and uncover, and the latest discovery is an easter egg points hack in Zombies.
"Basketball easter egg found," one player who goes by SmartGuy316 says. "Make the ball in the hoop for a free 2,000 points (The Ball is sitting in the corner above the gas canister on the WW quest door on the roof). Definitely need to find a good setup of this for speedruns." I'm not sure how many attempts SmartGuy316 had before finally scoring the points, but regardless of the number of attempts, it's still an impressive shot.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, being both a major game release and a huge game in download size, has been eating up my internet for the last week. It seems that's true of most of the US too, according to Comcast.
Internet provider Comcast recently put out a statement (via The Verge) reporting the "biggest week in internet history". In this, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 accounts for 19% of all network traffic coming up to its launch.

Since there’ll be no news tomorrow, I wish all those of you that celebrate Halloween a great night, to those that have other celebrations (like the region where I live) a very good time as well, and to the rest, just enjoy yourself. Until the next time, have a happy and gaming long weekend.
