How would my power company know how much power my PC using vs what being pulled out of the wall?  The only thing my power company can measure is the power being pulled from wall.  How could they possible know that my PSU loosing x wattage between going into it and coming out the other end?

Waveform. Actually it's pretty easy just by looking at the harmonics created by your PSU to discriminate your computer wattage, with a reasonable margin. Just by analysing several weeks of your power consumption times this is something doable even if the metering is performed at the counter. Imagine electrical companies, with the 'smart' meter that have been installed in the last 5 years, have access to millions of load profile and can statistically make such claims.

That may be true but that is not something they looking at when they calculating your power bill.  After researching what is meant by Apparent vs real power is that

Real power =  Apparent power - Reactive power

Obviously measuring reactive power that getting return to grid is easy to measure and that is what going on.  PSU efficiency on the other hand is power lost to heat which would still be consider real power from power company and you are being charged for.

Looks like Intels graphics division is having a restructuring too. I wonder if someone is poaching them or if it's just a matter of changing jobs. Still not a good outlook for Radeon/Intel. May their replacements have better luck.

Although perhaps the timing is a bit too convenient and maybe his replacement might be Scott Herkelman lul

Would be funny if they basically swapped positions.

Or even better: Start a new GPU company together.

I think you have a misunderstanding of what PSU power efficiency mean.  If your computer require 500 watts.  Your PSU is 80% efficient at 500 watts then that mean the PSU going to require you to draw 625 watts of power from the wall to provide your computer 500 watts of power.  If it 90% efficient it would only need to draw 555 watts from wall.  Therefore your real power draw from wall would be 70 watts less therefore reducing your power bill slightly.

That's exactly what I meant.

Most people *think* they would incur the cost of that extra wattage, but that's just apparent power, which residences don't pay for in most places.

So unless you're running your PC on the site of some industrial enterprise (which would have to pay for that apparent power), it shouldn't reduce your power bill.

It can get really complicated quickly.

In short, efficiency reigns supreme, wattage of the PSU doesn't influence total power consumption itself.

Different power grids (I.E. The USA's inferior 120v grid vs the rest of the planets 240v, just like the inferior imperial vs metric all over again...) impacts efficiency as well.

So a 600w high-effiency PSU can actually draw *less* power than a 500w cheap-o PSU at the wall.
But a 600w PSU can have higher wattage loads than a 500w PSU.

Quality comes first.

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Cyberpunk 2077's redemption arc leads to the highest Steam player count since its disastrous launch
https://www.pcgamer.com/cyberpunk-2077s-redemption-arc-leads-to-the-highest-steam-player-count-since-its-disastrous-launch/
If at first you don't succeed, patch, patch, and patch again. You might already have noticed, but Cyberpunk 2077 is having a bit of a renaissance this month, on the back of its sweeping 2.0 update and yesterday's release of its (really rather good) Phantom Liberty expansion. In No Man's Sky-like fashion, Cyberpunk seems like it's finally making good three years after its disastrous launch, and hey, it looks like people are taking notice.
According to SteamDB numbers, Cyberpunk hit its second-highest Steam player count ever in the wake of Phantom Liberty's launch, topping out at 246,754 players yesterday afternoon. That's the most people that have played the game simultaneously since the game's launch all the way back in 2020.

I don't know why, but GOG hasn't launched new Deals of the Day. Maybe tomorrow.

Steam has two new deals:

The Humble Store has a new Koei Tecmo Publisher Sale, with up to 70% discounts during 12 days. The keys are all for Steam: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/koei-tecmo-publisher-sale/.

And at Fanatical, while it actually started yesterday, the Star Deal is Far Cry 6 Gold Edition, that will be 79% off during another 24 hours. The key is for UbiConnect, of course: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/far-cry-6-gold-edition.

New Cyberpunk 2077 Mod improves the quality of Path Tracing by increasing the number of rays and ray-bounces
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/new-cyberpunk-2077-mod-improves-the-quality-of-path-tracing-by-increasing-the-number-of-rays-and-ray-bounces/
Schreedr has released a new mod for Cyberpunk 2077 that aims to improve the quality of Path Tracing by increasing the number of rays and ray-bounces.
This mod will make the already GPU-heavy Path Tracing effects of CP2077 even more demanding. Thus, we only suggest using this with really high-end GPUs, like the RTX 4090, at reasonable resolutions.
This mod comes in various forms. The lite version has only one ray and one bounce. As such, this version will allow you to run Path Tracing on weaker GPUs. On the other hand, the most demanding version has 6 rays and 6 bounces. For comparison purposes, by default, Cyberpunk 2077’s Path Tracing uses 2 rays and 2 bounces.
>> Because your GPU wasn't suffering enough. Anyway, there's a roughly 2 minutes video of the mod.

Starfield DLSS3 mod creator threatens Patreon pirates with 'hidden mines' in monologue: 'They will never know if they have found all of them'
https://www.pcgamer.com/starfield-dlss3-mod-creator-threatens-patreon-pirates-with-hidden-mines-in-monologue-they-will-never-know-if-they-have-found-all-of-them/
You might have to worry about DRM in your mods, now. Starfield modder PureDark has been charging $5 (via Patreon) for his DLSS3 Starfield mod, although his DLSS2 mod is available for free on Nexus.
This isn't news in itself, as he's been upscaling mods on Patreon for years. "I've been providing it as a service for more than 10 months, way before Starfield," argues PureDark in an interview with IGN. "I've been making new mods and keeping mods updated for months for my subscribers, is $5 too much for such a service?"
(...)
It might not surprise you to find out that PureDark's paid, modded version was 'cracked' in rather quickly, considering Starfield's popularity. What really has the pirating community polishing their cutlasses, though, is PureDark's plans to add traps for them in the future.
"From now on I will place hidden mines in all my mods to make it harder for these people. They might be able to find and bypass some of them, but they will never know if they have found all of them," PureDark announced, before threatening would-be pirates with mischief. "The cracked mods will sometimes work, sometimes fail … they won't even know if it's a bug or just them using the cracked version, and they will never have the support I've been always providing to my subscribers."
>> Yeah, piss off the pirate community, that has always worked well. In any case, I wonder if this will end like Denuvo, were pirates have a smoother experience than legal users.

Wednesday news, part two:

Kerbal Space Program 2 has been spamming your Windows registry with junk since launch, but a fix is being tested right now
https://www.pcgamer.com/kerbal-space-program-2-has-been-spamming-your-windows-registry-with-junk-since-launch-but-a-fix-is-being-tested-right-now/
Your Windows registry is not the sort of place you want game code to be constantly adding a whole bunch of unnecessary data to, but that's exactly what Kerbal Space Program 2 has been doing. Presumably since it launched into Early Access, too.
KSP2 cannot catch a break. (...)
And now a potentially system-breaking bug has been found, highlighting the fact that the game's accessing the Windows registry regularly throughout the game—when you're moving between loading a new save, or shifting between areas (planets or moons)—and writing new, unnecessary data into it over and over again.

Todd Howard says that Starfield's ship AI sucks on purpose so players can actually hit stuff: 'You have to make the AI really stupid'
https://www.pcgamer.com/todd-howard-says-that-starfields-ship-ai-sucks-on-purpose-so-players-can-actually-hit-stuff-you-have-to-make-the-ai-really-stupid/
Bethesda is known for making big, blockbuster RPGs—but Starfield's space combat was a totally new frontier for the team. I've personally found a decent bit of fun in zipping around and knocking pirates out of the sky, even if it's clearly not the game's main focus. I don't envy the devs saddled with the task of balancing dogfights in space.
(...)
For Bethesda, the snags started happening when it came to designing enemy AI: "It's very easy … to make the enemies really really smart, forever we were just jousting [with them]. It turns out you have to make the AI really stupid. You have to have them fly, then they need to turn, basically like 'hey player, why don't you just shoot me for a while?' … [once we'd] settled on our pace, and how the enemies are gonna move, that's where it came together."
>> It turns out that they also had to nerf, or scale back in this case, the planetary survival systems.

EVE Online director wants players to be able to download its grandest battles as replays and do post-match analysis like football
https://www.pcgamer.com/eve-onlines-director-wants-players-to-be-able-to-download-its-grandest-battles-as-replays-and-do-post-match-analysis-like-football/
At EVE Fanfest last week, I sat down with EVE Online game director Snorri Árnason for a wide-ranging chat about where the one-of-a-kind sandbox space MMO has been in recent years and where it's going. We talked about big things like Dust 514 and EVE Vanguard, with Árnason lamenting that if the former had been on PC "it would literally still be alive", but a smaller comment that also struck me as interesting was one in which Árnason expresses ambition to have football-style analysis of EVE's great battles.

Voice actors vote overwhelmingly to approve a strike: 'It’s time for the videogame companies to stop playing games'
https://www.pcgamer.com/voice-actors-vote-overwhelmingly-to-approve-a-strike-its-time-for-the-videogame-companies-to-stop-playing-games/
SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, broadcast journalists, hosts, voice actors, and other media professionals in the US, has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against videogame companies including Activision, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, and Take-Two Interactive. The vote does not mean that a strike will be called, but the union hopes it will provide "added leverage" in its negotiations for a new Interactive Media Agreement.

Baldur's Gate 3 voice actors playing D&D as their characters is as fun to watch as you'd hope
https://www.pcgamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-voice-actor-dnd-livestream/
The voice actors behind Baldur's Gate 3's origin characters—Astarion, Gale, Karlach, Shadowheart, Wyll, and Lae'zel—gathered for a two-episode D&D game that was livestreamed this past weekend. An hour into the first 160-minute episode, I can confidently recommend it to fans of our favorite new RPG. I don't know if I'll make get to the end of the whole session anytime soon, but it's a charming bit of fan service. Replays are available on YouTube, Twitch, and as podcasts.

Ahead of update, Vampire Survivors creator insists 'graphically ugly third person devoid-of-narrative single player games will continue to be the foundation of our business'

Vampire Survivors is getting a new update soon. It's called the Chilling Update, not because it's scary (though you may think it is) but because it features a new map—called Ultra Whiteout—with lots of snow in it. Not only snow, but also floating skulls and angry-looking, snow-covered yowies.
(...)
Vampire Survivors studio Poncle did an AMA on reddit to complement the announcement. It didn't yield many concrete details on the forthcoming update but it was a fun discussion. Asked if Poncle will ever make a "game / sequel" with Unity, creator Luca Galante (posting as poncle_luca) answered "lol no thank you!".
On the topic of future games, Galante wrote that they'd likely be fairly similar to Vampire Survivors when it comes to scope.

https://www.pcgamer.com/remnant-2-devs-did-no-hit-runs-to-test-their-bosses-if-you-could-beat-it-the-first-time-it-was-too-easy/
Remnant 2 follows in the footsteps of its soulslike inspirations with some truly gnarly—and inventive—bosses. (...)
It turns out that, in order to get the vibe right, Remnant 2's dev team went boots-on-the-ground themselves—as revealed by principal environment artist Shaun Brahmsteadt II in a recent interview with Exputer.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a new Doom easter egg loaded with hints for the game's oldest mystery, like a QR code repaired using real-world maths from 1960

If you drive to the outskirts of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077, you can find an abandoned dusty church wedged between industrial warehouses. It's quiet, save for the whine of drones flying overhead. I'd heard there was a Doom easter egg in here (thanks Kotaku) and sure enough, there is. As a new player, however, I wasn't expecting to fall into one of the game's deepest rabbit holes.

I think I'll sell my PS5 at this point. With the insane amount of games coming out on PC, I simply don't have time to play them all. So I bit the bullet and decided to upgrade my rig one year earlier since we won't have a new node in 2024 anyway. Well, build an entirely new one more like, since I'm swapping just about everything except for the SSD and a few RGB fans.

Everything is bought and on its way except for the GPU and the CPU fan (which I had bought from a third-party marketplace and it's delayed...). Now, fingers crossed I don't miss a discount later this week for the GPU.

Congratulations. I hope everything arrives in time, you get that discount and the build goes smooth.
