World of Warcraft ads run the gamut these days - where ‘gamut’ is a wide spectrum of approaches, and not the name of a new orcish raid boss. There’ll always be dwarves gyrating in your sidebar, yes, but now and again we’ll also get expensively produced TV spots from Blizzard’s CG department. That’s what we’ve seen emerge over the weekend; three of ‘em, for the launch of Warlords of Draenor in two weeks’ time.
Your airwaves are about to be invaded by the Iron Horde,” say Blizzard. “Word to the wise: it’s best to try not to make eye contact.”
We’re finally able to put a name to the rolling fog that’s bothered League of Legends’ champion pages for over a week now. The Black Mist seeps into the heads of its victims, dissolving all memory of home or loved ones and pulling them deep into the Shadow Isles, where they take on new 975 RP skins.
On Halloween, we mimic their sacrifice by forgetting our own homes and loved ones to play with twelve champions on Twisted Treeline, LoL’s most close-quartered map.
Our Tim’s letter to Microsoft about Minecraft was a hopeful but insistent plea: please don’t screw it up. Early signs are good: the company’s first act after the purchase of Mojang will be to consult the Minecraft community - and to shoo away any wrongheaded thoughts of a direct sequel.
“I don’t know if Minecraft 2, if that's the thing that makes the most sense," said Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer. “We need to meet the needs and the desires of the community before we get permission to go off and do something else.”
I always had a soft spot for Riccitiello. He greenlit Mirror’s Edge, and had a beaten-down, wearied way about him, which seemed becoming for the accountable man at EA. Yes, he might eventually have split Dead Space into so many horcruxes that it became a ghost of itself - but he at least had the decency to look guilty about it.
Now he’s been plucked from the pool of displaced CEOs, brushed off, and made boss of Unity. That’s concerned some developers dependent on the game engine for their livelihood - but Riccitiello has told them they’re not to worry.
“My philosophy is not to get bigger or more profitable for the sake of these things,” he said.
Firaxis might have gone Beyond Earth, but they’re still in orbit of old-fashioned Civilization. Like Sid Meier's opus, this space-based spin-off offers a series of hard choices - about treaties, base construction, and the nature of first contact.
The devs have decided to make the first decision a little easier, however. You now have the option to download a Steam demo before deciding if the new Civ is for you.
Sledgehammer Games’ Glen Schofield sports wide shoulders, a footballer’s nose, and a voice gruff enough that he could star in his own shooter. He is, on the face of it, every bit as solid as his studio’s namesake. But now fans desperate to know the ins and outs of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare have gone and upset him - spilling some of the game’s multiplayer secrets across Twitch and YouTube.
It’s been almost a year since Telltale announced their foray into the Game of Thrones universe for their next adventure game. They’ve been frustratingly tight-lipped when it comes to details, but that might end today. A tweet from their community and PR specialist, Laura Perusco, has revealed that we can expect to be playing the game by the end of this year.
Ubisoft have released a fancy new TV ad for their upcoming revolution-starter, Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The CGI trailer is a bit special, because it features over 1,400 custom assassins that players made via a special website promoting the game.
If you squint hard enough, maybe you can make out yours too.
A new patch will hit the denizens of World of Warcraft tomorrow (Wednesday for EU), that will bring the game in line with the version of Warlords of Draenor that’s being tested on the beta realms. It’ll also include fixes for issues that cropped up in the initial transition to 6.0, while porting over the remaining assets required for the launch of the new expansion on November 13th.
“Our plan is to not require a launch-day patch, and have a smooth transition to the new expansion.”
Hang onto your chainmail breeches warrior, because Lords of the Fallen is out a couple days early here in Europe. In fact, it’s out in only 18 hours from now according the the Steam store page. Originally due out on October 31st, the EU launch has been brought in-line with the North American release.
Huzzah for launch date equality!
In 1998, LucasArts released updated versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. A year later, they bundled them alongside X-Wing Alliance. Nobody knew it at the time, but it was the last time those games would be widely available, and functional on modern hardware.
Tomorrow, at long last, GOG and LucasArts will rectify that situation. TIE Fighter, X-Wing, and a number of other LucasArts classics are coming out on GOG.com.

Two modders are currently working on a HD Texture Pack project for Resident Evil 4. While an official HD version was released, the textures that Capcom included were a bit underwhelming (to say the least). And – as most would expect – this duo has managed to surpass the development team by creating proper HD textures for this fourth part of the Resident Evil series. Continue reading

Blizzard have just banned “several thousand” bot accounts from Hearthstone that were found to be using “third party software” to play Hearthstone. The bans come as the popularity of bots have been on the rise after Blizzard seemingly did nothing about it. That ends today, after a flurry of bans have occurred in an effort to halt the bots in their place.
The amateur QA team for one of the best PC games of 2013 just got an awful lot bigger. DICE have granted premium Battlefield 4 players from all platforms access to the game’s community test environment - whether or not they own a copy of the game on PC.
Dead Island 2 doesn’t cheat. You can see it in the views: long sweeping eyelines of zombie infested Los Angeles, the seamless strolls from the Hollywood sign in the hills, all the way to Santa Monica beach.
It’s a showstopper.
Horror games have subsisted on the common phobias of humanity since Alone in the Dark, but - unless you count F.E.A.R. - have never before made a thing of the rather rare fear of women. That’s where the indie shooter now soliciting your votes on Steam Greenlight, Gynophobia, takes its name from.
Double Fine fired the Spacebase DF-9 launch trailer across our bow this morning. It’s postively teeming with space bugs, raider attacks, and aliens doing weights in their space gym. Bundled into the trailer torpedo was the announcement that owners of the space station management sim will also get a copy of Hack ’n’ Slash.
It’s not that your Sims shower skit isn’t totally on-the-nose, or that there’s anything wrong with Leisure Suit Larry cosplay in principle. It’s just that you’re going to have to find somewhere else to perform them.
Dress appropriately,” write Twitch in their new guidelines. “Nerds are sexy, and you’re all magnificent, beautiful creatures, but let’s try and keep this about the games, shall we?”
Scream Fortress 6 is coming, and with it the flurry of presents Team Fortress 2 players have come to expect over the last four spooky seasons. But Valve have revised the gift system for this year’s event, in the hope of ending the iffy practices of Halloweens past.
“The Halloween experience for many players now consists of sitting idle in a custom server while a plugin teleports them from gift spawn point to gift spawn point,” write the dev team.
“We feel comfortable characterizing the current system as blatantly and transparently unfair.”
If years of poor port treatment at the hands of Rockstar hadn’t already quelled your indignant rage over the year-long delay of GTA V on PC, a Dodo might do it.
The “classic bird of flight” is just one of a number of measures Rockstar have taken to placate players good enough to have bought the latest Grand Theft Auto for console, and then again for PC.
Democracy 3 is jumping into the near future and turbulent times with the Clones and Drones expansion, which dropped today. Future techs and new social issues rear their heads, adding more to the charts and numbers that spin grim political yarns. At least, the yarns are grim when I’m playing, and ruining the country.
The future doesn’t seem too bright.
When you look up at the clouds, especially if you are a character in some romantic fiction, lying on the bonnet of a car, you might find that they look like celebrities or vegetables or maybe a foot. But have you ever looked up at the sky and thought, “Gosh, those are some fancy clouds”?
Maybe you hate fancy clouds, though. Perhaps you think they are putting on airs. If only there was a way to take them down a peg or two. You might not have such god-like control over the real world, but in Minecraft, you are not so shackled.
Season passes are becoming ubiquitous in AAA games. That’s not in the least bit surprising. Publishers love them. They print money. And gamers, despite every possible reason not to, seem to be lapping them up.
And that’s driving us bananas.
Battlefield Hardline’s launch date was pushed back from October, after a very iffy beta, earlier this year, and today EA has revealed the new date: it’s March 17th, almost half a year after later. Better that than releasing it in the state it was in, of course.
Apparently we can expect some significant changes, including heavy weapons now being secondary objectives, and tying them to car boots instead of player inventories.
It looks like EA’s On the House deals on Origin are here to stay, as yet another game has been reduced to zero pounds, dollars and space bucks. It’s Crusader: No Remorse, and this is excellent news, as Crusader is filled to the brim with ‘90s isometric badassery.
Elite: Dangerous’ beta 3.00 update is a big ‘un, tossing brand new ships, the Imperial Clipper and Federal Dropshop, asteroid mining and philanthropy missions into the already meaty galactic sandbox, while also expanding the galaxy itself. It’s 350 light years long, which is mind bogglingly large.

So what are you guys playing at the moment?
I am mainly playing Beyond Earth, which is Civ V in space but it does play a bit faster. and The Evil Within, which I am still not 100% into yet, it is a bit all over the place and could probably have done with a bit more polish.
Korra was a fun little action game. Again lacking a bit of polish but for the price I can't complain, combat is fun once you get into it.

I haven't played much lately, but I've tried the Beyond Earth demo (although just 1 game) and the difference with Civ V are noticeable, specially with the aliens which are far more agressive. Either that or I had bad luck with my game, something that I'll find out whenever I game a bit more.
Besides that, it's been all Titan Quest, which I'm kind of stuck due to not being strong enough to defeat a boss, but I'm working on it.
Please excuse my bad English.
Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070
Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Well it's not exactly the same of course, there are some tweaks, and new additions to the formula. But it still feels a bit like an old fasioned standalone expansion pack rather than a fully new game in it's own right. Not necesserily a bad thing tho, I actually enjoy playing it more than I did Civ V. That my partly be I just prefer the setting, but I do think that some of the changes to unit upgrades and the tech tree are welcome additions. But it does feel very similar to Civ V. If they flesh it out with a big DLC expansion like Brave New World for Civ V, with a bit more content and veriaty it could be amazing.
As for Titan Quest, have you spent any time with Grim Dawn? It's the new game some of the Titan Quest team are making. It's still in beta at the moment, but it's shaping up quite nicely so far.

@Beyond Earth: As I said, I've only played 1 game in the 100 turns limited demo so my impressions will vary once I spent more time with it and I get used to the new menus and such.
@Grim Dawn: I didn't know about the game! I actually looked for more games from Iron Lore but Titan Quest was their only game . I'll look for more info about the game, thanks!

There’s a reason we refer to the lion as the King of the Jungle, and it’s his gold efficiency when it comes to item purchases.
Lots of jungle players think about the same thing when speccing their League of Legends champions - but others focus simply on the final builds they’re working towards. It’s the latter group Riot are hoping to cater to with a new round of jungle enchantments-in-testing.
Thank goodness for the insatiable inquisitiveness of shareholders. It’s them we have to thank for any news at all on DICE’s reboot of Star Wars Battlefront. EA see the competitive Lucas shooter as their big FPS of next year - but it’s been pushed back from a tentative summer release spot to Christmas 2015.
Nobody disputed the quality of Need for Speed Rivals when it arrived late last year, but there was a sense the series had quietly run out of road. First, Criterion shrunk down to 17 staff to work on a YouTube-inspired extreme sports experiment. And then Ghost Games, the studio most of Criterion had decamped to, was hit by layoffs.
Last we heard, the new Need for Speed was in a state of flux - but EA have just now started talking about it again.
The latest Humble Indie Bundle sees the likes of Twisted Shadow Planet, Risk of Rain, and Tower of Guns making their debut on Linux. This isn’t solely down to the games developers, it’s with the help of Humble’s in-house Linux porter and a couple of contractors that this can happen.
Since Humble started its bid to take over the bundle world they’ve managed to port more than 100 games over to the open source operating system.
CCP have been meaning to shake up the entrenched player territories of nullsec in Eve Online for some time now. The transport changes wrought by next week’s Phoebe expansion might look innocuous enough - but they’ll finally force old alliances to redraw their battlelines.
Dirty Bomb is an objective-based multiplayer shooter from developers Splash Damage, the folks who've been making invariably excellent objective-based multiplayer shooters for the last thousand or so years. It's a team-focused first person shooter in which you work together using guns to achieve things, while another bunch of players works together using their guns to stop you.
The free to play shooter was revealed ages ago before slinking back into an epoch-long closed beta slumber. Now that it's finally re-emerging from its developmental chrysalis, all moist with a nutritious outer sheen and ready to play, I've been allowed to have a go. And it's really quite good.
I know farming isn’t as easy, colourful, or charming as Farming Simulator 15’s trailer makes it out to be but it’s so damn picturesque that I want to get on a bus to the nearest field.
Seriously, you need to see this thing, it might make you reevaluate your current choice of abode.
There’s a proud triumvirate of RPGs that inspired Obsidian and 74 thousand fans to make Pillars of Eternity happen: Baldur’s Gate, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale.
Icewind Dale is the lesser known of the three - but it’s also the only one to benefit from both the concise wit of Chris Avellone, and full use of the refined tactical combat engine BioWare are still now working to better in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Ask a fan what distinguished Icewind Dale from its ‘90s peers, though, and they’ll tell you about the cold. The frost that seemed to bite through CRT monitor glass and bring the danger and adventure of the Sword Coast’s northern wastes rushing in.
Skyshine Games’ just wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign, netting itself $166,540 to develop their roguelike RPG, Bedlam.
Reading through the details on their Kickstarter page, Bedlam sounds a little like the mechanics of Final Fantasy wrapped up in the clothes of Judge Dredd.
It sounds grokking excellent.
Today is the first day of this year’s Electronic Sports World Cup in Paris, with players duking it out in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Shootmania and Trackmania 2, FIFA 15 and Just Dance.
Matches will be taking place all day, from now until Sunday, November 2nd. You can watch the Livestream from the main stage below, which is all about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at the moment.
A couple of weeks ago, Carbine gathered every WildStar player up and plonked them into new megaservers, split into a PvE and PvP server in each of the game’s two regions, Europe and North America.
But rumbles of discontent have been coming out of the PvP servers, with players concerned about how quiet they were. To tackle this, Carbine’s opened the doors to free transfers between PvP and PvE servers within a region.
Elite: Dangerous’ beta 3 update went live last night, cramming in more fixes, tweaks and new features than an impatient person could count.
For those of you yet to launch into space and who haven’t trawled through the cosmically large patch notes, Frontier has put together a trailer with the highlights.
Project CARS developer Slightly Mad Studios are ambitiously working on two car games at the moment, the second one being World of Speed, an MMO racer. And it’s free-to-play.
“We’re doing nice free-to-play instead of evil free to play,” lead producer Pete Morrish promises. “Free-to-play kind of gets a bad rap in the industry and rightly so because a lot of free to play games are nothing more than highly optimised systems that are made to optimise the removal of money from your wallet into the developers’ wallets. It’s quite cynical, nothing more than a slash and burn as far as I’m concerned.”
Now that I’ve had a day with the new TIE Fighter and X-Wing re-releases on GOG, there are a few issues that I’ve encountered and a few things I’ve learned about the editions available on GOG.
Most importantly, I had an odd and frustrating joystick issue that took me a few minutes to solve.
You can usually expect a bit of seasonal silliness when games get Halloween updates: new skins, spooky questlines, a spot of Halloween loot in lieu of sweets. Endless Legend has most of that, but also a bit more. The science fiction-fantasy 4X game has opened the door to modders.
Facebook has over a billion users. Even babies, unable to communicate with the world besides leaking, have Facebook pages. So it’s probably with good reason that Mark Zuckerberg thinks in big numbers, numbers like 50-100 million. That’s the number of Oculus Rift units that will need to be sold for the device to be a "meaningful" platform, which the Facebook head honcho dropped in an earnings call.
Not quite a billion then, but gosh that’s still a very large number.
Have you had your fill of Scream Fortresses past? If you’re not too fat on candy and old game modes, you might want to jump back into Team Fortress 2 now that Scream Fortress 6 is underway.
It’s a carnival of death, dismemberment and silliness, as Merasmus takes over, sowing chaos with spells, curses and bumper cars.
