Confirmed: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 has 24GB memory, RTX 3080 gets 10GB

https://videocardz.com/newz/confirmed-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3090-has-24gb-memory-rtx-3080-gets-10gb

We have just confirmed the memory specifications for the upcoming Ampere GeForce graphics cards. So far only the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 have been confirmed. The information has been confirmed through our sources at AIBs. It is based on the product codenames that we received.

First of all, there is no RTX 3080 Ti (at least not yet). NVIDIA is really launching the RTX 3090 instead. This graphics card will feature 24GB of GDDR6X memory, the same capacity as current generation TITAN RTX.

The GeForce RTX 3080 has been confirmed with 10GB GDDR6X memory. This is a lot less than RTX 3090, but what this means is that there is room for RTX 3080 SUPER with 16GB in the future. There is no mention of RTX 3080 20GB yet.

We only have the capacities confirmed, but we can assume that RTX 3090 features a 384-bit bus and RTX 3080 gets 320-bit. The memory speeds for both cards are expected to be at least 19 Gbps.

Depends on the card you are getting. Currently with the 5700XT which is the only PCIe 4.0 card on the market, some games do show higher fps even if it is like 5fps going from PCIe 3.0 to PCIe 4.0. But the 2080Ti also shows that there's a massive difference in fps for some games going from PCIe 3.0 16x to 8x which could be the case with 3090 since with PCIe 4.0, 8x will be the speed of PCIe 3.0's 16x.

Personally I'd wait for PCIe scaling benchmarks or wait for Zen 3 entirely as it's coming out soon and could give you the best of both worlds.

If Zen 3 is actually coming out soon everything's fine. But even in that video you can see the differences in 4k are negligible. My next rig will be 4k only. And if I throw RT in the mix there probably won't be any bandwidth bottleneck either. I just don't want to run into CPU bottlenecks ever again.

It's supposed to come out by the end of 2020 which has been confirmed by AMD many times. But it could also be a paper launch.

And yea, 4k is negligible for the 2080 Ti but for the high end 3000 series, could be a different story entirely. If you want no compromises, best to wait a few more months for Zen 3 and then decide. If Zen 3 = i9 10900k performance but you also get the benefit of PCIe 4.0, then you are getting the best of both worlds.

With that being said, if I had to pick one up right now and my power supply was over 1000 watts and going to buy an excellent cooler and I was going for a pure gaming build, I'd pick the i9 10900k.

Oculus AR and VR divisions have been renamed 'Facebook Reality Labs'
https://www.pcgamer.com/oculus-ar-and-vr-divisions-have-been-renamed-facebook-reality-labs/
A week ago, we learned that beginning this October, new Oculus VR headset owners would need a Facebook account if they wanted to use their devices. "Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account," the company said in an August 18 blog post, while existing Oculus headset owners have until 2023 to merge their Oculus accounts with a Facebook account.
The de-Oculus-ing of Oculus continued today with another announcement, in which Facebook introduced Facebook Reality Labs, the new name for the Oculus AR and VR development teams. Facebook Reality Labs was the name given to the Oculus Research division back in 2018, but now it appears the entirety of Oculus is being rebranded with the same name.

Resident Evil 3 Remake now has a Fall Guys mod, naturally
https://www.pcgamer.com/resident-evil-3-remake-now-has-a-fall-guys-mod-naturally/
The Guys Who Fall, aka Fall Guys, are popping up everywhere: they've been spotted in Skyrim, and now they're stalking the zombie-strewn streets of Raccoon City. Well, kinda: the new Jilly Bean mod turns the game's protagonists Jill and Carlos into something more akin to Fall Guys cosplayers. And it makes a grim kind of sense. If you want warmth and protection in a post-pandemic hellscape, while also bringing some cutesy cheer to proceedings, why not wear a Fall Guys outfit?
The mod is the work of Crazy Potato, who has also performed the civic duty of turning Nemesis into a Fall Guy, too. The video above comes via YouTube channel Benjamin York Gaming, and as you'll see, the mod really takes the edge off an otherwise very serious videogame.

There's a unique frustration to encountering a cheater in a game like Fall Guys—where the chaotic randomness introduced both by the environment and your fellow players should, in theory, put everyone on something of a level playing field; or, as the case may be, on the same wildly uneven seesaw.(...)
In the three weeks since the game's release, a number of issues have been identified and patched, with combating cheaters high on the Mediatonic's to-do list. Yesterday it was announced via the official Fall Guys Twitter account that cheaters will soon be seeing more immediate repercussions for their actions.

Activision removes Tiananmen Square video from Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War trailer
https://www.pcgamer.com/activision-removes-tiananmen-square-video-from-call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-trailer/
Last week, Activision confirmed the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War with a video built around a real-world interview with defector Yuri Bezmenov, in which he described a four-stage Soviet strategy dedicated to ending American dominance in the world: Demoralization, destabilization, crisis, and normalization. Clips of real-world historical events—the Vietnam War, riots in the US, that sort of thing—played throughout.
Earlier this week, that video was quietly deleted and replaced with one of roughly half the length. Activision gave no indication as to why the first trailer was removed, or even that it had happened, but according to South China Morning Post, it's because the original video contained a brief clip of footage from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, an event that's heavily censored in China. The video was first replaced with one that had the clip blacked out, but at some point later the whole thing was replaced.

Would be true if you could upgrade the GPU. But if RTX 2060 is the limit for PCIe 3 x8, then a 2080ti is the limit for x16. Ampere will need PCIe 4 to get it's power to the ground, something NVidia has already pointed at.

So if you can't upgrade the GPU to make use of the extra power, then you can just as well settle for a 10600K. Or go AMD to be able to use PCIe 4 and thus full power on the next gen GPUs.

I think the judges aren't in for that yet. The things I've read is that a 2080ti barely uses 8x. I will certainly wait for Ampere benchmarks before I make a decision on that.

Here is a nice test

https://www.igorslab.de/en/pcie-4-0-and-pcie-3-0-different-between-x8-andx16-with-the-fast-fastest-cards-where-the-bottle-neck-begins/

Overall there is no noticeable difference between PCIe 3 x8 and x16 on the highest end GPUs with heavy loads. Also the required bandwidth seems to go down with higher resolution, that's probably because of the lower fps.

If you think the high resolutions are the heavy loads, think again. All it does is bringing you into a more CPU-limiting scenario, hence why the gap drops.

The 720p resolution it thus more representative for what to come, and you can see that it lags by 6.3% in average and 7.4% in minimum FPS already.

But this is not just about FPS: A chip as huge as a 3080, 3090 or Big Navi (with 80 CU) will also make tons of drawcalls, which will increase the overhead a lot. And if you look at the frametimes, you'll see that the x8 will have more and higher spikes than the x16 in the frametimes, resulting in microstutter which the raw FPS numbers won't show. Future games will make better use of more cores, and thus will only accentuate the problem further.
