When was the last time the performance jump was groundbreaking? 15-20% gen to gen seems moderate.

nVidia Maxwell had gains of about 40-55% over Kepler.
https://www.anandtech.com/show/9306/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-review/8

Kepler had gains of 45-75% over Fermi.

So... It happens more often than we think?

I never said anything to the contrary.

You cannot really expect devs to code for hardware that doesn't exist. When has that ever been the case? And yes, for now they are gimmicks, but they're starting a framework. I'd rather devs start to get familiar with it now and learn techniques to make their stuff more efficient than later when they do get the hardware power but put on such inefficient code that it won't matter anyway. We should be embracing both Nvidia and the devs who pioneer so early with technology that will inevitably become the future. We lose a few percent of performance in this and and the next few gens but we'll gain so much more in the long run.

When AMD started to design Terascale... Aka, Very Long Instruction World-5 Way Aka. VLIW5... It was an architecture that was highly optimized for Direct X 9.0 titles... And it actually showed, it gave nVidia a run for it's money.
With the advent of the Radeon 5000 series AMD started to bolt on more advanced features like Tessellation... However, it was starting to become clear that VLIW was not an architecture well suited to the increasing compute demands of the future... So a more balanced approach was born with VLIW4... But that was just a stop-gap solution to get more performance out of a node whilst not blowing out transistor budgets.

Eventually GCN will come along and the rest is history.

The point is... AMD's Terascale was designed for good performance in titles of the day... And features were introduced as they were ratified in Direct X, but weren't done in a comprehensive fashion so as to take away from the chips capabilities elsewhere that games of the era were demanding.

And despite the fact that the Radeon 5000 series had absolutely terrible geometry performance, that part still held up extremely well (More so than nVidia direct counterpart, that's for sure. - Just ask JEMC.) as AMD didn't spend as much transistor space on it's geometry engines as nVidia did with it's Polymorph Engines.

The point I am saying is that, there is certainly better ways than dedicating such a large silicon area for features that doesn't really have much use at the moment.
Ramp it up when the demand arises.

I really hope AMD will not go completely conservative with their next GPU set to compete with Nvidia's flagship and at least take the first steps to integrate the new features.

It's going to be conservative. Navi is just an iterative update to Graphics Core Next that we have been seeing on the market for half a decade or more.

Question: How feasible are large chips? Is there like an upper limit where we reach the ceiling of what's possible with engineering, is it a cost issue? How far are we with stacked chips?

There is most certainly an upper limit.
nVidia just has such large profit margins and prices that it's less of an issue... They can build monolithic chips and die-harvest them to more premium-price points like the 2080Ti and 2080... Eventually when they get enough fully functional chips stockpiled they will sell it as a Titan.

Stacked chips won't be around for a long time yet, cooling tends to be a bit of an issue currently, plus leakage.

Demand won't arise if nobody makes a first step. This is the first step. After this gen people will certainly demand more from the next gen and also more from the games. Nvidia can also not afford to lose the edge in conventional rendering, so they will have a careful eye on that. If it so happens that AMD is marginally beating them, they will certainly overthink their design. I should be thankful for AMD's lack of competition to allow Nvidia this freedom.

Do you expect Navi to beat the 2080 Ti? Because that's why I said the next AMD GPU that tries to compete with Nvidia. Navi doesn't seem to do that.

No one in their right mind should expect that.

Now here's something that, if true, could be... controversial:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 does not have NVLINK
https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2070-does-not-have-nvlink
Who is more likely to buy a secondary graphics card for SLI: a person who can afford two enthusiast-grade models at launch for 800 USD each, or a person who buys secondary mid-range graphics card two years later (to boost the performance of the rig)? Well, it does not matter anymore, because the latter will no longer have this option.

With Pascal, NVIDIA removed the SLI connector from GeForce GTX 1060, which was occupying the most popular segment for graphics card owners. The criticism had no meaning to NVIDIA, it was a business decision to avoid cannibalizing GTX 1080 sales (two 1060 would be faster than 1080).

The story continues. The GeForce RTX 2070 might not even be using TU104 GPU, but a mid-range TU106 instead. The card clearly has a different board and different Device ID. It seems that the whole GPU segmentation has shifted and we are now paying more for the same GPU-classes than before.

I am not saying they shouldn't take the first step.
I am saying they shouldn't devote as many resources as they have to it, it's a gamble on nVidia's behalf... Even Anandtech recognized that as well.

vivster said:

Well. Conventional rendering will be around next gen.
Ray Tracing is not something that is going to happen overnight, heck the 7th gen consoles were leveraging ray tracing to a minor degree, especially in deferred renderers.

vivster said:

Well. It's not a good thing giving nVidia this much freedom, it hasn't done the pockets of consumers any favors.
Not to mention this might be one of the smallest generational GPU performance jumps in recent memory.

vivster said:

Navi will loose.
Navi is derived from the same old Graphics Core Next design which has been on the market since 2012 (6! years ago.)
It's old, inefficient, unbalanced and lacks modern features that nVidia has been flaunting since Maxwell.

AMD's next-gen which comes after Navi though is where all bets are off.

Part of AMD's issue is that GPU's take years to design, so the current products we see were the result of choices made years ago when AMD was at it's worst.
Plus AMD only separated it's graphics division from it's CPU division a year or two ago... And only recently has AMD had any substantial amounts of capital at it's disposal to invest in R&D.

So AMD's Next-Gen design will be where it is at. Navi is just more of the same, an iterative update.

I don't get why they don't just use the PCI-E bus and be done with, AMD's found great success in that approach.

Tuesday of Gamescon, so today there's quite a few news, again.

SALES & "SALES"/DEALS

GOG has two new deals for us:

At Steam, there's the daily and the weeklong deals:

SOFTWARE

Valve's new streaming website, Steam.tv, is officially live now
https://www.pcgamer.com/valves-new-streaming-platform-steamtv-is-officially-live-now/
Late last week, Steam.tv popped into existence and then quickly popped out, but not before the internet noticed that Valve had silently launched a new streaming website—cuing speculation that it plans to take on Twitch. Today, Valve has properly launched Steam.tv.
If you head to Steam.tv now, you'll find a live broadcast of the 2018 Dota 2 International, and some nice, simple features. You can scrub through the stream like you can during YouTube livestreams, and even better, team fights are marked on the timeline so you can jump to the highlights. You can also log in with your Steam account and either join the main chat, or create group chats with folks from your Steam friends list.

MODS/EMULATORS

Updated Skyrim mod Sinister Seven adds unique assassins that hunt you down
https://www.pcgamer.com/updated-skyrim-mod-sinister-seven-adds-unique-assassins-that-hunt-you-down/
Modders have been hard at work updating Skyrim mods to work with its Special Edition re-release, and you will be—or at least should be—delighted to hear that Ravelen's Sinister Seven mod has officially made the jump. Originally released in early 2015, the Sinister Seven adds seven powerful NPC assassins that hunt you down as you level up, injecting a little tension into the main story.
"Each of the seven unique assassins is at least twice the player's level and will track them down across the map," Mnikjom, who helped update the mod for Skyrim Special Edition, writes on Nexus Mods. "They're also imbued with unique abilities outside your normal Skyrim bandit and thus may result in unusual battle tactics to win the fight. Some may be more challenging to particular player archetypes, others less so. They may show up when you're sleeping, when you're exploring a cave, or just on the road. You can try to fight them or run into the wilderness, which should buy you some time, but don't expect them to give up."

Spintires: Mudrunner, the ultra-niche off-road driving sim, is getting a sequel
https://www.pcgamer.com/spintires-mudrunner-the-ultra-niche-off-road-driving-sim-is-getting-a-sequel/
It's been quite a journey for the extraordinarily niche ("so niche it makes Munich Bus Simulator look mainstream") off-road driving simulator Spintires: From surprise success through a beef with the publisher, allegations of sabotage, resumption of development, and ultimately a remastered edition, with updated graphics and new vehicles and maps, that arrived last year. And soon—likely next year—we'll get a full-on sequel.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been delayed into 2019
https://www.pcgamer.com/bloodstained-ritual-of-the-night-has-been-delayed-into-2019/
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night became the richest videogame Kickstarter of all time when it pulled in more than $5.5 million in the summer of 2015. Despite having all that green lying around, actually getting it finished is proving to be a real challenge. It was initially slated to come out in March 2017, but that was eventually pushed to the first half of 2018. And in a Kickstarter update posted today, Iga—that's producer Koji Igarashi—delayed it again.

Cyberpunk 2077 dev has 'just not been ready' to share E3 demo footage publicly
https://www.pcgamer.com/cyberpunk-2077-dev-has-just-not-been-ready-to-share-e3-demo-footage-publicly/
In June, Cyberpunk 2077 topped the PC Gamer Best of E3 2018 awards. Here's everything we know about CD Projekt's next RPG—which includes a link to the leaked audio from its E3 gameplay demo. Footage of that is yet to be released to the public. Speaking to our Samuel at Gamescom, the developer has spoken about why we've been kept in the dark.

Ubisoft is making a new The Settlers game
https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-is-making-a-new-the-settlers-game/
Ubisoft is making a new game in strategy series The Settlers, it has announced.
It's simply called—in line with annoying modern game-naming standards—The Settlers, and it'll be with us in fall/autumn 2019. You can check out the first trailer above, and it certainly looks the part.

Cyberpunk 2077 quests similar to The Witcher 3 'in terms of playtime and complexity'

Speaking to Samuel at Gamescom, quest designer Patrick Mills says logic was crucial while crafting The Witcher 3's DLC quests. He says he and his team would often ask themselves if certain in-game actions made sense—both in relation to quests and the game's overarching plot.

Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord trailer showcases singleplayer campaign
https://www.pcgamer.com/mount-and-blade-2-bannerlord-trailer-showcases-singleplayer-campaign/
We already know a lot about Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord's multiplayer segments—including its five-on-five Captain Mode—but developer TaleWorlds Entertainment hasn't showed off as much of its singleplayer sandbox campaign. That changes at Gamescom this week, starting with a new trailer that shows some of the towns of villages of Calradia, as well as the sprawling campaign map.

Here's 14 minutes of Rage 2 gameplay footage
https://www.pcgamer.com/rage-2-gameplay-footage/
At QuakeCon this month, I got to sit down at a PC and play Rage 2. Much to my disappointment, the demo contained zero driving or open world exploration: the session was constrained to a single mission inside a building that consisted of combat only, and all of it on foot. It's not that combat isn't fun—I enjoyed the demo—it's just that I really wanted to check out the driving. This is id Software, after all, they've got first-person shooting pretty well figured out by now, so most of my curiosity about Rage 2 is about everything else: the post-apocalyptic open world and crazy vehicle stuff from Avalanche Studios, developer of Mad Max.

>>I guess there was some kind of NDA and that's why they're showing it now.

Cyberpunk 2077 drops handful of new screens
https://www.pcgamer.com/cyberpunk-2077-drops-handful-of-new-screenshots/
Today we learned that Cyberpunk 2077's quests are similar to The Witcher 3's "in terms of playtime and complexity". We also learned that developer CD Projekt Red has "just not been ready" to share the FPS/RPG hybrid's E3 demo footage publicly. What it is ready to do, is release a handful of new screens.

PUBG will announce something new tomorrow—it could be a shooting range
https://www.pcgamer.com/pubg-will-announce-something-new-tomorrowit-could-be-a-shooting-range/
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' mobile variation has a shooting range—a feature which PC players have been calling out for for quite some time. Now, it seems us desktoppers might be in luck.
Speaking rather cryptically via Twitter earlier today, Brendan Greene—aka PlayerUnknown himself—said "I couldn’t come to Gamescom and not reveal a little something new! More info tomorrow... ".

BattleTech's first expansion, Flashpoint, coming in November
https://www.pcgamer.com/battletechs-first-expansion-flashpoint-coming-in-november/
Tactical mech game BattleTech is getting its first expansion in November, which will add new branching short stories, three new mechs, and a tropical biome to do battle in.
The expansion is called Flashpoints, which is also the name for the new short stories. They're procedurally-generated missions stitched together with crew conversations, special events, and choices to make. Some Flashpoints will feature “consecutive deployments”, which means players won't be able to repair their mechs between fights. Given how hard the base game is, that sounds brutal.

Desperados 3 has been officially announced, coming to the PC in 2019, first details and screenshots
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/desperados-3-has-been-officially-announced-coming-to-the-pc-in-2019-first-details-and-screenshots/
THQ Nordic has officially announced that Desperados 3 is under development and will be released next year. In order to celebrate this announcement, the publisher revealed the first details and shared the game’s first screenshots (as well as its Gamescom 2018 announcement trailer).

>>It's going to be made by the guys that made Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun.

I guess technically it's Desperados 4, but Helldorado wasn't named Desperados 3, although it continued the story of Cooper's Revenge.
Great to hear about the dev, Shadow Tactics is really good game.

I'm playing it right now and I agree with you, Shadow Tactics is a very good game.

And I hope Desperados 3 manages to bring into the story those of us that didn't play the first games.

Actually interested. But sadly it's a Ubisoft game. :'(
Used to love the franchise back in the 90's.
