Forums - Sony - Sony officially states that PlayStation 4 will not have DRM against used games

Nope. That's a december 2012 patent, as you can see here: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2013/0007892.html

Unlocking the game would be a simple question of connecting onto the internet. The console wouldn't be always online that way, and you could "enjoy the PS4 without an internet connection at all" if you bought only new games. Anyway, I'm not saying they will use that patent or anything, but it's entirely possible and it would go along with what Sony said about the PS4.

Omg a ttechnology company filing similar patents *gasp* shocked

By the way, im pretty sure that patent is old as hell and one came before the ps3 launch as well that sony neverimplemented l

January 2013.

Yes, sony files many patenTs each year. I just giogle searched this and read people mention there was a similar patent before ps3 so im not the only one

They made the patent, that means Sony is interested in blocking used games. Maybe not now, maybe in the future, maybe is for 3rd parties alone, maybe for themselves. Nobody really knows, but it gives us a lot of room to speculate, especially since MS is doing it.

Sony has been filing patents like this for years. It doesnt mean it will be implemented. It really doesnt give us room to speculate. Sony already shot down online requirements and the purpose of blocking used games is to increase revenue which this patent wont do.

Online passes and the patent are a real stretch and straw grasping

To my knowledge Sony has only made 2 patents in relation of used games: this one and one early in the PS3 life. One could very well argue that the first patent became what we know now as online passes.

Everything is PR talk, we have evidence (in the OP) that Sony first party games won't be blocked, BUT there's nothing stopping 3rd parties for doing it, they are doing it with the Xbone, they are going to do it for the PS4 as well.

Not every 3rd party publishers will implement pay walls, but if we see an increase in profits coming from EA and Activision (the ones that are most likely going to block used games) then other publishers will follow suit, no question asked. Will that happen? nobody knows, we just have to wait a couple of years and see.

so just like what Yoshida said after the reveal...

it will be intersting to see what devs act on this...

Again, it is so funny watching people try and justify MS's direction for next gen (with DRM and online/Kinect requirements) by suggesting that Sony will put into play something similar. Let's just ignore what several heads of Sony have said, just so we can spread false info and put the PS4 in a bad light.

The PS4 WILL NOT require the PS4 Eye to be connected. We have had no rumors that it would, yet you keep seeing people act like it's a possibility. However, we DID keep hearing rumors that the Xbox One would require the Kinect to be connected, and they were proven true.

The PS4 WILL NOT have any HW DRM or require an internet connection. This has been stated time and time again, yet you get people saying they will. Of course, quite a few of the people saying that are only praying it does, just so the Xbox One won't be the lone console doing this. Yoshida's comments mean that 3rd parties will have to come up with their own system for DRM, independent of the PS4's HW, which will only work for multiplayer. Well, unless they want to face a HUGE backlash from gamers who can't play single player campaigns on an offline PS4.

Actually, this comment from Michael Denny (Senior VP of WW Studios) that was made back in March should have put ALL of this BS to rest (or more accurately, prevented it from happening.)  "So I think two of the other pillars we talked about interms of design were simplicity and immediacy. Even taking back a step from here, PlayStation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all." But, hey, what does he know?

they are doing it with the Xbone, they are going to do it for the PS4 as well

That's not the only reason to file patents these days.  A large percentage of patents filed by companes nowadays are never implemented.  They're filed for strategic, legal, and financial reasons.   Let's say Sony has no plans for DRM, but they hear that MS does.  So they file a patent before MS does.  Now if MS does implement a DRM system that infringes on the patent that Sony just filed, they either get sued or they have to pay Sony royalties to use that technology.   It's especially common in the mobile phone industry where companies like Samsung and Apple and suing each other over patent infringement just about every other day.

I guess it's not possible to have a decent debate with you. If you read my comment you would have known that non of the things I said are factual. All this is a waiting game, all we can do know is speculate.

But if we go by your logic then I can ask you the same question.
