They are both in the same ballpark, in my humble opinion. The PS3 hate was enormous when I started college. I have a lot of respect for Ken Kutaragi since his involvement in Playstation is HUGE, but he was VERY arrogant and general comments from other Sony execs didn't help either. I remember him calling the 360 the Xbox 1.5 and he kept touting the power of the PS3, and things got worse when the games didn't seem superior (initially). Kaiz was probably one of the few execs I didn't find out of touch or too forceful.

Nintendo appeared as the white knight, much like Sony now, and that made the PS3 look less attractive. Back then people were showing their interest in the Wii60 combo, not unlike the PSU talk I've been hearing recently.

For me personally it wasn't even hate for the initial ps3, it was indifference which is prob worse. I didn't keep up with all the pr and stuff back then. I was content with my xbox 360 since it was alot cheaper then the ps3. I didn't even care much about the ps3 back then. They essentially both played the same games anyway, but one was an absurd price of $599 US dollars.

Wow no wonder I never saw the $500 model then. What a huge diff in the sony of 2006 vs 2013.

My problem was the quality of the software. PS3 games were horrible relative to the 360 version. Ridge Racer on PS3 was missing a ton of assets compared to the 360 version that launched a year earlier, and it was graphically less intensive. Added to that, Microsoft seemed to have a clear vision of where they wanted to go. I didn't get that sense from Sony. It's almost as if they switched roles. As for the price, I did not mind the price, per se, since it was supposed to be cutting edge and I was more than pleased with the PS2. I eventually got both and I enjoy them both. The stripped down model 20GB model didn't appeal to me so I went for the 60. Best PS3 to date. As for the XB1 ... I take issue with a number of things. The fact that the games are being licensed to me instead of true ownership is a problem, but I won't get into the XB1 issues.

Microsoft will have to come strong this round since the PS4 is more powerful, cheaper and gives you ownership of your games - among other benefits. But their PR is not helping, and will likely generate more problems than solutions.

You could say it's equally bad in terms of PR approach.

On other places, well... I'd say xbox one is worse.

I think they were about the same, but unlike Xbox right now, the Playstation brand was huge in 2006 and popular in every market plus Sony has always had the advantage of Japan. The Xbox brand is mainly strong in the United States and UK and those are not loyal markets.

At least Sony was still giving consumers tremendous value. I mean the price was ridiculous but they were packing some serious tech for 2006 and losing money on every one sold. They also were building some awesome software and giving away free online so it ended up costing less. They made some arrogant statements but the consumer never was screwed over.

No Microsoft is in a way worse PR disaster. Sony had a price problem with PS3, the Xbox IS the problem with its policies.

I worked at GameStop back when the PS3 came out and we never even received the 500 dollar version.
