Another GeForce RTX 4090 16-pin Adapter Bites The Dust

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/another-geforce-rtx-4090-16-pin-adapter-bites-the-dust

Looks like that's the 4th one... While 4090s have been selling better than expected, I can't imagine there are too many that got sold as of yet so the % of cables that are melting is relatively high. Considering the 30 series FE had an adapter as well as 3090 Tis, there's clearly something wrong. Personally Nvidia should stop selling 4090s at this point so they can get control of the situation. While people are speculating that bending is what's causing this, I really don't think that's the reason cause from the pictures that we have seen, these really aren't aggressive bends. If anything, there's a clamping issue with some of the connector pins that's making them come lose is what my speculation is.

C'mon! You know that Nvidia can't do that. It would be such a disaster on all fronts that it could actually gamage Nvidia more than any hardware AMD or Intel brings to compete with Ada.

4090 Strix review - Beyond Fast with a few big hiccups

With RDNA 3 announcement approaching next week, I may as well get my review out of the way just in case there's a reason for me to return it and boy, idk if I'll ever buy another GPU at launch again after this experience lmao.

*snip*

Conclusion:

One would think that with Nvidia controlling a large part of the PCB, the power adapters the GPUs come with, the VBIOS the GPUs ship with and the driver stack that 4090 would be a flawless launch. Like how can a company goof up a launch where they control so many aspects of it? But apparently, Nvidia can... Newegg does have a 30 day return policy and while I am happy enough with my 4090 after getting its issues sorted, if AMD has something better, I am open to switching considering how many issues this launch has had.

Thanks you for your insight. It will be interesting to hear from TallSilhouette, to see if he has also had the same problems as you have.

The driver part really surprises me as you'd expect Nvidia to nail that for such an important release. For all the (deserved) crap AMD and Intel get thrown, Nvidia chose the worst time possible to launch a faulty driver.

Again, thanks for sharing.

It feels like it's heading towards that disaster if the reports keep piling up anyway. At some point if it does continue to happen, government agencies will get involved and do a mass recall and that would truly be bad for them. If it was just a bad batch that went to a specific brand, than maybe it would make sense. But the cable fires are not only happening to different brands but also to prebuilts. Imo they need to get ahead of it because the damage will only get worse.

And yea, no prob. If there's one thing about GPU launches is that there's always something to make it more interesting for better or for worse lol.

Hope not, lol. Got a few upgrades to do this weekend if I have time. New SSD, PSU, and GPU. Then maybe some RAM on Black Friday or something if I have the moolah. Apparently I should be extra careful installing the gpu power cable.

We're still far, far away from government agencies getting involved and, because user/customer manipulation is intrinsic with this product (even if the customer happens to be a business that sells pre-build systems), it makes it all more complex than, for example, Samsung's exploding phones.

There are still things we don't know that could be the source of the problem, like most adapters coming from the same company and that they're not up to the specs, for example. Who knows.

At best, it's a combination of circumstances and this whole situation will resolve itself and fade away in a few weeks. At worse, I could see Nvidia offering to replace the adapters with "official" ones... something that would benefit their hypothetical plan to slowly get rid of AIBs.

Thursday news, part two:

This site lets you play any Doom WAD file just like that
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-site-lets-you-play-any-doom-wad-file-just-like-that/
One of the classic PC meta-games has always been, "Will it run?" (...)
Which is why I retain a kind of childish amazement at seeing the technical behemoths of yesteryear effortlessly recreated on contemporary tech: a recent favourite was Doom on a fridge. But there's Doom on everything now, heck it's even in your kids' Hallowe'en candy, and so now we're getting meta with a website that has a name straight out of the '90s: WAD Commander.

Hideo Kojima on the age of online conspiracy: 'It’s almost a new kind of sin for mankind'
https://www.pcgamer.com/hideo-kojima-on-the-age-of-online-conspiracy-its-almost-a-new-kind-of-sin-for-mankind/
Hideo Kojima has taken a break from posting snaps of his lunch to do an interview with the Guardian, during which he touched briefly on one of his upcoming game projects, as well as touching on a recent and unfortunate incident. The celebrated designer was earlier this year erroneously linked with the assassination of Shinzo Abe, a malicious fake that began online before spreading into real-world news, and a bitter irony for a creator who predicted the age of junk information.

Overwatch 2 players call new $26 skin bundle 'greedy'
https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-2-players-call-new-dollar26-skin-bundle-greedy/
Overwatch 2's first seasonal event, Halloween Terror, is here. In some ways its formula barely deviates from the original game's shenanigans: it's a small PvE mode with fixed heroes and varying difficulties. Tyler Colp particularly enjoyed this year's offering, Wrath of the Bride. But gone are the days of earning skins in-game through loot boxes and challenges. Nope, this year things are a little different, a little pricier, and fans are not happy.

Rocksteady co-founders are leaving the studio just months ahead of Suicide Squad's release
https://www.pcgamer.com/rocksteady-co-founders-are-leaving-the-studio-just-months-ahead-of-suicide-squads-release/
Rocksteady Studios co-founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker will be leaving the studio at the end of 2022, just months before the expected release of its next game, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The announcement of their departure came from Warner Bros. Interactive president David Haddad, who called them "great leaders of the team."
>> So both founders and heads of the studio leave at the same time and before finishing the game they've been working for years? Am I the only one that thinks this is a sign of problems in the studio?

InXile celebrates 20 years by remembering that time it made a baby game and got swept up in a moral panic
https://www.pcgamer.com/inxile-celebrates-20-years-by-remembering-that-time-it-made-a-baby-game-and-got-swept-up-in-a-moral-panic/
The venerable InXile Entertainment is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and has posted a new studio video with some of its key figures talking about the journey thus far. InXile was founded in 2002 by Interplay co-founder Brian Fargo, and its first game set a high bar: The Bard's Tale, a fourth wall-breaking APRG that managed the rare feat of being a genuinely funny videogame.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is now fully playable from start to finish
https://www.pcgamer.com/dragon-age-dreadwolf-is-now-fully-playable-from-start-to-finish/
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the next game in BioWare's hit RPG series, has completed its alpha milestone, general manager Gary McKay announced today—and what that means in practical terms is that the game is now fully playable from start to finish. For the developers, at least—there's still no word on when any of us will be playing it.

McPixel 3, the game about solving problems in stupid ways, is coming in November
https://www.pcgamer.com/mcpixel-3-the-game-about-solving-problems-in-stupid-ways-is-coming-in-november/
McPixel 3 was the best demo I played in the Steam Next Fest that took place in February (although, full disclosure, I actually played it a bit before the Next Fest began). It's an absolutely bonkers collection of puzzles in which McPixel saves the day in astonishingly bizarre ways, like disarming a cruise missile by peeing on it, saving people from a car bomb by kicking a man in the nuts, or crashing a barbecue and stuffing bratwurst into his paints. If that doesn't sound like it makes sense, well, believe me, it doesn't. If anything, trying to figure out what 'makes sense' in this game is the surest way to go wrong.

Call of Duty's murderous villain is the internet's newest thirst trap
https://www.pcgamer.com/call-of-dutys-murderous-villain-is-the-internets-newest-thirst-trap/
It says a lot that in a Call of Duty campaign that includes the highly anticipated reunion of iconic series regulars like Captain Price, Soap McTavish, Gaz, and Ghost, the Modern Warfare 2 character seeing the most buzz is actually its most murderous villain. Valeria Garza has captured the undivided attention of the CoD community, with some already calling for her to become a playable operator in multiplayer. And, yes, it's because people are thirsting over her.

Callisto Protocol cancelled in Japan after devs refuse to make ratings board changes
https://www.pcgamer.com/callisto-protocol-cancelled-in-japan-after-devs-refuse-to-make-ratings-board-changes/
The Callisto Protocol, the fleshy, goopy space horror game from former Dead Space devs, has been cancelled in Japan following a thumbs-down from the country's Computer Entertainment Rating Organisation (CERO). In a statement posted to Twitter, the game's team says that it's going to cancel the game's Japanese release entirely rather than make the changes necessary to mollify the ratings board.

MultiVersus has delayed Black Adam's release
https://www.pcgamer.com/multiversus-has-delayed-black-adams-release/
Bad news, MultiVersus fans. DC Comics antihero Black Adam has been delayed, with Player First Games saying he's "not quite ready" to join the platform fighter yet.

AIBs Start Offering NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Graphics Cards With Slimmed Down GA102-150 GPU

https://wccftech.com/aib-start-offering-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-ti-graphics-cards-with-slimmed-down-ga102-150-gpu/

Let's see if we can get this NVIDIA 4090 Cable to MELT!

I don't like linking Jayztwocents but no one else has tried to do this yet... Those are very aggressive bends which resulted in no issues.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Yeah, it looks more and more likely that the fault is on the adapters, not the users. It's bad, but it kind of has an eas solution, Nvidia and its partners "only" have to replace all the shipped adapters with new, quality ones.

But I've got to say that it's quite ironic that this seems to be the root of this problem given how Nvidia tested the adapters months ago and warned its partners of using quality ones to avoid problems. Looks like they didn't listen.

AiB's and Nvidia

Nvidia: lets overengineer coolers to meet specifications and max out performance, yeah? You can reuse them later on fully the unlocked AD102 models down the line.

AiB: Okay.

Also, power connectors/adaptors?

Nvidia: Who gives a shit.. throw in any old connector that will work, with their $1600+ GPU's. What could possibly go wrong?
