Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Price, Unadjusted for Inflation

Nice chart. Quite a few shockers there, when we remember it...

Gamecube and Dreamcast only 200, versus PS2's and original Xbox1's 300!!

Also, N64 only 200 vs. PlayStation 300 and Saturn 400!!

Launch prices can be a little deceptive to compare directly though.  By the time the N64 came out all 3 were at $199.

Both the Saturn and PS1 had a price cut in May 1996 to $199, and the N64 launched in Sept 1996 at $199.

Great analysis.

It's an interesting topic. Inflation, real disposable income, perceptions, pricing and such stuff.

It sure is interesting. When you think about it, these historical price comparisons don't matter much, whether they are adjusted for inflation or not. What matters is the here and now. If you consider the state of the worldwide economy, people's wages and the worrisome unemployment rates in many countries, the Xbox One's price is definitely not a good idea; and this still completely ignores the change in policies that people now don't own games anymore, but just licenses to play them (which makes the price even worse).

I don't think it's a good idea either to price it at $500. MS is making lots of mistakes with the Xbone I believe. I believe it's going to struggle.

But that self-confidence! They seem to have crazy high confidence in their product.

What's interesting is that the NES is Nintendo's most expensive console ever (in today's dollars), though strangely the GameCube isn't on the list, which is odd.

Also interesting that the Wii U is rather inexpensive, relative to the rest of Nintendo's console offerings.

The Gamecube launched at $199 in NA so I'd guess be roughly $393 as pretty sure XBox was $199 in NA as well.

The NES was prohibitively expensive for many, we had our 2600 until 1990 when got an NES for roughly $70 with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt.  Similar situation with SNES, it wasn't until PS2 that I got a console near launch so I sympathize a lot with people now buying a 360/PS3/Wii.

I was happy to see bad reactions everywhere to the xbone reveal and Phil Harrison statements that followed. My faith is shaken today because most gamers seem overwhelmed with what the conference showed despit not addressing the main issues they have with the console. The crazy confidence isn't so crazy when you browse the forums. I get the feeling that people are actually satisfied with not knowing enough.

Really? Starting another thread talking about the price and then basicaly just bashing on the DRM again? We had like 1000 of this in the past weeks, just reply to one of them instead of starting your own one next time.

You are missing the point, this is a comparison of value. Surely you agree that intrusive DRM and lack of ownership negatively impact the value of a device.

No I do not agree. And just go in the others threads if you want to start another bashing or one way debate about that check every 24h.
And while I understand the overall point of your thread, this is still another flamebait thread you used to bash again on the DRM and call the Xbox One a rental system.

3DO and Neo Geo were just plain rip offs, no wonder they did so badly. They came out in the 1990's as well, so i can't imagine what they would cost now

How...could you. The biggest problem with the Neo Geo was not the price of the console but the games. Hope you were ready to shell out $300 for the arcade perfect version of Metal Slug.

The Xbox launched at $299, six months later all 3 cut their prices (PS2 -$100, XB -$100, GC -$50).

Ah, thank you.  Guess I had forgotten.  I bought them at $300-PS2, $150-GC and $100-XBX

The adjusted for inflation chart really puts things in perspective. The 32-64 bit gen was pretty damn expensive, and i agree with some other posters on here that the N64, even though it launched at only $199, didn't feel quite that cheap in reality. Reason being is it was the first Nintendo console to not come with a pack in game and came with just one controller.... games were $60 and up for it at launch and a 2nd controller was $30. Adjusted for inflation, that's another $87 and $43 respectively in today's money.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Well. The Xbox One will be $599 AUD on launch, not sure if I should laugh or cry. My bank account is going to dislike me come Christmas. :P
Heck, that's a new Radeon 7970 with a heap of games to go with it... Worth it for Halo I suppose, which is all I would really use it for in the end.

I'm thrilled with that if it happens! I was thinking $699. Remember also how much the PS3 launched here for? It could be worse.
