Something I just recently noticed is that Donkey Kong has always released 3-4 years after a console and the install base was already rather large. This is the first time that a Donkey Kong game has come out within a year of launch, it makes me wonder is it a system seller or just a game you buy if you already own the console?

Yes, it has the ability to help sell systems. I always say, no single game can sell enough systems to make a noticeable difference. Once DK comes out, nobody will buy a Wii U just for that game. The system should see a nice boost because the game will be the final push that certain people were waiting for. Some will buy the Wii U for DK, NSMBU, and SM3DW. Others for DK, Wii Party, and Pikmin 3. Some will for the systems potential in the future and DK is enough to tide them over until Bayonetta and Smash Bros. Obviously, games hold different weights but every semi-decent seller is bound to be a "system seller" to somebody. Another example, would be the game Elebits. It is a game that only sold 300K worldwide. If they made a Wii U sequel, it would be more of a "system seller" to me than DK...

Would say its in the tier same as Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing are now.

I'm only quoting you because you were one who mentioned it. I'm not only talking to you, more of a general thing.
Why do some people on this site downplay Animal Crossing as a highly successful Nintendo series? Animal Crossing sells extremely well on Handhelds and pretty good on consoles. Considering the console versions outsell console Pokemon games, and Pokemon has 2 versions of every game, I'd argue that AC has become nearly as big for Nintendo. (Gaming only) I'd seriously put AC in the Top 3 along with Mario, and Pokemon.
The fact that you say it's in the same tier as Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem is pretty laughable considering it likely helped sell more systems in Japan alone than KI or FE did worldwide.
