Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft responds to Xbox One backlash - "This isn't a sprint"

@MonstaMack: "Well he has a point.

If people buy the console a lot in the long run, the anti-used and Kinect built in focus might look bad to alot of the hardcore customers. However, if somehow the XBox One ends up being the best selling system (or close to it) Microsoft will be celebrating in their pool filled with money.

The "internet" wasn't exactly happy with the original Wii release, and the "internet" praised the Vita graphics and play ability, and we both know how those both ended up doing."
-------------------
I think you bring up some good points, but you didn't mention the key factors of those points. IE: the Wii sold well because it was something new and appealed to the casual gaming audience and had a great price point to match. The Vita had a lot more competition in forms of smart phones and tablets rather than just gaming devices.

So for the backlash, bad internet rep of the X1 to be overcome they would really need to be offering something that had a mass appeal, and they don't currently have that. The broad appeal features can be matched or surpassed (mostly individually) by other cheaper devices. IE: A gaming console is only going to sell to those interested in gaming, so neat social or multimedia features aren't going to appeal to the masses when they can more readily do that with a smart device that they already have. Kinect 2 will have a similar appeal as the Wii U, sure its better than the last version, but the last version still works just fine for the casual audience that enjoyed it so why switch at such a price point and a long list of limitations?

However, I do think the X1 will still do fairly well in primary markets, but over time that will most likely decline as users realize they were duped. I say that last part because MS will definitely use their advertising dollars to entice potential customers with brand confusion and misinformation to make it seem like the pro's out weight the cons, or the cons aren't cons at all. Core gamers will still benefit and enjoy the device and perhaps grant a small boost via word of mouth if something truly exceptional comes out for it beyond a few exclusives (or extraordinary exclusives).

Oh dear god they're quoting Sony's PR playbook from early 7th gen.

Funny, that's what crossed my mind. The "it isn't a sprint" quote tends to get used by whoever is getting their butt kicked at the time.

I think Microsoft may actually believe that people will just "get over it" or "deal with it" and still buy their console. And if enough people do so to make the Xbox One a success, then the gaming crowd (or home entertainment crowd if you prefer) deserves whatever treatment it gets going forward :P

I also should have said I do predict a significant rise in Vita sales in the next 2-3 years.

He's right. They have time to demonstrate more value proposition in these policies (especially if game prices end up being noticeably lower), so we'll see.

What is funny to me is how ALL of the publishers are all like "I ain't touchin' that" when it comes to how they'll handle used games. PR nightmare's tend to do that.

Last gen MS started a trend of charging for Multi player.
This gen Sony is copying them and lets not forget used game prices are up to 3rd parties on PS4 as well.
I also remember Sony saying this and many a fan spent years repeating it but its suddenly BS because MS said it.
From the initial X2 reveal to now, Sony fans have been doing 180s with their opinion. They hate it til its on PS4 and its seen as a good thing. Such as paying for MP portions of games. MS does it, its bad for gamers. Sony does it and its the greatest thing for gamers ever.

I decided before the first xbox to never buy a MS console and I never will. But I also don't go around being two faced about my opinion on them. If I dislike 1 company for doing it, I will also dislike any other company that follows them.

What I have learned most this week is that Sony fans are desperate to attack MS and Nintendo in any way they can because they don't really have that much to brag about on PS4 because they just spent the last 6 months trashing Wii U for a touchscreen that PS4 has also, 6 month old ports while PS4 gets 1-2 year old ports, MS used game policy that Sony shares. NO backlash to being charged to play your games online.
You know it just hit me. if I took the 399.99 price of PS4 and then added in 6 years of PS+ the console becomes very expensive. I can build a better PC with that cash and not have limited hardware that is trying to copy what I already have in my home. I don't need a PC and a wannabe PC. I'll just use the 1k I woulda wasted on POS4 and just upgrade me PC. Granted with 16gb of RAM my current PC already blows it away.

I really think this will be Sony's last gen as a console maker. Their first two wins were flukes.

Oh and if the kid who PM sees this. I wasn't wrong on the price of the PS4. Add in PS+ which you need to online multiplayer and after a few years you will have paid upward of 1k for what amounts to a limited PC

Of course it's not a sprint, it's a marathon. But, Sony decided to run on a nice clean and new pavement, while Microsoft decided to run in a minefield.

This isn't a sprint yes but this isn't the Paraplegic Olympics either.

Oh well... PS3 and 360 are serving me well for now. All I need to do to buy a PS4 is to know when ND's project is gonna be out.

it might not be a sprint, but still even in the long run...

say you buy 5 games that have a strict no-resale policy. that is 300 dollars (+ tax) you can never get back.

i find that insane

Assuming you don't sell those games back to a retailer?

I feel like so many people keep generalizing the Xbox One to not support used games at all... you can still sell your games back to retailers like GameStop at the very least. If you have no such retailers near you, then you would be out $300 as you put it.

Well, hopefully this means they will pull a PS3 and spend the next few years working twice as hard as the competition to earn back trust.

Price cuts. There are few games I'd spend $60, and even fewer if there's no option to resell or return to the retailer.
