E3 2013: PS4 Outpacing Xbox One Pre-Orders

Early data suggests Sony’s E3 conference made a stronger impact on consumers than Microsoft.

Early data for console pre-orders from major online retailers in the United States show consumers pre-ordered approximately three PS4 units for every two Xbox One consoles during the period between Monday June 10 to Wednesday June 12. While this is not an indication of future purchase intent, it does seem to suggest that Sony resonated louder with consumers during E3 2013 than Microsoft.

IGN users were unquestionably swayed by Sony’s messaging during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. We asked our readers who they thought was “winning E3” during the show. Over 280,000 of you responded, and Sony took the top spot with 81% of the votes. Microsoft garnered 12% and Nintendo grabbed the remaining 7%.

While Sony seems to have the advantage in the pre-order race at this point, Microsoft Games Studio VP Phil Spencer did respond to the recent consumer concerns over mandatory connectivity checks and the seemingly unfriendly approach towards used games and lending by saying, “this isn't a sprint. The platform launches this November; we've got more content to share."

Pre-orders for both consoles are available now at a number of retailers:

PlayStation 4
Amazon - $399
Walmart.com - $399
Best Buy - $399

Xbox One
Amazon - $499.99
Walmart.com - $499.99
Best Buy - $499.99

So this is interesting, it's not just amazon but other online retailers have PS4-Xone radio at 3-2 in the US thus far.

Around the Network

Balls. I didn't preorder yet, I never usually do but the hype is getting to me.

Anyone familiar with amazon: will more ps4s be available for preorder in the future or are they all gone until launch?  (In talking about the launch edition)

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

well, i never expected something else for ps4 and xbox. i think sony has many more "loyal" fans (i mean those people who preorder consoles or buy them day or week one). that was the case even before all the drm used games stuff.

i believe the ps3 sales were also much better the first weeks as the 360 sales.

the question is how it will look after an year or so when many of the people who buy such a console are the "normal" customers who aren't loyal and who buy because they like the advertisement or stuff like that.

PS4 arrives around my birthday. convinced my wife to get one for me. Now I need to convince her to wait in line.

I think the people that pre-ordered the standard edition will get theirs at launch on a first come first served basis if Amazon gets more in stock. At this point, I doubt Amazon will get many more, since demand has been higher than expected for PS4s.
