Consoles are fine and provide a gameplay experience that is easy and generally hassle free. I don't believe these will be the last consoles. Thats more than i can say for Ouya/gamestick... which will be forgotten about or at least niche.

I'll be honest, I didn't watch all of the two videos but jees.. just listening to that guy kills any excitement I have for video games. Not because of his argument for each console, but how bloody depressing his outlook is for the games industry and games. All I see is a jaded gamer who's bored of playing the same old games.. yet, he still buys them and reviews them. Alright then.

Oh and the old diminishing returns chestnut lol.

Lol yeah i was going to say he came across as jaded... he's depressing and should not play games... perhaps thats his angle on youtube. We have angry gamer, now we have depressed gamer...lol

That's the same reason they're going to standard PC-based architectures. Backwards compatibility will be an easier thing to handle, production costs and development costs will be lower because it's more common components.

This transition between consoles/PCs has been in the making for years, the manufacturers have just tried to avoid it. I imagine this might our last true console-generation. Following ones, might simply be more PC-hybrid based.

Ultimately, I believe we will end up seeing more 'game' specific machines that are essentially closed PCs. Publishers will have a lot more power in these models for example Sony, Nintendo, etc. It will be the games they create moreso than the 'systems' to play them on.

As long as consoles have

1. Exclusive games

2. Are the same for tens of millions of users making it easy for devs to make amazing looking stuff

3. Cost less than PCs with the same specs

4. Are supported for 10 years with both games and software patches that add new stuff and apps

I will still have a reason to get them and I'm sure many others will.

I don't feel the vibe about how bad the industry is right now. In fact this is the most exited about it I have ever been. It has always been my dream as a gamer to be able to take my games anywhere, and be able to multi-task. I like to be able to watch a sports game during the regular season, but I don't get all that into it unless something big happens. I have always wanted to be able to run PiP of a game and a TV event.

How is it not great that I can sit back and listen to my own music while I try to break high scores in a game? What is wrong with being able to browse the web mid game and watch a youtube video that someone texted me about? All of these things are what I always wanted, and now PS4 and XBO are finally bringing that to the table.

Now all I want is a true PlayStation Phone or a Xbox Phone that I can use as my dedicated portable device. That is exactly what I have always wanted. One for the road that does all I need, and one for the house. Two units that work as one, and achieve everything I need. Pay my bills, make a budget, play games, buy music/TV/Movies, take pictures, shoot movies, make phone calls, just two devices.

With all of that going on, the games just keep getting better. More input options with PS Vita + PS4 + PS4 Camera + Move, and Kinect, and the gamepad. The internet is expending both single player and multiplayer. Modding is becoming more and more common, indie games and apps are finding a place. New genres are being explored, and more options are available in genres that have been around. There are games that are 5 hours of unmatched gameplay, that you can buzz through time and time again, and get new experiences, or just to enjoy it once more. Then there are the 200 hour epics that you can sink a couple months into.

There are to many moaners and complainers. This is a massive industry filled with consumers and developers that all love games for different reasons. There is something out their for you, so go find it and enjoy it, when you can't find anything you like there is more than just games in the world. Or maybe, you should get a job in the industry and make what you want. Take a step back and look, things are really great, and they just keep getting better.
