Straight up question here, originally after the Microsoft reveal a few weeks ago it appeared that the Xbox One has some extra satellite tuning hardware that the PS4 didn't have. A decent dual tuner for a PC costs about £80/$100 so fair enough. However it now transpires (should have seen it coming really) that the Xbox One doesn't have any tuning hardware at all and relies purely on a HDMI in for it's TV/external source feed meaning that as far as I can see there's nothing of note in the Xbox One that isn't in the PS4.
When you consider the PS4 is using expensive GDDR5 for RAM and not DDR3 also. A quick look around shows the PS4 is available for pre-order in the UK for about £310-£320 if you dig around, we're likely looking at £399 for the Xbox One, haven't really checked.
That kind of extra hardware doesn't cost more than a few dollars if done through an overlay and not some kind of real-time encoding. Even if real time encoding was used to render the image as part of the main output, that would likely be done by hardware already present.
Was curious if I've missed something here? Thoughts of others etc, please keep the word "DRM" out of this thread though.
I'm undecided on the Xbox One currently, don't think there's enough hard information out there to make a buying decision right now but the suggested price has certainly got me asking questions on what exactly we're paying for.
Cheers.
