Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo hardly showed anything new AT ALL; have they run out of ideas? (Rant)

I'm laughing at the idea that a new IP automatically equals a new idea. A new zombie idea... Ha.

That's not the argument. Mario Galaxy was a new idea, but still the same IP. And I didn't see THAT from Nintendo.

Didn't they show gameplay for Bayonetta 2 at Nintendo's E3 today? I thought they did...

Dunno... Maybe I missed it due to the lag :P

This line of criticism can be directed at just about every company. Why single out Nintendo?

I can't believe people are actually using this as a excuse.

For years, Nintendo has long been touting how they're supposed to be different from the other two. That instead of glossing up the same old experiences, they focus on bringing unique, fresh ideas to market instead. I didn't see anything near that level of innovating or risk-taking here.

In fact, one of the key highlights for me was how "specs don't matter on the Wii" Iwata was pushing Wind Waker HD's 1080p resolution and use of shaders to enhance the visuals. The same kind of talk Nintendo mocked the other two companies for using back when the Wii was whipping their asses.

I have to agree with this I cringed when Iwata mentioned DK fur.

This! You're totally getting where I'm coming from!

Let me ask you something. Does 2 games really make you hate Nintendo all of a sudden? With 1 disappointment comes an amazing game (3D Mario and X). One of this "disappointments" looks amazing (I'm talking about DKC Freeze here), yep Retro could have made something else, but does that make DKC a bad game? A game you aren't going to enjoy?

No "megatons" were shown, but as a Nintendo fan you should already know that Nintendo NEVER comes out with "megatons" (Bayonetta 2 being the only exception in recent memory).

No new IPs were shown, did you really expect a new one coming from Nintendo, outside of the indie side? The "Miyamoto's new IP"? which btw is most likely going to be an eshop game.

No third party support? that has been the case since the N64 days. Not even the Wii level of success was able to make the system have decent multiplat games.

I think your "hype meter" was waaaaay too high before the conference. I was hyped myself, but I understand how Nintendo works and what to expect from them. Yes, there were thing about the conference that I didn't liked, but it no different than other conferences.

Or you are saying that Smash, MK8, X, Bayonetta 2, DKC (but not looking at it as "Retro's game", but the gameplay itself) and WW HD did absolutely nothing for you?

As a Nintendo fan you should already expect how Nintendo works and what they do. Like Rol said, Wii U is the next GC, and that's how it's going to be. Be happy with what Nintendo is offering (as long as it doesn't look mediocre), don't expect to be happy with everything, doesn't matter if you are a Nintendo, Sony or MS fan.

Glass half full point of view. If instead you look at what they did present, you'd have a very different opinion.

The highlights for me:

Smash gameplay, with Megaman. Cool as fuck, yes!!

Mario Kart 8 looks awesome. Indeed it does! One of the new things.

SM3DW IS new, it have so many unrecognizable features from the original. Coop, Yoshi as a boat, a cat costume which drastically alters Mario's movement. Man if this is not new... It all depends on what you want. If it's a new IP then sure you didn't get it. If you wanted a whole new world for Mario then sure you didn't get it but you know you will and that's all you need to know. New costumes does not = "new", this is more or less a glorified 3DS port (I'm exaggerating of course). The thing is I DON'T know that I'll get a new world for Mario. This might be THE 3D Mario game this gen... Last gen we got lucky and got 2 Galaxies...

DKCR 2. Since when are sequels not new? What is it you want? DKCR is being ported to 3DS this year, so we didn't need this game. I was hoping Retro would do something else.

X. How is this more new than a sequel to Donkey Kong Country? They are different games in different genres, sequels mean different things in these genres. It's more new because it's not a direct sequel? AND it has new features.

Bayo 2, what's more new about X than this? We haven't seen any game play so far. And we've known about this title for almost 1 year now.

What about the Gamecube for example was so much more new in its second year than for U? Man you've been a Nintendo fan for this long, this is how they roll. I had stopped gaming when the GC came out; did not have anything I wanted back then.

Oh my God, how does the 3DS port of DKCR change anything to the need for a sequel. I'm baffled.

Just a new suit? Man have you even played 3DLand, this completely changes how mario plays. Expect another Mario game but think of this as an interim NSMB on steriods, basically.

So Bayo 2 is an unknown, but it's just obvious that it's a sequel with sequel stuff in it, which was never ever a problem.

If the cube didn't please you, then what Nintendo games do you play? Rare games? Man they are not with the big N anymore, get with it.

I agree that DKCR needs a sequel, but is it what it needs NOW? Is it what Retro NEEDS to work with? I don't think so. But DKCFT is only a sum of all the parts. I'm not singling out that game; I'm talking about ALL the games Nintendo showed today. Very little innovation/new ideas was shown.

I am not saying that 3DLand ISN'T a new idea/take on Mario; on the contrary - I've said in this very thread that it was a new, fresh idea, but it's not what the Wii U needs. It's not the path 3D Mario should take. 3D Mario has NEVER copied another Mario game for it's core mechanics. 3D World looks too much like 3DLAnd. I hope you're right in that this will be a new spin off of Mario and that we'll see a "proper" 3D Mario next year or something like that...

I actually never played many Rare games. What brought me back was the Wii with Zelda TP and Mario Galaxy; the innovation that Nintendo had going the whole last gen.

You're absolutely right NinPie, but this thread about Nintendo. I'm expecting MORE from them. That's why Zelda or Mario never goes stale! They always have NEW ideas; they might rehash the names of their characters, but it's always new games.

Are you being serious?

Yes...? Was it something I was unclear about? =/

The reason I will level this criticism at nintendo and not at Sony or MS is because I expect better from nintendo, when you watch a Sony or MS conference you expect shooters, shooters, shooters because that is mostly all that they have, hell their fans seem to think a NEW IP is a game in different clothes.

On the other hand nintendo has alot of different franchises with different gameplay ideas, MK was different from F-zero (well not so anymore), Star Fox is different from DK, Metriod is different from Zelda why are we not seeing these other franchises.
WHY THE HELL NOT, AS I'M TYPING THIS I JUST SEEM TO BE GETTING ANGRIER AT THEM.

But the thing is I'm not comparing Nintendo with others. I'm comparing Nintendo to Nintendo. I'm not expecting Sony or MS to ALWAYS reinvent their franchises, but I do from Nintendo. Just look at Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy... Nothing like each other! Or Zelda Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker... Mario 3D World is just Mario 3D Land U....

I both get and don't get where you are coming from. Not surprised? Understandable. They played it safe, their console was failing so they needed something that would work.

Always expect Nintendo to re-invent? Well, that's just too much to ask.

@Bold: But it isn't! Does ANY 3D Mario look like the previous one? Nintendo re-invented Mario for N64, they re-invented Mario for Sunshine and Galaxy, the re-invented him ye again for 3DLand. That's what they do; they come up with NEW things.

I think part of the  fuss is:

1. People expected something big from retro, designed to show of the Wii U. As it stands the new DK would probably be better suited as a 3DS title.
2. Mario, the game that is supposed to hold crown of best game ever rated and compel people to buy the system looks very pedestrian compared to its ambitious predeccessors
3. The fact that this wasn't a live press conference sucked a ton of the energy from it, no fan fare for the mega man announcement etc.

I don't think it was terrible, I just think it was safe and unremakable. For a team with virtually no 3rd party support, its required they work harder to fill that vacancy. On a positive note the glimpses of watch dogs looks brilliant, assuming it was running off Wii U hardware.

Pretty much this.
