Forums - Gaming - Nintendo Explains Why They Are Still In The Hardware Business

Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta has explained exactly why Nintendo is still in the hardware business despite naysayers calls for the company to go third-party. Scibetta says that he believes that Nintendo consoles come to life when the software and the hardware work in harmony together.

“Nintendo systems come to life the best when the hardware and software work in perfect harmony. That’s why we’re still in the hardware business, because we think our hardware is the best way to bring software to life. It’s tuned perfectly for that. When Mario bounces from mushroom to mushroom, it feels so responsive because the software has been tuned especially for that hardware.”

'Video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock-n-roll.'

I think somebody posted this earlier but i would hate it if they went 3rd party. Hopefully I can find a good deal on WiiU on black friday

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Naysayers may say what they want, lol. Nintendo will stay in HW market.

*disclamer* I love me some 3d Mario, Metroid, Zelda, but...

"the software has been tuned especially for that hardware.”

Isn't that what everyone does!?

A better and more honest reason would be that having your own console doesn't devalue your IP's as much.

"lol iunno people keep buying our stuff"

I'd rather play it all on PC personally.

That said, the real reason is the majority of Nintendo's net income comes from publishing fees on 3rd parties rather than their own hardware of software, they just so happen to be in a unique position where their software is also insanely profitable compared to even the vast majority of 3rd parties, and almost exclusively sell hardware at a profit to boot.

I wouldn't want to play Nintendo games anywhere else. Though this isn't the real reason. They just make more money this way.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I remember reading an article a long time ago, when Gamecube was struggling, where Miyamoto said that the day they stop selling hardware, is the day they stop making games.

Back then, Nintendo was in a world of trouble. People mocked the DS, and the Sony PSP marked the first real competition for the Nintendo handhelds. Gamecube was also selling really poorly.

Nintendo will bounce back. The question is, how will they change as a studio? When Gamecube struggled, Nintendo bought Retro Studios. Now that WiiU is struggling, Nintendo is exclusively publishing Platinum Studio games. If they buy them, what cool new games should we expect in the future?
