What you call "Hardcore gamer" are trendsetters for this industry. And trendsetter are the prime consumer tracktion to a platform.
In the case of Apple which doesn't innovate anymore, and sells more or more crappy but overpriced products, they are losing all their trendsetters thus the fall in sales and stocks and it will continue. But because they have a niche approach of the PC market, several products to sell, each being updated every year, they can take slow down this fall.
In the case of next-gen consoles, this could ruin the sales, the market and the brands definitely, because both Sony and Microsoft are only counting on one single product (PS4/XBone) that is supposed to last from 5 to 7 years as is it, and the concurrence is high between PC, Mobile Devices, Alternative Consoles and the three big players who have already trouble bringing in exclusives...
So because forced DRM, blocked used-games, always-on are really grave issues that any casual/couch potato can understand, and because they just follow what trendsetters/geeks tell them, there aren't enough stupid people to buy the Xbone or PS4 if they have DRM.
Also medias have a role : propaganda/PR. As you can see, every bad corrupt journalists such as on Kotaku or Penny Arcade have tried and are trying to manipulatepeople into thinking that DRM/No-Used/Always-On is okay or good, but even they have trouble.
