Happy Birthday Windows 95!

Or the parody for the W95-haters:

I knew the parody, but having not seen the original here in Luxembourg, I didn't know their music choice was deliberate, too.

I can also understand why people hated it's minimum specs. Win 3.x even ran on an 8088 with 8MB of HDD (3.1x needed a 286 and 30MB, plus 512 KB RAM).Compare that to Win95, which needed a 386 DX with 50 MB HDD and 4 MB RAM. In short, it disqualified almost all PCs built before 1993 since it took until then to make the 386DX cheap enough for consumers (in 1993 AMD releases their 486, which dropped the value of their 386DX considerably) and more importantly OEMs to choose it over the cheaper SX variant in their builds. Plus, HDD and RAM came at a premium back then (Our AM486 DX-40 came with just 100MB HDD in 1993, though it did have a whooping 16MB of RAM), so 50MB took up a sizeable amount of the total space back then.

i never heard someone say that they care about consumption

Sigh, This conversation just made me realize a GPU upgrade just got ~$450 more expensive for me.  Ran a CPU and GPU stress test on my computer at same time and currently peaking at 901 watts.  That with a Geforce 1080 so I can see a Geforce 3090 pushing it over 1000.  The good news is I got a 1600 Watt PSU so no problem there.

Bad news is the UPS I use is only rated for 1000 watts.  I could just bypass it and put computer on a regular surge protector but I really prefer the computer to shut down correctly during power outage.  Cheapest decent UPS I could find that provides enough power is Cyber power PR1500LCD which is 1500 watts and going to set me back another $450.

Yikes! That would make me have second (and third!) thoughts about getting the card or not.

Please excuse my bad English.

If any of you with Zen2 processors wants to get an extra performance out of it for free, you'll be able to do so next month:

Free extra AMD Ryzen ZEN2 Performance: ClockTuner for Ryzen (CTR by 1USMUS)

https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/clocktuner-for-ryzen-(ctr-by-1usmus).html

1USMUS, who you know from DRAM Calculator for Ryzen and our articles here on Guru3D, has been working hard on a new and awesome project. CTR is short for ClockTuner for Ryzen, a tool that can increase the performance of ZEN2 processors without increasing power consumption.

First off before you start requesting 'where can I download this' in the forums or through our email, today is the announcement of this utility. It is not yet available, the timeframe for the release to be able to download and test is somewhere in September.

The program will be fully automated and has no restrictions. CTR (ClockTuner for Ryzen) Excessive voltage and PPT, low instability boost have been a concern for 1usmus for a very long time and he decided to help the users, because any Zen 2 processor can achieve even more than you think. ClockTuner for Ryzen software will allow you to increase the energy efficiency of processors based on the Zen2 architecture. The basic idea of this software is an undervolt for each CCX individually. This makes the processor faster and colder. At the same time, all energy-saving technologies remain active. Until CTR came along, this was impossible. Another key feature of this software is smart overclocking.

This is not the automation we are used to seeing when + 50% of TBP give +2% performance. Basic operation principle of this software are to evaluate the quality of each CCX (the core cluster holding four cores each) and to adjust the frequencies individually. Prime95 with a special preset (developed by 1usmus) evaluates the stability of each CCX. A step-by-step algorithm to change the frequency allows for balanced operation for all CCXs without shifting the load on the CPU nodes (modules). As a result, you get an individually customized system that is ready for any test. CTR also contains a plug-in test package Cinebench 20, which allows you to evaluate your tuning results.

Since Nvidia is celebrating their 21 anniversary, DF Retro has a video about The Origins of the 3D Graphics Card. It is sponsored by Nvidia in case you wanted to know.

I loved my Orchid Righteous 3D card (one of the first 3DFx Voodoo 1 models). When it took over the graphic output there was a satisfing "click" from the mechanical relay.

My first GPU was an S3 Virge DX/XG in 1995, before that I was living in a software rendered world.

Eventually in like 1997-ish I found another Virge and took the Ram from that and added it to my own, back then some GPU's would had socketed Ram memory, so going from 4MB to 8MB was a big deal.

Eventually got the Voodoo 2 around 1998 which I still have to this day which I threw in alongside the old Virge... Eventually I would grab a second Voodoo 2 and throw it into SLI.

Had a Matrox Parhelia, PowerVR Kyro, ATI Rage Furry Maxx (ATI's First Dual-GPU single card.), Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo 3, Voodoo 4, Matrox G450, Savage 3D, Geforce 256, TNT2 M64... List goes on, wish I kept more than just the voodoo 2 now.

Do intend to build another retro rig at some point and put the voodoo 2 to work.

My pc is hooked up to a 4k display, but on older games als prime example C&C generals I play on a much smaller resolution, when i tab out ( for discord or w/e ) and tab in i notice troubles with scaling or in bad cases a black screen resulting in having to restart the game.
In games i play in 4k i haven't noticed this.
anyone know if going with a native 4k setting into a lower resolution can be a bottleneck or something?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

With these kinds of things it's better to run the games windowed. Neither Windows nor games like sudden changes in resolution. This has been an issue for decades. It's also the reason why I have a separate PC for everything that's not gaming so that I don't have a need to ever tab out.

Thanks viv! Do you know the cause? Because its not like its very demanding or is that shit intensive for the engine?

It's just a thing that happens. Has nothing to do with being demanding. They just can't deal with resolution changes well. Just think about the amount of things that have to be adjusted. That's especially when you tab out of fullscreen mode which is another huge can of worms.

Here is a good article that explains it.

So in laymans terms : engine/coding troubles indeed
