Don't buy a Ryzen notebook then... Some OEM's are still only pushing out drivers made 12 months ago and won't support anything newer.
I had to get "creative" and work around that bullshit.

On the Desktop... I feel AMD's drivers are fairly solid... The UI on the other hand is fantastic. - Every-time I hop over to the nVidia rig and open up the drivers I feel like I am stuck in 1995, they are archaic.

RX 470 is $110. - Same GPU, just lower clocks. Nothing overclocking can't fix.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1DW-0003-000D5&Description=RX%20470&cm_re=RX_470-_-1DW-0003-000D5-_-Product

Yeah, I like their drivers and UI too. Specially since they've always mentioned known bugs and other stuff.

$110? Nice. I'm a happier bear now (but still fairly cheapass). That'll do.

True. But unlike Origin with EA, Epic has a lot of money to waste on its store to help it gain traction. Plus the fact that a lot of people already have installed the store because of Fortnite.

Their gonna use that money to moneyhat devs and pubs - not use them on to lower prices lol.

Of course they'll use the money to buy exclusives. And once they've gained a big enough base of users, they'll no longer need to pay for them.

The question here is how much money they're giving to those publishers to make those games exclusive to their platform.

I take it as years not days? Otherwise it would still be in warranty and you could get a new one.

What will you do? Wait or get a new one as soon as possible?

Yeah, four years, I've edited it, sorry. I'll have to get a new one I guess, though nothing exceptional, just a stop-gap solution.

There's some RX 570s for $149 at Newegg, so perhaps that would be a good choice? Since it was a GTX 970 who broke, I'd be OK with a sidestep for $149.

Sorry to hear that. But a 570, or the 470 that Pemalite has found, should be good choice until you wait for a better card to buy.

If Navi is solely GCN based, then it's going to have an uphill battle against Pascal even at 7nm, cheap or not. Odds are good though that Navi will be another step passed Vega's GCN/NCU, which was already a step passed Polaris' GCN. Sales of Ryzen have been strong since launch and much of that is probably being spent on the Radeon division. Ryzen pretty much has everything it needs in place, it just needs those pieces put together over time, with tweaks along the way, so AMD can focus more so on Radeon now. If Vega did suffer because of Navi, then this fits into place nicely.

I don't think Keller had much to do with Radeon, as his job was to produce both an x86 and an ARM CPU. He may have worked with Radeon somewhat if they had planned for GPU to be part of infinity fabric back then, but it seems unlikely at this point since AMD has said they weren't sure if it could be done and that they are looking into it. They could be bluffing though. AMD also picked up a Manager and Engineer with plenty of experience and history with Nvidia and ATI to lead Radeon forward.

AMD is using very smart marketing. Not only are they pushing the 7nm 'benefit', but they apparently are going to align Navi with Ryzen so both will be 3000 series which is a fantastic marketing decision. Whoever decided to change the model numbers to that is brilliant, because it will also give casual consumers the idea that the Radeon series of cards will always be ahead or better than the Nvidia counterparts, since you will have Nvidia RTX 2000 vs Radeon RX 3000. If your buying an AMD 3000 CPU, you might as well buy an AMD 3000 GPU. While Intel's 10nm should be on par if not exceeding 7nm, AMD doesn't have to worry about that for a year or two in the consumer market.

To be frank, AMD's graphics division, ever since the beginning of the decade, reminds me of Ferrari in F1. Both are sort of fast, but simply can't keep up with development. Their newer stuff ends up being misguided sidesteps or downgrades, and then they take the "L" home and are back to zero, rinse and repeat the next year.

What I'm expecting, while sincerely hoping to be wrong, is some 7 nm designs who might sort of match Turing's power consumption and performance, which are solidly beaten in turn by Nvidia's next generation GPUs just a few months later. AMD counters with their rebranded and overclocked, more power hungry chips, AMD fans claim it's a victory since "no casual gamer cares about power consumption anyway" and cue Nvidia walking away with 95% of dGPU marketshare again.

Can't argue too much with that, other than the fact that Ferrari is still a Ferrari. People who own Corvettes, typically don't care they don't have a Ferrari or McLaren, etc, since they could never afford one anyway. A Corvette will do everything and more that the majority would expect it to do, so who really needs anything more, other than the elite minority who can afford to professionally race those cars?

You very well could be right, but I think all of us are wondering if some of that Zen magic will rub off on Navi. With RTX launching fairly recently, I think it would be quite unlikely to see the next gen GPU from Nvidia for another 2-3 years. That doesn't mean they won't just get Pascal or Turing on the 7nm process sometime in 2019, so they can drop the price considerably for the 3000 models if they feel they need to better compete. Like you said, Navi could be in the ballpark for a short duration before Nvidia counters and resets the clock. Is Nvidia that worried though and would they bother re-launching on a new node instead of mostly focusing on the future of GPU design?

Maybe, since current 7 nm is still a low power node, and AMD was unexpectedly sucessful in using a low power node for mid to high range products with Zen and CCX.

That would mean more that Nvidia delayed or messed up its next shrink instead of AMD being particularly great. But the market sort of needs it right now, for competition.

UPDATE: From the looks of it, this is only the dev kit for Conan Exiles. Both Epic and Funcom did not clarify on the store page whether this was only the Unreal Engine 4 dev kit or not (which is a bit misleading if you ask us). After downloading it, we can confirm that it’s only the dev kit.

Turok 2 Ascension mod improves textures, adds double jump, brings more gore/blood and more
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/turok-2-ascension-mod-improves-textures-adds-double-jump-brings-more-gore-blood-and-more/
Modder ‘VGames’ has released a brand new mod for Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. According to its description, Turok 2 Ascension brings crazier weapon abilities, more blood and gore, adds double jump functionalities, improves textures and more.
Going into more details, all monsters now have death skins, one for normal deaths, one for burnt deaths, and one for exploded deaths, and all monsters will create particle and sound effects when hitting objects with their melee attacks. Lighting for every enemy projectile and attack has had their colors corrected and when blown up, monsters have a chance of moving left or right across the screen like in Turok 1. Furthermore, a new gibbing system has been added to Extreme Death animations for all enemies that adds lots of new gibs and gore chunks.
Players can now double jump and can now dash on the ground and in midair with the double tap of any directional button. Players can also do a Ground Pound attack by pressing the crouch button right after a double jump or after jumping from a high platform dealing high explosive damage. Turok will also randomly crack jokes and taunt his enemies as he kills them.

Daisy Ridley modded into Super Smash Bros. is perfect nightmare fuel
https://www.pcgamer.com/daisy-ridley-modded-into-super-smash-bros-is-perfect-nightmare-fuel/
I hear there's a new Super Smash Bros. out for the Nintendo Switch—and not the PC, for some strange reason—but that's not the Smash Bros. I'm talking about today. I'm talking about Smash for the Wii U, which is quite playable on the PC thanks to the Cemu emulator. And if it's playable, that means it's moddable. So why not mod Star Wars star Daisy Ridley into the cast?
No, better idea: turn princess Daisy into Ridley, the space pterodactyl from the Metroid series. That's definitely not a terrifying image that will haunt me on dark, stormy nights for the rest of my days. It gets even weirder if you think about the fact that Daisy in Smash Bros. is actually just a palette swap for Peach, so this is actually Peach-Daisy-Ridley, but let's not go there.
The Daisy-Ridley mod by modder HSFR.X is on GameBanana, which is also home to some incredible and bizarre The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild mods. Daisy-Ridley is a particularly pure form of nightmare fuel, but there are other bizarre and fun reskins.

This modder is recreating the entirety of World of Warcraft in Skyrim
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-modder-is-recreating-the-entirety-of-world-of-warcraft-in-skyrim/
Both Skyrim and World of Warcraft are some of the most beloved RPGs of all time, so it only makes sense that someone would be crazy enough to try and combine them. That's exactly what modder 'Fled1' is doing with "Azeroth in Skyrim - Unofficial Warcraft Expansion," a work-in-progress mod that aims to recreate the entirety of Azeroth inside of Skyrim.
Originally, Azeroth in Skyrim was a mod created back in 2012 by two modders known as Hellscreamy and Celsiuz, but they abandoned the project a few years later. It seemed the dream was dead until yesterday when Fled1 released a new update to the mod that features a ton of improvements, like the addition of Westfall and Scholomance. "I've got to the stage where I feel this is a pretty substantial upgrade on the previous version 0.1 and felt it should probably now be available for you to download and try," Fled1 writes.

"The PC needs a new skateboarding game," Mat wrote last year, and that still rings true. Session, a spiritual successor to Skate, looks promising, but is still a long way off. Could Skater XL, a newly-announced game that will enter Early Access on December 19, be the sim we've been waiting for?

Some Epic Store games are pushing back or scrapping Steam releases
https://www.pcgamer.com/some-epic-store-games-are-pushing-back-or-scrapping-steam-releases/
Satisfactory, one of the upcoming games you'll be able to buy on Epic's new store, will no longer be available on Steam, while two others—Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and Genesis Alpha One—will be timed exclusives for the Epic Store, the developers have announced.

Super Meat Boy Forever release window set, will be Epic Store exclusive for a year
https://www.pcgamer.com/super-meat-boy-forever-release-window-set-will-be-epic-store-exclusive-for-1-year/
Super Meat Boy Forever will be out in April 2019—and it will be an Epic Store exclusive for a year, developer Team Meat has confirmed.
The release window was announced at yesterday's Kinda Funny Games Showcase in a new trailer (above) that shows off some of the levels and bosses you'll face. Remember, unlike the original it's an auto-runner—but as Tyler wrote when he played it, that's not a bad thing.

Surreal indie RPG YIIK is finally out next month
https://www.pcgamer.com/surreal-indie-rpg-yiik-is-finally-out-next-month/
The long-awaited YIIK: A Postmodern RPG (as in Y2K) will be out on Steam next month, developer Ackk Studios has announced.
As you can tell from a new trailer, above, it's going to be utterly bizarre. It's "a Japanese-style RPG developed by Americans", and it's set in a twisted version of Earth in the '90s with "yammering skulls, tortoise samurais and living stop signs".

Valve hides cryptic Portal message inside CS:GO's new battle royale mode
https://www.pcgamer.com/valve-hides-cryptic-portal-message-inside-csgos-new-battle-royale-mode/
Valve has hidden a cryptic Portal message within CS:GO's new battle royale mode, Danger Zone—and some fans believe it may be the start of a new Alternate Reality Game, similar to the one that led to the announcement of Portal 2.
Update: Don't get too excited: Valve says the Easter egg was just "a bit of fun."
>> I was going to warn against Valve's hints after the many Half Life 3 hints we've had over the years, but they have already done it.

The next Warframe is a furious, punchy monk
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-next-warframe-is-a-furious-punchy-monk/
The newest Warframe poised to join the titular game’s roster is Baruuk, shown off recently by Digital Extremes. Baruuk doesn’t really like fighting, but it's a bad idea to piss him off. When he gets pushed too far, he unleashes the power bottled up inside him and, as the devs explain, “kicks ass”. You can see his flashy abilities in the latest developer stream.

You can only preorder Rage 2 for Bethesda's launcher right now, not Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/rage-2-steam/
Following Fallout 76's exclusive launch on Bethesda.net, it's looking like Rage 2 could be the next game to land on the publisher's own platform first. There is no listing for Rage 2 on Steam, and third-party retailers that let you preorder the game like https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/rage-2-pc/">Green Man Gaming and https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/rage-2">Fanatical list the platform as Bethesda. Fanatical even goes out of its way to make sure you know you're not buying a Steam key, with this notice near the top of the page: "Please note that the key provided is a Bethesda.net key and not a Steam Key."

Capcom promises that you'll be able to 'step into the shoes' of Geralt, making the most of his legendary monster hunting skills, and participate in a unique quest line.

Swords are coming to Fortnite
https://www.pcgamer.com/swords-are-coming-to-fortnite/
In case the addition of planes last week didn't provide enough new stuff to occupy your time in Fortnite, today Epic has teased the addition of swords to the game as part of Season 7. As with the turnaround on all things Fortnite, it's likely we'll see swords added to the game in an update coming very soon.
