Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo won't drop the price of Wii U this year

I think the actual reason is because they already did it with the 3DS, and the resultz were not that great. Short term results.

Actually, you could argue that it did work for 3DS as it helped to kill Vita momentum, but the handheld and console markets are very different.

No offense, but I hate when people say this.  It ignores the fact that they are also very similar as well.  Many of the basics remain the same between the markets, and that is exactly what a price cut targets.

I would also say that the Wii U isn't priced nearly as high as the 3DS was when launched.  The Wii U, for what you're getting (hardware wise), is not that expensive like the 3DS.  Wii U was priced with the 3DS in mind.

Anyway, here's my prediction: we'll see alternate bundles showing up for Christmas. Here are the ones I'd expect to see (Premium with... means instead of Nintendo Land, at US$350):

Premium with CoD: Ghosts (wouldn't be surprised if this was part of why the Wii U version is rumoured to be set for launch alongside the other next-gen versions, so that they can launch the bundle just as the PS4/XBO launch).

Premium with Rayman Legends

Premium with Super Mario 3D World

Premium with Batman: Arkham Origins

Basic + Wii Fit U for US$325

The idea being that three of those games really sell the gamepad functionality to one degree or another (I expect CoD: Ghosts to have some uses for it), Wii Fit U (no Balance Board included) would be a quick pickup for those who had the original, and Super Mario 3D World is THE title for Nintendo fans.

Yes, I remember. Good games and a good price point. What makes you think that the Wii U doesn't need both of those things?

What makes you think that $50 more than the Wii is so much that it takes the system from "enough to create a phenomenon" to "not going to sell well, even with great games"? It's not like we're talking PS3-launch level prices.

It's a $100 difference between the Wii and Wii U. And the answer is the Gamepad.

Wii U Basic is $300. Wii was $250. That's a $50 difference.

Indeed, in Australia, the Wii was $400, the Wii U Basic is $350. And the Wii was selling far better. Games decide sales, not price. If the games are high enough quality, people will pay the price.

But who cares about the Basic? It should be phased out asap.

Personally, I'm only going to buy a Wii U once they cut the price to 250 Euro. I don't want more value, I want to pay less.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

I disagree. The reason the Basic hasn't been selling is that there hasn't been any title truly suited to the mainstream public. People who have been buying the Wii U so far have been gamers, and mostly Nintendo fans to boot (plus some technophiles) - of course THEY would be buying the Premium.

That's why I suggested the Basic with Wii Fit U for US$325. The people who would be buying the game wouldn't care about Nintendo Land, a bigger internal flash drive, or stands, and most would have already owned the original Wii Fit, so they'd already have a Balance Board.

Just Iimagine if none of the games got delayed/cancelled. Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U, Game & Wario, Rayman Legends and a couple 3rd party multiplats were all supposed to be out by now. That would have given Wii U a quality exclusive every month in Q1-Q2. None of those games are huge but it would def have helped Wii U sell better and we probably wouldnt be in this situation where people are clamoring for a price drop.

Not getting one till holiday 2014 anyway! It's bound to have one by then.

$100 cut in April to coincide with Mario Kart 8 would be pretty huge and a good way to start off the fiscal year.

Not wrong! If it gets a big cut like that I might not even bother to wait!

They should be able to do a big cut by then, it will be 1 1/2 years after launch, alot of quality exclusives coming the end of this year/early next year will surely cause software sales to spike pretty big so even if its taking a loss with a $100 cut, the software should offset it.
