I don't think 2 games from 1 franchise that they didn't create can compete with 4 franchises (franchises created by Naughty Dogs themselves).

None of that affects the  quality of the games, and Retro's best can easily match ND's best.

It does matter. The ability to create great new IPs would put one studio over another. Even better when one studio has quality, quantity and variety.

Whether a game is a new IP or not doesn't determine its quality. Retro hits the same high watermark of game quality as ND. Quantity is both a plus and a minus as not all ND's games are great, even if their top ones are masterpieces.

It does matter whether a game is a new IP or not. Obviously, creating a successful new IP is much harder, especially these days.

Also, Retro never made a game that has as much of an impact in a generation as Uncharted did. Record-breaking number of awards as well and influenced so many other games. Not to mention that Naughty Dogs hit that height several times.

To reinvent an existing IP in a way that brings  in new gamers while retaining old fans can be just as difficult  as creating a new IP.

Metroid Prime also won an immense number of awards, and is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time.

And Uncharted's impact wasn't that big.

It is fairly big. The only other game that has been more influential is CoD. Heck, even DoA5 has segments influenced by Uncharted.

Edit: A shame that Retro Studios hasn't been able to re-reach that height they reached more than 10 years ago....

UC didn't have a big effect. Most TPS games in the 7th gen took their cues from Gears of War, which predates Uncharted.

And in terms of critical reception, ND technically hasn't ever reached quite the level that Prime did.

Critical reception is only a popularity indicator anyway. There's no objective measure of a game's quality, it's all just opinion.

The whole cinematic gameplay is taken from Uncharted. Even Ken Levine says that he is influenced by Uncharted.

Depends where you're looking. GR has Uncharted 2 above Metroid Prime, which, by the way, came out 10 years ago when it didn't have to deal with troll reviewers like HonestGamers, Polygon or Quarter To Three.

Also, time to face the facts - that Retro is gone.

lol retro is gone? when did you see the last real gamer from them? 2010, exactly. DKCR was great. You think they do nothing for 3-4 years?

Cinematic gameplay has been around quite a bit longer than Uncharted.

Honestgamers, Polygon, and Quarter To Three are legitimate reviewers, people just don't like them because they don't gush over their favourite games. People take reviews far too seriously. They're just opinions.

And Retro hasn't gone anywhere. In fact, they've been expanding and hiring recently.

Where did I say that Retro is gone? And nice avatar...

I think that ND is on another level to Retro.
True, they are two completely different developers, focused on making different genres of games, however ND's technical precision and expertise wins it for me.

Just my opinion.

Peace
