Forums - Microsoft - The best explanation (so far) of the "cloud" advantage for Xbox One

And developers will bother with this why exactly? Who would put a lot of extra work into a feature that not everyone playing will have, rather than make the best possible core game? The only time they will bother is for games that require a constant internet connection, so all the added time and effort is actually put to good use.

But the AI isn't "running" in the cloud. AI enhancements are being calculated in the cloud with instructions sent to your Xbox One. Everything is still running locally...

MP disconnects due to internet outage and cloud computing aren't the same thing and shouldn't be seen as same.

The way this HAS to run in single player is -  anything cloud based "enhances" the game. Game has to be fully functional in single player without the cloud and enhancements happen when your internet is up and running.

Like Dead Rising 3 may have 5000 zombies on screen at one time. Without cloud computing, there may be 500 different AI patterns that zombies share, however with cloud each zombie can get its own AI pattern and behaviour.

So no gameplay or graphcis change after all... so what the "advantage" of Cloud??? And the dev already said the game gets boring with suck number of zombies on the screen... they downgraded to way less.

Advantage of the cloud is that the PS4 version will run the sucky zombie AI while the Xbox One version will have "enahnced" AI if you're connected to the internet.

Someone above said that "Better with Kinect sensor" sticker will be replaced with "Better with Internet connection" on the Xbox One games.

Another advantage is that devs don't have to worry about the cost of server hosting and can incorporate this in to Xbox One games. Multiplat matchmaking on Xbox One games will be faster with less downtime. What do you think is better 50 EA servers that Fifa 2014 will use for PS4 or 100,000 Microsoft ones? The irony is that the 50 EA servers will most likely run on Microsofts cloud too except EA will have to pay for it.

Finally there may be graphical advantages too and shorter/less loading times as well. But these need to be shown by MS to be considered as credible advantages...

The bolded part seems reads as if my crossplatform multiplayer dream is more out off reach then ever before T_T

What is "The Cloud" suppose to be anyway? Is it just a fancy word for the Internet?

In my book it is everything you outsource from your computer onto another one to via a network (be it computational power or storage/be it internet or intranet)

Why would they bother making this magical "enhanced" AI that only some XB1 users will have some of the time? What is much more realistic is that they will make the best they can for the PS4, take the chunk the XB1 can't run and stick that on the cloud. So then the XB1 users can have PS4 quality AI if they are connected to the cloud. This is they only way they can justify spending time on such a limited feature.

It is a colloquial expression used to describe a pool of servers.

In fact that already exists for years... it is not new but now it is hyped because the expression "on cloud".

The dedicated servers for WarCraft for example are "cloud computing"... the PSN / Live servers are "cloud computing"... the Google servers are "cloud computing".

Exactly... every server pool that we uses since 19xx lol.

no more like server based tech.... the difference between data center (servers) used for storage and platforms like azure is that you can actually use the server to do calculation where old school servers where more or less data farms that answer request for files more than computing anything really....
but the term cloud is pretty much used today for anything happening on a server instead of locally.... I agree it's a beat confusing.... skydrive is a cloud based storage technology.... azure is cloud based computing technology.... both happen in the cloud but server very different purpose....

I agree but the "cloud" is generic and to be fair only used now to make what was already done more "emphasis".

well yes except that before it was more about dedicated servers now it's more about clusters of servers working together.... I mean of course a lot of it is pure marketing jumbowombo.... but things have evolved since the 80s 90s :D
