There we go again... isn't 1080p and 2k basically the same thing? With 1080p being the vertical resolution and 2k being the horizontal one?

1080p is a 2K resolution yes lol, 2K can mean anything from 2048 × 858 to 2560 × 1600.

Given that it's a PC game, I'd guess they could go for 2560x1600, but given that it's cinematics we're talking about, 2048x858 is closer to the 21:9 aspect used in movies... :-/

Bah! I don't care .

More fuel into the fire of Steam's own VR helmet:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=776513

Hi! I’m Feep, and yesterday, I went into Valve’s offices in Seattle because we’re like totally bros now. The primary reason for the visit was to try their fancy VR prototype, which will not be for sale anywhere ever for reasons I can only assume involve them already possessing approximately 3% of the national GDP.

I own an Oculus Rift dev kit, and I also did a writeup awhile back on VRCade, one of the first solutions to have positional tracking. I haven’t tried Crystal Cove or Sony’s solution (dear Sony: invite me to try this at GDC so I can write a hype thread for you too), but I hear Crystal Cove is only *slightly* behind Valve’s solution in terms of fidelity.

Technology

Valve’s solution is lightyears ahead of the original Oculus Dev Kit. Resolution, while not at “retina” level perfection, was no longer really a significant issue. The screen door effect was almost completely negligible, thanks to a shiny 1080p display. (Not actually shiny, shiny like in Firefly.)

Just as fantastic was their low-persistance display tech. The display ran at a blistering 95 Hz, and the pixels only flash for approximately 20% of that 10.52 ms refresh time. You don’t notice any flickering or lack of brightness, and the plus side is that ghosting and smearing were drastically reduced. Not *completely* eliminated, mind you.

Latency? Low. Approximately 25ms. Not noticeable.

Positional tracking is an absolute must for any VR set, as lack of said tracking is the biggest cause of motion sickness, the one thing that could kill VR in its tracks. Valve’s solution was, as expected, extremely accurate. It involved sticking QR Code-like papers on the walls (so anyone visiting your home, without prior knowledge, would instantly assume you were a crazy person) so that a camera mounted on the headset could get an optical read on its own position. There was a downside (literally), though…because there were no QR codes littering the floor, looking straight down caused the system to lose its positional tracking.

There was, unfortunately, still a tether attached to the set. This never seems to be talked about with VR, but still concerns me greatly, especially after messing with VRCade’s wireless backpack system. I didn’t feel as free to roam or jump or twist as I did at VRCade, and presumably the wireless transmission back and forth to a base computer would add at least a few milliseconds of latency, but that’s a trade I would gladly make.

Okay? Cool. Now to the fun part.

Go to Neogaf to see the fun part .

I'll be honest here, all this talk about VR reminds me a bit of the talk about 3D. Everybody is working on it and everybody says it's amazing and the future, but God only knows how it will end. And when.

Please excuse my bad English.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught map pack brings a "reimagined" MW2 Scrapyard to PC

Comment

It’s taken an extraordinarily long time for this, Ghosts’ very first map pack, to come around. T’was not so far Black Ops 2, which set new series records for DLC sales.

But if Infinity Ward have failed to match Treyarch’s speed, they’ve at least matched their capacity for synonyms for the word ‘attack’ - and for developing solid-sounding new multiplayer maps. Onslaught has five, and they’re available to download today.

“Given the game's high quality and beautiful design, compared with free-to-play and time-based pay-to-play games, this business model has the highest chance to appeal to the broadest base of players in China,” said Atlantis Lai.

Ubisoft hits South Park with censorship stick, not PEGI

South Park: The Stick of Truth has been hit by the censorship stick in the UK, Europe, Australia, parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. But according the the European Video Standards body, the folk behind PEGI, this has nothing to do with them.

In the UK, the game in its entirety was deemed acceptable for an 18 rating. But Ubisoft decided to censor their own game, a Video Standards rep informed VG24/7, for marketing reasons.

Remember when we used to be able to give our wallets a rest between massive Steam sales? Yeah, that era is long behind us. Poor, battered wallets. Today, the pillager of our funds is Greenman Gaming, because it’s got a, frankly, absurd 2K deal going on until 16:00 UTC, March 3rd.

You can pick up the 2K Essentials Collection for a discount of over 70 percent, which also gives you 50 percent off other 2K titles and four free games. Lunacy.

State of Decay: Lifeline makes you enlist in the army

Comment

State of Decay, Undead Labs’ zombie survival sim, is getting another slice of DLC in the form of Lifeline. Last time, it was a sandbox mode, but the developer is going back to the slightly more story and character-driven experience from the core game. There's a key difference, though: you’re in the army now.

This key difference informs a lot of things that could make this DLC standout from the original game. Instead of starting with nothing and growing into a burgeoning post-apocalyptic society, Lifeline is about losing everything and learning to improvise to survive.

Disney Infinity, Disney’s attempt to cash in on the Skylanders craze, has just been expanded on PC. Until now, PC users only had access to a free Toy Box mode and it functioned like the iPad app. To use the premium characters and their content, you had to utilise a web code that came with ones purchased for consoles.

Now, the Play Set mode can be accessed, and PC players can purchase and download content previously exclusive to consoles for a fraction of the price. You won’t have the physical toys but all the in-game stuff is available.

Titanfall dev seems confused about whether game has season pass

Comments1

The developers over at Respawn have a tough working day. For hours on end each day they’re listening to the cranking and grinding of mechs being tested in the workshop, there are munitions experiments on the firing range, and, frankly, it’s a loud and confusing place to work. Anybody in similar situation would find forming a coherent thought difficult.

Which could explain the current confusion over whether the game will have a DLC season pass or not.

Planet Express Simulator: Cosmo-Nautica

By Adam Smith on March 1st, 2014 at 9:00 am.

Cosmo-Nautica is Elite by way of The Sims. No, scratch that. Apart from having toilet and food needs, the crew of my vessel have more in common with Redshirt’s sci-fi caricatures than Maxis’ consumer-dolls. I’ve had a brief dabble with an early build of the Stuttgart-built indie game, and it’s exactly what the ‘Elite meets life sim’ beermat description suggests. The player’s ship is a rustbucket the size of a large townhouse and various rooms can be bolted onto its empty compartments. Living quarters, vending machines, cargo bays, weapons, engines…toilets. At present, there’s not much to do beyond trading basic commodities, but ground missions and enhanced combat are due before release. Take a look.

Dungeon of the Endless now with added science

New 3D Realms owner claims that Interceptor had not announced a new Duke Nukem game

Comment

Duke Nukem’s become more synonymous with high profile cock-ups and lawsuits than quality gaming of late. There was the long wait for Duke Nukem Forever, which turned out to be terrible, 3D Realms suing Gearbox over royalties and Gearbox suing 3D Realms and Interceptor for attempting to release a new Duke Nukem game despite not controlling the IP. And now Interceptor, the studio behind the Rise of the Triad remake and the aforementioned Duke Nukem game which is unlikely to see the light of day, has acquired 3D Realms.

But Mike Nielsen, new owner of 3D Realms and part owner of Interceptor, told Eurogamer that Interceptor hadn’t announced a new Duke Nukem game, which makes this Facebook page and website all the more confusing. “We have not officially announced anything, other than we're doing a game,” he said. 3D Realms even admitted wrongdoing, named the game, and apologised. Is your head hurting? Mine is.

Tabletop Simulator looks table-flipping wonderful

The existence of digital tabletop games is one of the best things to come out of this confusing universe. Sometimes I like to think they are just created for me. Most of my local chums don’t care for tabletop gaming at all, even if they care about video games. So it’s rare that I can sit down and play anything, whether it’s chess or Dungeons & Dragons.

Berserk’s Tabletop Simulator's premade games cater to fans of the more traditional tabletop games, like backgammon and checkers, but that’s the only traditional thing about this multiplayer, customisable sandbox. There are no rules. This might seem a bit bonkers when games are all about rules, but Berserk hopes that without restrictions, players will create their own rules and make their own games.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2's director calls reviewer "blind or stupid"

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, the final Castlevania title developed by MercurySteam, was welcomed with mixed critical reception. Revolutionary: Unrest Playable At Rezzed

By Adam Smith on March 3rd, 2014 at 3:00 pm.

We live in topsy-turvy times. In the recent past, it was illegal to call something a ‘game’ unless it included at least one dungeon and seven dragons. Then Skyrim contained infinite dragons and the entire gaming market almost crashed because of reptilian boss creature oversaturation. Thankfully, the industry was saved when audiences realised that they didn’t need dragons in their games and might, in fact, prefer chickens. Let’s face it, you never see a Dixie Dragon or a KFD.

Kickstarter success Unrest does contain Naga, which are a bit like dragons, but it’s also a tale of ordinary people, set in an Indian city undergoing a revolution. It’ll be playable at Rezzed and it sounds fascinating.

Monster Pockets: Toby’s Island

By Adam Smith on March 3rd, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

Toby’s Island is currently seeking $20,000 CAD on Kickstarter and has managed to raise a tenth of that total in a couple of days. It’s easy to see why early pledges have been forthcoming because the pitch suggests that this is a game that includes fishing and farming. Toby is a boy who collects monsters so that those monsters can fight other monsters. That sounds a little bit like a game by Uncle Nintendo. But there’s more. Toby also grows food and assists in the construction and expansion of a small settlement. That sounds like another one of Uncle Nintendo’s favourite riffs those there console series that I incorrectly assumed was Nintendo owned. The two-person development team hope to build on the concepts that have inspired them, with random events, minigames and a ‘multi evolution path’.

Where tropical trees once stood, only stumps remain. Beaches are covered with the corpses of crabs, caves littered with the shattered remnants of boulders. Citybound Aims To Be What We Wanted From SimCity

By Nathan Grayson on March 4th, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Beneath a mess of half-baked systems and massively detrimental online requirements, SimCity actually had some pretty cool ideas. Simulation of individual people and entities? Community options for those who want them? Curved roads? All interesting stuff on paper. Unfortunately, the reality of Maxis’ latest city builder failed (rather miserably) to live up to those promises, and Maxis has been struggling to build something workable from the pieces ever since. Enter Citybound. Its goal? To construct a city sim from the ground-up with a focus on single-player, out-of-the-not-a-box moddability, and simulating a truly sizable geographical region – not an itsy bitsy ant hill town. Also curved roads. Always curved roads.
