I play on my WiiU with a mono set all the time and make calls that way on phone. Seems perfect for its purpose to me.

The full sound still comes from TV/Stereo, so this is perfect for just chat. Plus, its like $10 for a stereo corded headset if you really want or you can go all out on some expensive gamer set.

Its not like that is the only one you can use and its a far better decision that going the bluetooth only route again.

There still isn't a mic in the controller, so it can't be used as a headset. I think the speaker will be used for game sounds.

iPhones come with a similar mic/headset though, maybe Sony is banking on people being used to that. It does look more modern than an over the head model.
