Forums - Gaming - Microsoft should consider selling Xbox and Bing businesses, says key analyst

Oh, another anal-yst opened their mouth. I must admit I envy them and want their job!

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Thanks, needed a good hearty laugh.

I agree. They should consider it. The Xbox brand is too valuable though. Who would they sell it to? Who has the money to buy it? Sony doesn't need it, Nintendo doesn't want it....maybe Samsung or Apple.

@bold. That makes no sense. They are a huge business with tons of money, and proper separation of their divisions. The xbox is certainly not what's hurting MS' OS market, it's pretty clear that Apple is giving them a hard time period, and I don't think there is much MS can do about it but try to increase their brand affection with the mainstream consumer which, ta-da, the xbox is achieving for them.

@underlined. For example, tell me how exactly Samsung is one of the reasons MS went with the xbox?

@MS OS not enough. That is just bs, you could say that about any company: Sony, Google, Apple all big companies want to diversify and expand so as to mitigate the risk of having all your eggs in one basket, and go fetch the next available piece of pie.

Tell that to the shareholders. MS non OS profits are nothing to them really as far as they are concerned.

Now this is where your ignorance of the actual business of MS is all too transparent

MS is longer only OS centric.  You literally do not know what you are talking about.

Revenue of windows division in the last quarter was $14bn of the $55bn total quarterly revenue

Profit from the windows division was 9bn of the 21bn in the quarter. So windows is now less than half of the profits and about a quarter of the revenue.

Are you saying that they dont want that extra $12bn in profit?

On the one hand people like you say they are spreading themselves to thin on the other you say they are doomed becuase PC sales are falling.  Its contradictory, ill thought out and plain wrong.

Thank you, I was too lazy to post this.

The point is that MS is growing constantly on a lot of fronts.

EDD is growing and nowhere near the early days (1 billion USD profit per year)
Business division is growing with MS Office 365 (24billion USD profit per year)
Server and Tools (a division he probably never even heard of) is making great steps. (8 billion USD profit per year)
The Windows division is still growing, no matter what people say (14 billion USD profit per year)

Heck if nothing spectacular happens, the online division (Bing) will be posting profits for this year as well.

MS is so much more than just windows.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

@Kowen. Out of curiosity what is the source of that non-OS profit?

I'd prefer not have to read all that if possible, can I get a summary from whoever?

Stage does have a point then if we're talking about now. Problem is xbox has existed for 13 years.

Server and Tools is mostly OS-related, I'd imagine, at least to an extent (Hyper-V and whatnot).

What is Microsoft Business Division, that one's interesting.
