I've heard this discussion many times and I've actually done a bit of research on it.  From a tech perspective, one of our members here, Zarx, who really knows his sh!t when it comes to things like this, sums it up best in a post from a thread from about a year ago:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4731562

Bottom line:  They're both very evenly matched on a technical level.  Even though the Xbox looks stronger on paper, the Cube was such a well designed console for its time and had very comparable (and in some ways even better) real world performance.

I'll say that personally I think the Cube's best looking games (the Primes, the Rogue Squadrons, RE4) edge out the Xbox's best efforts overall, IMHO.

that post was only really talking about the CPUs and I really don't know that much I am just an ethusiest that reads a lot of nerdy tech stuff related to gaming. There are people on this board that know a lot more than I do. It's not like I am an engineer or a programmer or something like that.

Anyway just came here to post a link to this thread on GAF, it's interesting to see actual direct feed shots of the old games without terrible compression or scaling that was common in screenshots of the day. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=603721

Silent Hill 3, MGS3, FFXII, GT4 and GoW2 shows that PS2 was not too far from GC and Xbox.

Played booth games many times, I consider Silent Hill 3 on PS2 prettier than RE remake on Cube.

There's not a single character model on any PS2 game that comes close to REmake's characters. I consider your eyes faulty.

I hear those models used a lot of polygons.

What "looks better" is subjective; one person might find Xbox's better lighting better looking, another may find Gamecube's high polygons counts and extensive effects better looking.

When people boast about the Rouge Squdron games, they always post pictures of flying scenes.

But when you're walking around and get a closer look at the character models and land. Well... there isn't much to boast about. Suddenly the game looks bland.

Doesn't change the fact that they pushed an insanely high polygon count, at 60fps, while also running lots of bumpmapping, self-shadowing, and in the third game, light scattering as well.

And the game he's boasting about had per-rendered backgrounds.

We just talkin' bout models. Stay on topic, sir.

I understand, but you're still more informed than a lot of us here and I have heard much of what you said in that post (and Viper's post earlier) echoed in multiple things I have read regarding this very subject in the past. My friend, for example, is a programmer and is very tech savvy, and I've spoken to him on this very subject (Xbox vs GC). And I'm much more inclined to listen to people (like Factor 5) who know their stuff rather than passively dismiss them just because it won't benefit my stance, which is absurd.

What you, Viper, my friend, Factor 5, and multiple things I've read all have in common is that you share the opinion that the GC could hold its own against the Xbox, and even has some advantages over it even though the Xbox is, overall, a more raw power machine.

XBox games had an obvious technical lead in some departments like shaders and lighting, but the graphics always seemed very blocky.

Gamecube games had better art, ran more smoothly and seemed to push more polygons.

Lilbroex would've had a field day in this topic.

Except that much of what they've stated pans out with what others have as well - many of which know a lot more about tech than you or I.

I'll form my own conclusions from the people who are in the know rather than those who choose to dismiss them because it doesn't suit their preference.

Xbox is GPU is capable of more polygons and it has more RAM. Just saying and deal with it!

Also, if we could actually find the max poly counts of games that would make this discussion more interesting.

I believe the article you're citing is old. Its only discussing early Gamecube and Xbox games.

Would you mind dealing with my last post?
