Forums - Nintendo - (Have some crow!) Nintendo showed incredible, hardcore, mature games and yet you complain about 3D Mario?

Why not give it the benefit of the doubt?

It's hard. There are a lot of factors against it.

Looks too simple. I don't want it to be multiplayer focused, single player experiences are the ones that are more compelling. It doesn't look as polished.

Maybe I will adore it, but I can't help my frustration right now.

EDIT: And that cutesy music... eww.

I'll agree that it's not as visually stunning as the Galaxy games but as always with Nintendo games, it's the gameplay that counts.

Signature goes here!

ah, right.. Bayonetta 2, Project X. They really seem great and I´m definetely going to buy them

The problem here are the 1st party productions. We all know that Mario games are always great and fun, but WiiU really needs something different to call people´s attention. Mario 3d, Mario Kart, SSB are just more of the same.

We know that Nintendo can deliver intense experiences - Kid Icarus Uprising on 3ds is a great example, an intense hybrid of shooter/action game with Nintendo typical fantasy, the result was just gorgeous. This was the right time for Nintendo to bring back those beloved franchises like Starfox, Metroid, F-Zero, or even another of those incredible sports games they did in the past, like Excitebike 64, Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding.

Instead, they prefer just to play it safe right now, choosing their best-seller franchises.... but at the same time, it´s just more of the same, no real surprise, and that was a wasted opportunity. WiiU is the cheapest console right now and a few games with intense gameplay would definetely atract more gamers.

I often agree with that sentiment, but the levels in the Galaxy games combined both excellently. I will even miss collecting Star Bits and spinning. Those moves adapted to Mario maginifically.

And when you push gameplay too heavily and ignore other aspects of the game, you might trade games like PM:TTYD for something like this:

I agree with your point, but to me that seems to apply much more so to RPGs than most anything else.

The problem is when there's no third party support you're reliant on Nintendo to provide new experiences. And instead what we got was a majority of games that could honestly have passed as reskinned versions of wii or 3ds games (DKCR2, Mario, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, Smash).

I think Nintendo fans are used to a greater level of imagination in their games, but the old men in charge of Nintendo have well and truly soaked that out of the company.

You saw 4 main franchises from them today. SSB (which looks awesome for a game that has still more then one year of development left) Mario kart 8 (looks bloody fantastic) 3D Mario (kinda dissapointing but it will help them greatly cause it looks different from the other Mario's unlike NSMB). DKC - which totally looks like game defining how a 2D Platformer (along with Rayman Legends) has to look like and play like. Miyamoto already kinda confirmed that we will see a Star Fox along the way, Retro today kinda confirmed that they will make a Metroid, no SMT x FE was shown today. We nearly saw the new Zelda today.  I don't know. There is still room for surpirses. There is room fore much more.

And also, wtf did you expect from Smash Bros. today besides better graphics, improved gameplay? It looks fantastic in tis state of development. And we still don't know the other features. We don't even know the name yet.

When you screw your most important flagship title, you can't expect nice reactions.

Mario Kart?

Mario Kart is the best selling title, but it's not the most critically acclaimed and polished series. (Even if MK8 looks amazing.)

I'm talking about 3D Mario.

Why not give it the benefit of the doubt?

Nintendo hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt. Galaxy and especially 3D Land were not the pinnacles of 3D platforming design and...

...I can't do this. :D

If Galaxy wasn't what was it then???? lol

Project X is a first-paty title. I also wouldn't exactly call Mario Kart 8 more of the same.

That being said, I agree that Nintendo should do more. Not that they don't do anything (again, Project X is first-party), but it takes a lot to move the spotlight away from competing new hardware.

Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, of course.

The new 3D Mario was probably the most disappointing game from the stuff they showed.

Galaxy was genre defining for 3D platformers. Great concept, great visuals and great gameplay. 3D World just looks extremely uninspired. Basically like the NSMB series just with one more dimension and these games were already getting milked pretty hard lately.
Until now I was all for splitting the Mario platformer series into 3D and 2D, but that might not be necessary in the future anymore.

Prediction: Worst rated console 3D Mario on Metacritic.
