Forums - Gaming - Nintendo at Best Buy demo impressions/experience/advice for Saturday.

Tagged games:

I went to the Best Buy that had the show case after work today and my experience was a little different.

Mario Kart 8 looks awesome to me, and I can't wait to get my hands on the real thing, Rol is going to have a field day with that one.

I was not optimistic about the new Mario game or Donkey Kong before heading in because I was disappointed with no Galaxy type Mario and that Retro is working on yet another DK and no new awesome IP, but after I left Best Buy, I was like "holy shit I need those games for the multiplayer!" Guys, those 2 games are fucking awesome in every right, SP or MP.

I was most unimpressed about Wind Waker HD because I usually only beat a Zelda game once and I already beat it on my Wii once and you guys already know I'm not much a graphics whore when it comes to consoles so I was like meh.

DK and Mario games first day for sure, they were much better than I had expected after watching the stuff online and felt disappointed. BUY THEM!

Mario Kart 8

Impressed but not that impressed. The gravity and other stuff still looks amazing and all sure, but in their effort to hit 1080p and 60fps, I feel they cut out too many effects. I was expecting more particles and water effects. I realize they still have about a year to fine tune, confident it'll be stunning by then, but for now? Decent visually. Gameplay is very solid, not many new elements introduced, but I feel that the turns have somehow improved.

3D World

Still though, it felt like playing the NSMB series of 3D Marios. Not a bad direction to go with if they want sales but still wish they'd have gone for innovation instead of trying to polish the existing to it's maximum limits. They hit the diminishing returns wall with the gameplay focus and I really felt it as I was watching people run through the levels.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.

Well it's not Metroid, but Donkey Kong sure can crawl. Honestly, this demo was the biggest bummer of the 4. The demo was Wiimote+Nunchuk compatible only, and waggle was back. In terms of level design, it really goes back to Donkey Kong country returns but with a lot of new and unique ideas. Think of this as the Galaxy 2 of the Donkey Kong series, more polish and better music. (You can hear David Wise).

It's funny because this is exactly what I wanted. Mario Kart recently has become too chaotic, too random, I liked the series so much better when it was just Super Mario Kart, MK64, and DS.

3D World, I feel this is what the game needs. When I saw demo's of SM3D World, I was just surprised at how polished and smooth the game was running. 60FPS and 1080p really make the game beautiful and stand out from current gen games.

Donkey Kong, wow, how is this a bad thing?

Everything you've said sounds AWESOME! I'm really looking forward to owning a Wii U.

To an uninformed person all this screams rehash (except for MK.)

Nintendo isn't doing a good enough job promoting some of their "hardcore games". I mean after the direct, I showed a couple of my friends the X trailer and were really confused because they thought it was FFXV. "Dude this new Final Fantasy looks so good I'm totally getting a PS4"....

But yes, 3D World is designed brilliantly. It's almost perfect in terms of gameplay. It was really fun watching it all.

Donkey Kong is really uninspired though. It feels like the Prime 2 of the series. Harder, more concepts thrown in but not put to as good of a use at it can be.

Nintendo doesn't sell to the "hardcore" gamers. One in 3 N64, GCN, and Wii owners own a copy of Mario Kart. If there was some core market for this game, wouldn't the attach ratio vary a bit?

I think to attract this audience they need to make a simpler Mario Kart and Super Mario, but polish it so it really stands out. Polish is key, but I wouldn't complain about a bit of Galaxy's innovation in SM3D Land. However I have a feeling SM3D Land lacks unique level designs, where Mario Kart 8 is fully of them because Nintendo is rushing to get this game out for this holiday season.

Nintendo needs games to sell the system, and they can't afford to give all their games, all the time in the world to make them unique and ideal. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros release in 2014, so that's why I think they look a lot more original then SM3D World and Donkey Kong. Plus, like I said before, since Nintendo is focusing on Polish, SM3D World and Donkey Kong (maybe?) looks really really clean, and good.

----

I think Wii fans, or Nintendo fans in general who like Mario and Donkey Kong will buy a Wii U for those games, that's why Nintendo is rushing them. However Nintendo only makes 1 Smash Bros and 1 Mario Kart per console, so they want to take their time.

That's my 2 cents. As for Pikmin, and others, they delayed them because they will be the "first wave" of quality Wii U games, and Nintendo wants them to be good so it boosts the Wii U's image.

I went to the one in Greenfield, WI and the line was too long. I watched other people play but was too impatient to wait. People were dressed in Mario and Link outfits and everyone had their 3DS (I forgot mine). Great place to meet via street pass.

I will try to get there earlier on sat with 3DS in hand, hoping the line isn't crazy long.
