Forums - Gaming - The industry is driving me crazy and why Nintendo are a great example of "doing things right"

You seem to be saying that most of the problems with the industry can be traced to games having large budgets.  If that's the case, then games with smaller budgets should be performing better.  However, that's not the case.  It's the middle-budget games that have totally died out this generation, with many middle-level developers going belly-up.

And I'm still confused about what you're saying with Steam.  Because Steam has sales a lot they get a free pass?  Despite being a DRM pioneer?

Also, isn't it a bit unfair to compare the sales of Nintendo software with those of third-party developers?  Nintendo software franchises were built on a monopoly situation where Nintendo software was given prime position.  That's something any developer would kill for.  You think it doesn't help Mario sales greatly that Nintendo also makes the console?  Or the same with Halo or Uncharted?  And those are the big budget games you say are killing the industry, but they're doing quite well for themselves.

You're seeing the effect, and ignoring the cause. Mid-tier games have disappeared because their source of funding has dried up: the big publishers are far more interested in only funding the high-end titles, and are increasingly expressing open disinterest in anything else. The pattern you're identifying of established market players retreating to the higher-end market has been repeated endlessly in the past, and will be repeated in the future.

I'm with you on Steam though. Never really saw the difference myself.

Regarding Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft titles, there is nothing unfair in the comparison, and I can't see where you're coming from.

One point about Nintendo that i think all gamers should appreciate is that they are trying to keep the mid-level game alive. That really seems to be the thing that's falling off the face of the earth: it's not super-AAA and it's not an indie or mobile game, and i think that's where home console gaming has really lost diversity is in the mid-level games

Applying The Formula says that mid-tier games aren't viable in an era of bloated and bloating budgets though.

Very good read.

Im not saying the size of the budget is attributable to the games performance on the market. Im saying that a lot of problems currently residing within the industry are due to mis-management of budgets and direction. Games with large budgets should be games that have a guaranteed audience. Games like Call of Duty. Battlefield. FIFA. Halo. Gran Turismo. Gears of War. Grand Theft Auto. Not games like Tomb Raider, a franchise that sells on average ~3 Million units.

I agree that a lot of middle-budget developers have died out. The question I would put to you would be - Who would you class as a mid-budget dev/ publisher? From Software? Level 5? Could we put for example, SEGA and possibly Capcom into this tier?

What Im saying is that if these companies were competant, then there wouldnt be need for DRM. The thread isnt a "Fuck DRM!" thread. Its a "DRM wouldnt be needed if..." thread.

I will get a PS4 but depending on SONY's stance will probably only use it for games absolutely not coming to Wii U.

Seems like there will be a lot of them.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

You said you wouldn't get Sony's first parties if they go DRMish, right? So I guess Japan Studio is out of the question. Remeber that Square and Capcom don't necessarily release everything in Nintendo's consoles as well, we don't know if more developers go the "keep away from Nintendo route", it is a possibility. There's also JRPGs that have released for PS3 exclusively as well. Apart from that, man, I don't even know how the freaking PS4 even looks, how can I tell you what games are coming in the future? lol

Handheld game port and last generation game port. May as well toss in Deus Ex and RE: Revelations.
