Forums - Gaming - If there was a "hardcore" gamer backlash against a Sony/MS DRM conspiracy (hypothetically) how much of the market would that represent?

How much market share would MS and Sony lose, each?

< 1million 12 15.19%

1-5 million 17 21.52%

5-10 million 18 22.78%

10-15 million 12 15.19%

>15 million 20 25.32%

Total:79

Well, since we already know Sony isn't going down the same path as MS, I don't see why they are included in this poll. I guess you could change Sony to the 3rd parties that choose to enact some form of DRM themselves on the PS4.

As for the poll, I say about 10M-15M. Of course, you also have the core market that will probably turned off by DRM and (almost) always online, even if they don't actively voice this opinion online. This pertains even more so to smaller countries/regions in EU, Asia, and SA that don't have the most reliable internet, or any at all. And then you have the friends and families of those gamers that may be swayed by them or just decide to purchase the console they have so they can play together.

So, while this may start out relatively small, it has the potential to balloon to affect greater than the original 10M-15M.

the PS4 wont have DRM so they will just increase the userbase.

I agree with everyone. This could spiral out of control for Micro. If you hit enough of the user-base. I never bothered getting a 360 just cause of the failure rates. And the 360 S never changed that issue in my head.

when MSony's reveals can get near 10M live stream viewers during the middle of the day when there are a ton of people like me who had to wait to watch until after work...

>15M easy.

edit: crap your poll is confusing.  lose each?  well those stated 15M easy are the hardcores which obviously is spread across MS/Sony/Nintendo/Steam.   ...but let me also say that the "non-core" tend to buy the system their friends have.  if the first 15M core (aka early adopters) all shun one in favor of the other they can turn the entire market in one direction.

exactly.  Core gamers set the trends then their friends buy.  Core gamers bought 360 early on and many of those people's friends bought it.  A lot of people get their news from core gamers too.  So if they get a bunch of ranting from their gamer friends about DRM and always online they will look at other systems.

Bascially what I'm asking is how important a consumer force do you think the internet dwelling gamer fan is?

We are not very important at all. We are a vocal minority of what the public really wants.

<1%, but it won't happen. Hardcore gamers will buy the Xbone or the PS4 anyway.

Yep, "hardcore" people are hypocrites.  They are really just fanboys.

They jump on something a competitor does, but then if their console or game of choice does it, they twist it into a good thing.

There are very few people who actually commit to their boycots of companies like not buying EA or something like that.

What you call "Hardcore gamer" are trendsetters for this industry. And trendsetter are the prime consumer tracktion to a platform.

In the case of Apple which doesn't innovate anymore, and sells more or more crappy but overpriced products, they are losing all their trendsetters thus the fall in sales and stocks and it will continue. But because they have a niche approach of the PC market, several products to sell, each being updated every year, they can take slow down this fall.

In the case of next-gen consoles, this could ruin the sales, the market and the brands definitely, because both Sony and Microsoft are only counting on one single product (PS4/XBone) that is supposed to last from 5 to 7 years as is it, and the concurrence is high between PC, Mobile Devices, Alternative Consoles and the three big players who have already trouble bringing in exclusives...

So because forced DRM, blocked used-games, always-on are really grave issues that any casual/couch potato can understand, and because they just follow what trendsetters/geeks tell them, there aren't enough stupid people to buy the Xbone or PS4 if they have DRM.

Also medias have a role : propaganda/PR. As you can see, every bad corrupt journalists such as on Kotaku or Penny Arcade have tried and are trying to manipulatepeople into thinking that DRM/No-Used/Always-On is okay or good, but even they have trouble.

For most people Xbox One or PS4 are their only options. These consoles provide the type of games they want. A Wii U isn't an option and going PC-only isn't either.

Most people will get a PS4/One regardless.of any DRM. They'll learn to deal with it by buying less games and being more picky and "safe" with their purchases.

You mean like all those people that were going to boycott Call of Duty on Steam then ended up playing the game anyways? If the vocal internet was the dominate form of society COD would have sold like crap.

People crying on the internet for change might not like what is going to happen, but they still end up buying the game/system anyways.

It's just that simple.

at least 10 million, it's not a small market anymore and i'll join them if PS4 had some kind of DRM, it's not acceptable and we must make this clearer to them if they haven't got it already
