Forums - Gaming - What exactly is smartglass?

So I haven't really been keeping up with the whole smart glass thing. Is it just using a separate phone/tablet to control certain things in games? Does using it for stats and stuff count? I looked it up and found xbox smart glass, but whats the diff between using a tablet for certain things on ps4? Is there some special application of smartglass that Microsoft has that Sony doesn't. Is it just any game that using a phone/tablet to control certain aspects? I've been using my phone to control the youtube app on my ps3, is that also smart glass?

It's a waste of time.

buying one will give you an achievement, that's all I know.
But yeah, tablets are going to be on both systems, something to do with rts gaming on the consoles.

something I rarely use...inputting text is the most common use...
think of it like a extended desktop for a pc on media features...plus an extended remote if you don't want to use the standard remote controller

Glass that is smart apparently.

@OT - Tablet integration so there are some uses/unlockables through connectivity between the system and tablets on new types of content/gameplay.

Beat me to it!

OT: Useless. Just a way to get people to use Windows 8 tablets and phones.

Another gimmick imo that isnt necessary/required for gaming.

But think of the infinite possibilities! lol

Commander mode on bf4 looks like a good use of the tablet though.

You don't need Windows 8 tablet/shartphones to use smartglass. It is available on ios and android devices too.

OT: It is an app for portable devices by which you can interact with the game world. For eg. You can check stats, change gun loadouts in shooters, customize cars in racing games all while being away from console. Also there is interactivity with the game such as giving you different perspective of what is happening. Could be cool for RTS elements.

It's an app. They are programming it to work with Windows 8 and Xbox. Sony is making a PlayStation app in contrast, but they also have the Vita on top of that.

I'm not sure what the limitation to these apps are. So far I haven't seen much but secondary screen menus and control inputs from either, but if Gaikai expands it could allow for back catalog gameplay on smartphones and tablets. Not sure what MS is going to do with smartglass though, they haven't really talked much about its future. Not that I've heard.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
