Forums - Sony - PS3 Slim or Super Slim

My ps3 launch console recently stopped playing discs. For some reason the blue ray lens won't read anything, so I am going to buy another PS3 on time for what looks to be some of the best games coming out this year.

My question to fellow PS3 owners: Is there a difference between the slim and super slim other than, I don't know- console size?

If there isn't, then I think I will go with the super slim.

Edit: Thanks for the helpful replies everyone,  I will be buying a PS3 slim!

um im sure people were having some problems with the super slim if im not mistaken, anyway the ps3 slim is sexy whereas the new slim looks cheap and ugly

ok looks like the new version has heating problems

My ps3 slim 120 gb's HDMI fried. So I got ps3 super slim 12gb. I m really disappointed in it.

First of all it doesnt have slot loading drive. Its like ps2 slims drive. The bad thing is it effects game disk and damages them over time.

Secondly its build quality is poor, very poor indeed. It seems it will come apart if I put some pressure.

The av power socket is loose. Its a common problem.

Take my advice and go with ps3 slim.

Dat Newegg PS3Slim deal(You also get Bioshock Infinite and $50 PSN card lol): http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1307658&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=1312731&SID=

I would say just pick up the super slim. If you don't mind having a fairly ugly system.

I'm pretty satisfied with the super slim, it's much more quiet than my Fat PS3. However, my brother owns a Slim, which is also really quiet. But it changes once you put a disc into the Super Slim, the console becomes quite loud when reading from a disc, though it never gets as loud as my fat. But if you play games from discs a lot, I would say go for the Slim. If you play from hard-drive, it doesn't make a difference.

Personally, I prefer the design of the Super Slim. I don't really like the design of the slim all that much, but that is completely up to personal preference. Also, consider that if you're going for Super Slim, you'll need those Hard-Drive brackets to put the Hard Drive from your fat in it. You'll also need to do a backup, because the hard drive will be formatted when you put it in another console. I just uploaded all my save games to the cloud and downloaded my games again.

I have the slim, it's much sleeker looking than the super slim, and it feels like a higher quality. You can usually find one for pretty cheap on ebay, I don't think you'll be able to find one new, but maybe I'm wrong.

Slim... but you do not need to buy a new console.

It should only take you about 35 minutes to dismantle the PS3 bluray drive and clean the lens, then another 25 to assemble it again.

You can find dozens of tutorials on youtube. If the disc doesn't spin, then you just need to buy a new lens / BR drive, they range from $35 - $75. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do these.
