Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Basic Being Recalled! Confirmed by GameStop - [ UPDATED ]

[UPDATEhttp://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5401658

Gaming retailer GameStop has initiated a recall on the 8GB Wii U Basic set, CNET has been able to confirm.

On Tuesday, gaming blog Kotaku cited a source who claimed that GameStop had requested its stores around the U.S. to return all new and unopened Wii U Basic sets still on store shelves. The return is expected to take place on June 18 -- a week after the big E3 gaming expo.

CNET on Wednesday called several GameStop stores to confirm the Kotaku report. All of those stores confirmed that the corporate office had initiated a recall, but they weren't sure why. The message GameStop corporate sent to stores has also not indicated why there has been a need for a recall.

Nintendo's Wii U has been suffering from poor sales since its launch. The company's 8GB Basic set costs customers $300, but some retailers have cut the price on that version lately. The higher-end Deluxe set, which adds more storage and comes with some additional accessories, sets customers back $350.

CNET has contacted Nintendo to determine why a recall is underway. We will update this story when we have more information.

As dire as the news may sound, my guess is Nintendo is ceasing the 8GB SKU and replacing the mainboard and repackaging them as 32GB Wii Us.

Not really a major big deal, but an unfortunate end to the 8GB model as it couldn't quietly fade away.

It's not dire, it's exciting! I'm thinking 8gig wipe out and 32gig price drop announcement at e3.

yep. Nintendo is going to change the 8GB to 32GB of flash memory and resell them as deluxe.

Since this is happening one week after E3, I expect big news on new bundling options and quite possibly a price change for $299 for WiiU. (only one sku from now on) and various pricing depending on bundled game.

Hell, they may go crazy and drop it to $249 to $279 and have $299 the price point with a bundled game besides NL.

I also hope this corresponds to a set of free digital stuff from eShop for us early adopters.

Finally! If they make a 120GB version and sell that for 299 euros/dollars. The 32GB version can get a discount to 249 euros/dollars to hopefully improve the sales.

No, I'd say it's pretty dire for Nintendo.

Still, perhaps some quick, decisive action now, followed up with a barrage of quality software, will jumpstart the Wii U like it did the 3DS. Or perhaps it will work out like the PS3, where the flow is staunched but the bleeding just never seems to stop.
