I'm so hooked to the piracy/naval battles in ACIV.

Damn, I can see why some people have hundreds of hours for ACIV.

Is that why Ubisoft is making Skull and bones?

Too arcadey naval battles in ACIV is the reason I dropped it halfway through. I like my Age of Sail battles to be way more dependant on the wind than what Ubisoft made in Black Flag.

I see your point, but it's an AC game. No one should expect realistic gameplay from that franchise.

This mind-blowingly open-ended RPG might be the next Baldur's Gate 3: 'If you have the patience, you could wipe out an entire town by just turning everyone against each other'

Unforetold: Witchstone was maybe the biggest surprise for me at our PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted showcase. The Spearhead Games CRPG almost evokes Larian's first Divinity: Original Sin game in its presentation, but instead of pursuing cinematic RPG production values, Witchstone is like an alternate evolutionary path emphasizing the construction of an open-ended, RPG sandbox.

Oh FFS, is this going to be a thing now, "journalist" who can't tell their ass from their head will be comparing everything to BG3 (which is actually quite funneled and non-open ended).

That said, I always prefer CRPG teams that, given the choice, don't give a damn about more than descent presentation and go for substance, and Unforetold: Witchstone might be just the one.

It's always the same situation. Game ABC becomes a sensation and then every journalist and even publisher tries to sell an upcoming game as the new ABC, even if they have little to no thing in common.

In my opinion, that kind of false advertising hurts the game more than benefits it.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB reportedly launches in February 2024 at $179

The biggest problem with that card is, as usual with Nvidia, the name. It has less cores, VRAM and memory bus. This card should have been named 3040.

The only positive I see is that, at 70W, it can run from the PCIe slot.

Here is my Steam year in review https://s.team/y23/ddvhqbp?l=english

*pic*

My longest streak was 348 days.

Majority of the playtime is between Cookie Clicker, Cell to Singularity, and Clicker Heroes. These three usually are running in the background.

ANOTHER EDEN is the one most actively played. Though I alt-tab frequently from it.

Galactic Civilizations IV is the last among the top played.

I've finished quite a few games, such as Submerged, OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, Machinarium, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius, LOST EMBER, Sable, The Smurfs - Mission Vileaf, Ben 10, Dodgeball Academia, Lucifer Within Us, Planet Stronghold, Star Control: Origins, Broken Age, Pumpkin Jack, Primordia, Unpacking,

348 days?! I was very burnt out after my 174 days despite playing games from very different genres, and you managed to double that. Wow. How can I learn that superpower?

I was worried that the 2022 data gets lost.

But in the Steam Profile, you can switcch to the former years:

1023 games/365 days = 2.8 games a day... How many hands and heads do you have to be able to do that?

Also, regarding your time playing VR, maybe you look for longer games? Because the slice of VR games played is bigger than the playtime in VR games, so they must be kind of short.

What I played most:

And the types of games I tend to play:

The Tower Defense is almost all Bloons TD 6, while Capitalism is probably mostly Recettear.

Yeahhhh... still not very big on AAA titles.

Not bad at all!

I think I should have played more Beat'em'up games so I could make the graph better:

Shame that I can't finish Sniper Elite III, or that side would have been a tiny bit longer.

That will be the replacement for the 2060 6GB. It's not terrible at that price but if you have money buy an 8GB model at least.

I thought it was supposed to replace the 16xx? It's basically a 2050 (A mobile-only card who despite it's name is actually an Ampere GPU, GA 107 to be precise) with 6GB instead of 4GB and less bandwidth due to the narrower bus.

That would also fit better with the price, as it is $20 over the MSRP of the 1650 Super and somewhat under the MSRP of the 1660 when those released.

Edit: And yes, at that price, I'd rather take an 8GB RX 6600 over this.

16xx cards do not support DLSS (or ray tracing), so the new 3050 will be an upgrade in that regard. My guess is that nvidia will phase out these 16xx cards eventually.

They already do, there's only a few cards available and those who are tend to be 1650 or even just 1630 cards, so basically stuff they couldn's sell yet.

Even with DLSS, those won't be any good. And RT with just 6GB and it's low performance is a laughable idea.

Apparently (Which is true) the only game I have played on Steam in the last 12 months has basically been Sins of a Solar Empire. Haha

Really invested no time or money into steam this year.

Idk feels like the 8GB model should be at that price in 2024 while 6GB should be $120-$140.

To be fair, it does have 20% less CUDA cores and potentially 25% less bandwidth than a standard 3050, so we are probably looking at a part that is poorly named. Should be a 3040 6GB.

3030, as a continuation of the 1630 and 1030, would fit the curent naming scheme better. After all, NVidia didn't have any x40 cards anymore since Kepler. But for that the performance hit is probably not big enough yet.

My year in review is down from last year, and tbh it's mostly due to the fact that I know I'm feeling disinterest in gaming long-term. This year alone I've only been playing during some periods throughout the year, and it's mostly been coop based sessions, not gaming on my own (PZ only saw me playing it 3% for single player, the rest was coop based).

I've also been playing more Heroes of the Storm with friends I've made on Battlenet (a few sessions a day). Next year is likely to also plummet all the more for me as I work on improving my irl side of things (selling my house, working into drawing again, health related stuff, etc). As much as I want to try new games like Dragons Dogma 2, prices like that just deter me from wanting to try games like that, so it's either old games for me or indies.

The Wednesday news, part two:

Sony applies to patent dynamic difficulty settings that respond to your performance, one year after EA did the same thing with controller settings
https://www.pcgamer.com/sony-applies-to-patent-dynamic-difficulty-settings-that-respond-to-your-performance-one-year-after-ea-did-the-same-thing-with-controller-settings/
Sony has applied to patent systems that automatically fiddle with "parameters that change the difficulty of the game" based on your performance, a patent on the World Intellectual Property Organization's website reveals. (Actually, the patent reads "difficultly" at the time of writing, so Sony may in fact be referring to the implementation of dynamic cults. But probably not.)

EA rebrands Frostbite with a cuddly new hand as it says its studios are now 'free to develop on any engine they choose'
https://www.pcgamer.com/ea-rebrands-frostbite-with-a-cuddly-new-hand-as-it-says-its-studios-are-now-free-to-develop-on-any-engine-they-choose/
Publisher Electronic Arts has rebranded its Frostbite engine, with the aim of better reflecting the tech as a "platform for collaborative innovation".
In an announcement on the publisher's website, EA introduced a new brand direction for the engine, saying the it "signals not just a visual shift for Frostbite, but a philosophical one, with a renewed focus on partnership with our teams and collaborators." As part of this, it has created a new logo for Frostbite, which is still a handprint, but is softer and more contiguous than previous iterations.
There's a detailed explanation about why the logo looks like this which we'll get into, but most important point in the announcement is that "EA game teams are free to develop on any engine they choose."

Streets of Rogue 2 promises to mash up Deus Ex and Dwarf Fortress in a chaotic immersive sim 10,000 times bigger than the first game

I am unreasonably excited for Streets of Rogue 2, the follow-up to 2019's best immersive sim in which you could play a vampire, hacker, gorilla or bartender, which means I've been eagerly devouring information about it ever since it was announced in October last year. Lucky for me, then, that developer Matt Dabrowski is kicking off a series of devlogs giving a look at the game's features, inspirations, and, naturally, development.

The Finals might be a bit less sweaty now it's cracking down on cheaters
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-finals-might-be-a-bit-less-sweaty-now-its-cracking-down-on-cheaters/
Embark Studios' The Finals is one of the most interesting multiplayers to come along for a while. It's also a brand new game from a new studio, and it unsurprisingly has some issues at launch. (...) However, it's possible that the issues weren't entirely due to the game's skill-based-matchmaking or dog-eat-dog structure. It could also be that we've simply been playing against a bunch of big ol' cheaters. In the wake of the game's surprise launch during the Game Awards, reports of cheating over on Reddit have spiked enormously, with many of these cheaters believed to originate from China.

Former Mass Effect lead writer Mac Walters says the success of the Legendary Edition helped convince him to leave BioWare: 'I don't want to do any more Mass Effect after this'

Mac Walters amassed an enviable list of credits during his nearly 20-year career at BioWare on games including Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, eventually rising to lead writer of Mass Effect 2 and 3 and creative director on Mass Effect: Andromeda. He then stepped into the role of production director on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, before leaving the studio in January 2023. In a new interview with MinnMax, Walters talked about his reasons for leaving, saying he was prompted to do so in part by the success of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

WoW shows off four Hero Talent trees from its upcoming expansion The War Within, and it looks like the Augmentation Evoker's meta chaos is spreading to other specs

Blizzard have released a sneak peek at some of the Hero Talents from World of Warcraft's upcoming expansion: The War Within. Hero Talents are meant to be evergreen dashes of spice to the game's existing talent system—ones which mainly add "class utility [and] defensive bonuses."
>> We have the 2024 roadmap, that includes a Cataclysm Classic Beta coming soon.

3 months after Blizzard's president sank WoW players' hopes of a swashbuckling adventure with the words 'No pirates', roadmap suggests: Yes, yes pirates

World of Warcraft revealed its roadmaps for both retail and Classic yesterday, and while there's plenty of exciting news—including a confirmed Summer release window for The War Within—one particular stop on the road hit me like a cannon full of grapeshot. A black flag with a skull and crossbones.

Bethesda is far from done with Fallout 76, unsurprising given 17 million people have jumped in since the Wastelanders update
https://www.pcgamer.com/bethesda-is-far-from-done-with-fallout-76-unsurprising-given-17-million-people-have-jumped-in-since-the-wastelanders-update/
We often discuss the impressive turnaround of games like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk, but Fallout 76 should probably be included in that discussion. While the game launched as an empty wasteland back in 2018, Bethesda has since added a ton of new features to make it feel more like, well, a Fallout game. NPCs, new locations, more fulfilling quests, iconic Fallout factions like the Brotherhood of Steel, and downright weird stuff like alien invasions. It may have suffered a torrid development, but the general consensus is that it's now a Good Videogame.
What's more, Bethesda is far from finished building out its Most Improved virtual son. To celebrate the end of the year, and Fallout 76's fifth anniversary, art director Jon Rush took to the Fallout website to reflect upon the game's successes, and outline the developer's vision for 2024.

'We would love to explore a new game mode,' says Remnant 2's creative director, which he'd like to 'scratch the same itch' as a wave-based survival gauntlet

Remnant 2's first DLC dropped a short while ago—and it's a pretty good romp. It adds a whole new area to explore, a new class, and some new gear to grab—it also enhances Losomn as a whole, since having the DLC lets its areas and bosses crop up during your randomised runs of the main campaign.
In an interview with the game's creative director David Adams (also the president of development studio Gunfire Games) Exputer asked whether he'd consider adding a survival mode to the game, a la Call of Duty's Zombies.
