Forums - Nintendo - Q & A with Iwata at the Analyst's Briefing

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/130612qa/index.html

Some highlights:

"If software developers decide not to support a platform when, in fact, it has momentum and other software developers have experienced good results, people will definitely question their decision."

"We have received a lot of comments from consumers that the gameplay in “Nintendo Land” is interesting. However, we presume that they have not yet come up with the best words to easily explain how interesting it is to other people."

"In addition, we have also learned that the name “asymmetric gameplay” does not fully explain the GamePad’s value to consumers. As for the software going to be released from now on, we would like to describe the experience that the GamePad provides with a different expression in order to adequately convey its necessity to consumers and increase the number of consumers that think, “Indeed it is good to have a GamePad.” In this sense, starting with “Pikmin 3,” we aim to include functions that make good use of the GamePad that consumers can appreciate."

"However, we are not planning to offer, for example, Mario or Pokémon games in a free-to-play format."

"We had to push back the releases of some games because it has become more difficult to satisfy the quality standards that we feel are necessary for games to satisfy before they are released. It was not because it took us more time to take advantage of what is unique about the hardware. On the other hand, we have become more experienced as we continue to develop software on our platforms, and we have gradually been able to predict more accurately how long it will take a particular game to meet our quality standards. There has been a software shortage in the past two years (for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U) in the early stages of their product lifecycles because it took us time to meet our quality standards."

It's interesting that they are considering F2P, even if not for their big hitters.

The first free 2 play game is  STEEL DIVER  so  not really new IP.

The existence of Steel Diver doesn't negate the possibility of completely new games with F2P.

Maybe its not that the masses 'don't get the Wii U with its Assymetric crap'. Maybe the masses just don't like the idea, and don't want it pushed as the sole reason to own a Wii U.

If I don't like the gamepad, does the Wii U end up being useless? Do I NEED the gamepad in order to enjoy the system?

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Some of these quotes are comedy gold.

Are Nintendo seriously living in a world where the Wii U isn't doing bad, and people want it but they just don't know it yet? Please Iwata, acknowledge you made a mistake with the launch price and with the console's concept.

It's almost as though he's trying to inspire confidence in people.

Crazy, I know.

The current direction will not improve sales. Defending it doesn't help.
