Microsoft's latest Windows 11 update is reportedly a borkfest that breaks mouse, keyboard, WSL 2 and Wi-Fi functionality
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/windows/microsofts-latest-windows-11-update-is-reportedly-a-borkfest-that-breaks-mouse-keyboard-wsl-2-and-wi-fi-functionality/
Be afraid of the Windows 11 KB5043145 optional update. Very afraid. For reports are in, claiming that it unleashes a borknado of problems if installed.

According to various sources, including HKEPC and Windows Latest, update KB5043145 for Windows 11 versions 23H2, and 22H2 is causing problems including outright bluescreen crashes, loss of keyboard and mouse functionality, USB ports on the blink, plus WSL 2 and Wi-Fi issues.

Windows Latest says that Microsoft has confirmed it is aware of the problem. However, there is no word on any official remedy, for now. As an optional update, KB5043145 is not supposed to download and install automatically, though some reports indicate that may be happening anyway.

Western Digital Spins off all Flash Products to the SanDisk Brand
https://www.techpowerup.com/327175/western-digital-spins-off-all-flash-products-to-the-sandisk-brand
Western Digital made a significant change to the way it sells its products, which sees the SanDisk brand return to prominence. The company spun out SanDisk.com as a separate website, with product information, support, and in select regions, online retail, of all its NAND flash-based products, including SSDs, memory cards, USB flash drives, etc. Meanwhile, its main website, WesternDigital.com, now only lists out non-flash products, such as hard disk drives (HDDs), NAS, and other enterprise hardware such as rackmount DAS or NAS.

And it seems that Moore's Law Is Dead latest video or whatever has caused an impression, because there are two articles talking about different parts of it:

AMD's new RDNA 4 gaming-GPU-for-the-masses said to be delayed but will probably still be available before the Nvidia competition
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/graphics-cards/amds-new-rdna-4-gaming-gpu-for-the-masses-said-to-be-delayed-but-will-probably-still-be-available-before-the-nvidia-competition/
A few weeks ago, we reported it looked like AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards could arrive at CES and therefore beat Nvidia's next-gen mainstream GPUs to market, the idea being that RDNA 4 isn't going to compete at the high end and Nvidia traditionally only releases top-end variants of any new GPU family at first.

Well, we have an update, and at first glance it's not the best news. YouTube Channel Moore's Law is Dead (MLID) reports that AMD is delaying RDNA 4. But not because there's any problem with the new graphics architecture itself.

Instead, the reported issue is that AMD and its selling partners still have a glut of existing RDNA 3-based graphics cards to shift. And most of those need to sell first, because the new RDNA 4 cards will make the old stuff look hopelessly overpriced for the performance they give you.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D To Feature Significant Clock Speed Boost
https://www.techpowerup.com/327149/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d-to-feature-significant-clock-speed-boost
We've known about the upcoming AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D for a good long while now, and previous leaks and rumors indicated that it would offer a rather significant boost in gaming performance thanks to changes to the 3D V-cache amounts and layouts. Now, a new leak, which purports to show off the official retail packaging for the new CPU, suggests that clock speeds will get a boost over the existing AMD Ryzen 7 78000X3D.

Both seem feasible.

Bloodborne looks unbelievable on PC in this latest comparison
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/bloodborne-looks-unbelievable-on-pc-in-this-latest-comparison/
Last month, we informed you about the release of shadPS4 Version 0.3.0. That version of the PS4 emulator packed all the visual improvements that its team has been making for Bloodborne. And, from the looks of it, a new version is already out. Not only that but Bloodborne now runs better than ever on shadPS4. In fact, it’s almost on par with the PS4 and PS5 versions.
So, here is a video comparison between the PS5 version and the PC version of Bloodborne. The PS5 version is basically the PS4 version, without any PS5 enhancements. On the other hand, the PC version is the game running on shadPS4 V0.3.1.
What’s crucial to note is that the PC version is the vanilla version. In other words, it doesn’t have the HD Texture Packs we shared last month. So, basically, the PC version can look way better than what is being shown here.
From what I can see, the only thing that the PC version is missing is the fog. Once the shadPS4 team manages to fix this, the emulated version will be on par with the PS4/PS5 version. Again, this is nuts. I wasn’t expecting Bloodborne to be feature-complete on shadPS4 until late 2024. However, here we are in October with a game that is almost fully emulated.
Not only that but performance still appears to be great. I still can’t believe that Bloodborne runs with 60fps on shadPS4. I mean, older PlayStation consoles have major issues with their emulators. Yet here we are with a PS4 emulator that runs silky smooth. It’s unbelievable.

Part two of the news:

Dragon Age: The Veilguard devs talk redesigning the game after BioWare bailed on the whole live service thing in 2021: 'I never personally saw it as a reboot'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/dragon-age/dragon-age-the-veilguard-devs-talk-redesigning-the-game-after-bioware-s-bailed-on-the-whole-live-service-thing-in-2021-i-never-personally-saw-it-as-a-reboot/
Dragon Age: The Veilguard might be good or bad, depending who you ask on the PC Gamer team—we're a little split on it, a downright smorgasbord of varying levels of grumpy and old about the entire thing. While the game unhappily comes saddled with the usual pre-order bonus nonsense, it's still a relief to me that this thing isn't a live service game—because it very well could've been.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was, initially, supposed to have substantial multiplayer live service components. However, after the catastrophic failures of BioWare's Anthem, EA decided to strip the in-progress sequel of all its multiplayer mechanics, focusing instead on making a single-player RPG.

I've been learning what Deadlock's items actually do, thanks to this player-made build calculator that I can keep open in my tabs
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/moba/ive-been-learning-what-deadlocks-items-actually-do-thanks-to-this-player-made-build-calculator-that-i-can-keep-open-in-my-tabs/
To a newcomer, Deadlock's builds and special items can be confusing, especially if you're more of an FPS player than a MOBA one. You can always practise making builds in-game, but it can be a little hard to think big-picture when you're trying to stop Adams from crushing your lane. Luckily, one player decided to create an easy way to do so.

Cyberpunk 2077 engine lead says some of its legendary launch bugs happened because the alternative was even worse: 'Either you show a T-pose, or you hard crash… we prefer not to hard crash'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/cyberpunk-2077-engine-lead-says-some-of-its-legendary-launch-bugs-happened-because-the-alternative-was-even-worse-either-you-show-a-t-pose-or-you-hard-crash-we-prefer-not-to-hard-crash/
As someone who played Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time only after it got its big 2.0 overhaul, I feel confident saying that it's one of my favourite RPGs of the last decade. (...)
Wasn't always the case though, was it? (...)
But it could have been worse, if you can imagine it. In a big breakdown of CDPR's comeback after the game's disastrous launch over on Eurogamer, Cyberpunk's lead engine programmer Charles Tremblay broke down just why the game was so legendarily buggy back then. It was a mix of factors, as you'd expect, first among which was the fact that old-fashioned spinning hard drives just weren't up to the kind of streaming the game required. But also? Sometimes you could either bug out or crash the game completely, and the devs preferred option one.

After years of silence, the legendary life sim Spore has crawled back to life like a 3-eyed amphibian emerging from a primordial alien sea
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/after-years-of-silence-the-legendary-life-sim-spore-has-crawled-back-to-life-like-a-3-eyed-amphibian-emerging-from-a-primordial-alien-sea/
Spore was a pretty big deal back in the day, a life-sim RTS from famed Sims studio Maxis that gave players the opportunity to guide the evolution of a species from primordial soup to interstellar exploration. It was huge, ambitious, and unique, and alas, it was not great: The ideas behind it were bold, but the actual gameplay was pretty flat. We said in a 2018 retrospective that "in many ways, Spore was No Man’s Sky before No Man’s Sky"—minus the redemption arc.
All these years later, could that redemption arc still happen? Extremely unlikely, yes, but not entirely impossible, because Spore is back, baby. The first update posted on the Spore website in more than five years says the game has a new team within EA and an official Discord server "where you can keep up with the latest news from the development team, participate in contests, and get to know other players of Spore."

Tim Sweeney says Epic Games is now 'financially sound' after last year's layoffs and Bandcamp fumble
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/tim-sweeney-says-epic-games-is-now-financially-sound-after-last-years-layoffs-and-bandcamp-fumble/
Like so many tech companies, Epic Games grew aggressively at the start of the 2020s and then suddenly declared that it had made a mistake. The Fortnite and Unreal Engine maker cut over 800 jobs last year and maimed and sold off Bandcamp, a website it had purchased just a year earlier.
(...)
At an event for Unreal Engine developers today, however, Sweeney declared that the ship has been righted.
"We spent the last year rebuilding and really executing solidly on all fronts," said the CEO. "I'm happy to tell you now that the company is financially sound, and that Fortnite and the Epic Games Store have hit new records in concurrency and success."

The games industry is undergoing a 'generational change,' says Epic CEO Tim Sweeney: 'A lot of games are released with high budgets, and they're not selling'

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said during his address at today's Unreal Fest in Seattle that while there's still uncertainty about what exactly the metaverse is, the continuing growth of Fortnite—and the failure of a number of high-profile big-budget games to meet expectations—is proof that it represents the future of gaming.

Destiny 2 is adding new maps and factions to the superb Onslaught mode next week, but Bungie confirms no new 'shiny' weapons
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/destiny-2-is-adding-new-maps-and-factions-to-the-superb-onslaught-mode-next-week-but-bungie-confirms-no-new-shiny-weapons/
These days, when I log onto Destiny 2, which for my sins I still do most nights, the conversation with my clan mates has a funeral air. The talk invariably turns to what Bungie should do to stem the player base from bleeding out in the wake of The Final Shape expansion, and the backdrop of mass layoffs at the studio. The one thing we all agree is that the brilliant Onslaught horde mode, which was introduced as part of the Into the Light update in April, needs to be a cornerstone of whatever comes next.
So, good news! When Episode 2: Revenant launches next Tuesday, it will include a revamped version of the mode called Onslaught: Salvation. Wisely, it ticks off almost all the features from players' wishlists: Three new maps (Widows Cout was shown during the live stream), two new enemy factions (Vex and Shadow Legion Cabal), and a suite of new defensive upgrades to the tide.

Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios lays off employees to ensure 'long-term success'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/moba/smite-developer-hi-rez-studios-lays-off-employees-to-ensure-long-term-success/
The videogame industry has been suffering a malaise since the start of 2023 that somehow still shows no sign of abating. September alone saw people put out of work at Mountaintop Studios, Airship Syndicate, Evening Star, Microsoft, Midnight Society, Lost Boys Interactive, Ballistic Moon, and Rocksteady. Now it's October 1 and here we go again: Hi-Rez Studios CEO Stewart Chisam has announced the "difficult but necessary" layoff of an unspecified number of employees, saying the cuts were made "to ensure Hi-Rez's long-term success."

Devolver has a new label dedicated to making games based on comics, films, TV shows and 'cult heroes'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/game-development/devolver-has-a-new-label-dedicated-to-making-games-based-on-comics-films-tv-shows-and-cult-heroes/
Devolver will start publishing game adaptations of films, comics, TV shows and "cult heroes" under the label Big Fan, the company announced today. Like Devolver itself, Big Fan will focus on indie studios, which will presumably lead to more risky (or at least more realistically budgeted) adaptations. Think stuff like John Wick Hex, which was not coincidentally published by Devolver subsidiary Good Shepherd.

Leaked screenshots claiming to be from the next Sims game Project Rene have surfaced and fans are in shambles over them
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-sims/leaked-screenshots-claiming-to-be-from-the-next-sims-game-project-rene-have-surfaced-and-fans-are-in-shambles-over-them/
Screenshots that claim to be from a recent playtest for the next major Sims game, codenamed Project Rene have surfaced, and the Sims community is absolutely not picking up what EA is putting down.

And there’s a third part of the news, but don’t worry, it’s short:

The Rocky Horror Show is getting its own videogame for Halloween, and it's a retro 2D platformer for some reason
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/the-rocky-horror-show-is-getting-its-own-videogame-for-halloween-and-it-s-a-retro-2d-platformer-for-some-reason/
A confession: I'm one of those people who just doesn't get The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Don't get me wrong—I can enjoy Tim Curry being sexually confusing in his prime as much as any other red-blooded human, but as a musical it feels like an awful lot of running around for the sake of one decent song.
But perhaps I'll finally be able to wrap my head around it now that it's being translated to videogame form, the one medium I know anything about. That's right, we're getting a Rocky Horror game—and very soon too, with the trailer promising an October 2024 release. Just in time for Halloween!

Starfield's Shattered Space expansion hasn't been a smashing success on Steam: 'Less content than any Skyrim DLC'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/starfields-shattered-space-expansion-hasnt-been-a-smashing-success-on-steam-less-content-than-any-skyrim-dlc/
Starfield's Shattered Space expansion is out now, and unsurprisingly its arrival doesn't seem to have changed anyone's mind regarding Bethesda's cosmic RPG. The consensus, at least on Steam, seems to be: if you dig Starfield, you'll probably enjoy this one. But the lack of new features and a story that doesn't quite hit have left it with a Mixed rating so far.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/final-fantasy/final-fantasy-14-suspends-housing-demolition-on-north-american-servers-after-hurricane-helene-causes-devastating-damage-across-multiple-states/
Final Fantasy 14 has put a stop to its automatic housing demolition across its North American servers following the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Helene across multiple states in late September.

Frostpunk dev's quietly very cool survival game where you manage relationships with your alt-universe selves gets delayed to next year
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/frostpunk-devs-quietly-very-cool-survival-game-where-you-manage-relationships-with-your-alt-universe-selves-gets-delayed-to-next-year/
When I played The Alters at the same preview event where I also tried to establish turbo-communism in Frostpunk 2 earlier this year (it could have worked), I came away very much surprised. Games that pitch themselves as survival-anything don't tend to do much for me; I struggle enough to survive in real life.
(...)
A cool idea that I want to see more of. Alas, I'll have to wait longer than I thought. Despite having an initial release date of this year, the game's been pushed back into "Q1 2025." In an in-character post shared on X, "The Everything App", the devs at 11 bit studios said they were "using this extended time to optimize all mission-critical systems and ensure that every aspect of your journey is as seamless as possible."

Nintendo going to war

Here we go again

I swear to god, ppl have got to stop going around and boasting about the hottest new emulator they've thrown onto the market, because it's just making it easier for Nintendo/Sega to turn around and point blank them every single time.

Also they need to stop pulling ye old "b-buh I need monies". No, emulation/modding is a hobby, not a 1:1 career path like being a Lawyer/doctor, and I wish people would stop trying to make emulation/modding into something it isn't (plus it greatly muddies up the waters for everyone).

As for Nvidia, we best start getting used to 80 series being the 70 models, and 90's being the 80's, because it's been like this since the tail end of the 3000 series and knowing Nvidia, they won't stop that train (because most ppl don't seem to care/catch onto the fact that they've done away with their Titan series and replaced them with the 90 series, which technically replaces the 80 models).

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Agreed on the emulation part. I love emulation, but some things are better to keep quiet.

Yeah, the devs should have kept quiet and it should have been something that was done on the backend privately.

Also showcasing and having a patreon and what not - causes a lot of issues especially if the platform is still active.

Hopefully what happened to the Switch emulators wont mess up the future of the Switch emulation scene, maybe it'll be okay in about a decade from now but who knows.

Still sad about what happened to the 3DS emulator, being a victim of the Switch emulator that got locked down  - being from the same dev and all.
