I had the exact same problem yesterday, I tried to join fred's, possum's and hells' games but it would take me to the punching bag room without detecting the players. So I created a room and luckily Riot joined. I thought I wouldn´t be able to play on brawl night but at least I played against Riot.

Yup, that's exactly what happened to me.
Can't believe Nintendo still have this kind of problems with their connection.
