Warlords of Draenor TV ads are all heavy breathing and hurled fireballs

Comments1

World of Warcraft ads run the gamut these days - where ‘gamut’ is a wide spectrum of approaches, and not the name of a new orcish raid boss. There’ll always be dwarves gyrating in your sidebar, yes, but now and again we’ll also get expensively produced TV spots from Blizzard’s CG department. That’s what we’ve seen emerge over the weekend; three of ‘em, for the launch of Warlords of Draenor in two weeks’ time.

Your airwaves are about to be invaded by the Iron Horde,” say Blizzard. “Word to the wise: it’s best to try not to make eye contact.”

Hexakill comes to Twisted Treeline in League of Legends' Halloween event: The Harrowing

Comment

We’re finally able to put a name to the rolling fog that’s bothered League of Legends’ champion pages for over a week now. The Black Mist seeps into the heads of its victims, dissolving all memory of home or loved ones and pulling them deep into the Shadow Isles, where they take on new 975 RP skins.

On Halloween, we mimic their sacrifice by forgetting our own homes and loved ones to play with twelve champions on Twisted Treeline, LoL’s most close-quartered map.

Minecraft 2 unlikely from Microsoft: "We need to meet the needs of the community"

Comment

Our Tim’s letter to Microsoft about Minecraft was a hopeful but insistent plea: please don’t screw it up. Early signs are good: the company’s first act after the purchase of Mojang will be to consult the Minecraft community - and to shoo away any wrongheaded thoughts of a direct sequel.

“I don’t know if Minecraft 2, if that's the thing that makes the most sense," said Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer. “We need to meet the needs and the desires of the community before we get permission to go off and do something else.”

Unity CEO John Riccitiello insists developers have nothing to fear from him

Comments3

I always had a soft spot for Riccitiello. He greenlit Mirror’s Edge, and had a beaten-down, wearied way about him, which seemed becoming for the accountable man at EA. Yes, he might eventually have split Dead Space into so many horcruxes that it became a ghost of itself - but he at least had the decency to look guilty about it.

Now he’s been plucked from the pool of displaced CEOs, brushed off, and made boss of Unity. That’s concerned some developers dependent on the game engine for their livelihood - but Riccitiello has told them they’re not to worry.

“My philosophy is not to get bigger or more profitable for the sake of these things,” he said.

Go Beyond Earth for 100 turns with the new Civ's Steam demo

Comments2

Firaxis might have gone Beyond Earth, but they’re still in orbit of old-fashioned Civilization. Like Sid Meier's opus, this space-based spin-off offers a series of hard choices - about treaties, base construction, and the nature of first contact.

The devs have decided to make the first decision a little easier, however. You now have the option to download a Steam demo before deciding if the new Civ is for you.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare leak upsets Sledgehammer: "A real bummer"

Comments2

Sledgehammer Games’ Glen Schofield sports wide shoulders, a footballer’s nose, and a voice gruff enough that he could star in his own shooter. He is, on the face of it, every bit as solid as his studio’s namesake. But now fans desperate to know the ins and outs of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare have gone and upset him - spilling some of the game’s multiplayer secrets across Twitch and YouTube.

Comments6

It’s been almost a year since Telltale announced their foray into the Game of Thrones universe for their next adventure game. They’ve been frustratingly tight-lipped when it comes to details, but that might end today. Our moment of triumph? X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and LucasArts catalog on GOG

Comment

In 1998, LucasArts released updated versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. A year later, they bundled them alongside X-Wing Alliance. Nobody knew it at the time, but it was the last time those games would be widely available, and functional on modern hardware.

Tomorrow, at long last, GOG and LucasArts will rectify that situation. TIE Fighter, X-Wing, and a number of other LucasArts classics are coming out on GOG.com.
