Forums - Gaming - What can Sony do to compete with Xbox One on the non-gaming features side?

I dont thhink they can win, they couldnt with PS3.

What they can do though, is upgrade or improve everything that they currently have... With one key point - Keeping it away from a subscription.

I think the only thing they could win over the consumer with in that regard is that they offer similar, though not as good, services for free.

If they put it behind PS+ then they will fail.

uh isn't cross game voice and video chat already confirmed?

isn't the purpose for them purchasing gaikai them giving users access to cloud features? ( funny enough the ps3 had cloud features before the xbox 360 )

as for the whole motion and voice control thing i personally have no use for it as i still find using physical controls far more convenient but regardless i'd expect the new eye toy to even though it won't as accurate at least be competitive in terms of non-gaming features

imo you really only seem to be calling out features that for the most part we already know will be available on both platforms

You forget to list the biggest non-gaming Xbone feature... TV, televesion, cable box.

No. Sony will not compete with this crap IMO... thanks Kaz.

Even if you have in game video chat built in (which I am not sure you do on PS4), its not Skype. Skype is available on every device and is the most used video service by a huge margin. Having 2 dudes talk while gaming is one thing, with skype you can talk to your girlfriend in another country on her cell phone or tablet while you're playing COD lol.

Gaikai is a solid streaming service but I bet you any money that it uses either Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure to stream games. Its not a cloud computing solution. Thare are very few companies with cloud storage computing services available. Even apple uses Microsofts Azure for the iCloud.

Eyetoy may have similar gesture control as Kinect 2, however I don't see them being able to implement voice in to the platform nearly as good through eyeToy. It appears Kinect 2.0 will be designed to understand actual speaking and not just specific voice commands.

I'm just calling out features that Xbox One has shown working. Sony did a lot of talk during their conference however not much was demonstated.

One thing I want as far as Multi media features on the PS4 is some kind of exclusive Anime streaming deal with Funimation or something. Not like Neon Alley or Crunchy Roll, I would gladly cancel my Netflix account.

Deals like this are great and I'm sure they will exist on both sides. The thing is that Microsoft can easily match a deal like this of their own if they see its a big hit... The things I am talking about have more to do with features which Sony may not be able to match.

All Sony needs to do for me personally is make sure their online services are up to a good standard and focus on games. I don't need Skype, IE, Music, Movies, and cable switching. I have devices designed for that. I want a game machine, so focus all of your attention on making games better for the next generation.

Skype - I'm not sure but Vita have Skype so why PS4 can't have too? Anyway others voice/video calling service will be supported by PS4 too.

Skydrive - Sony have their own cloud storage service and they will make others patners for that too.

Windows - Windows kernel better for multitasking? Sorry but it is worst than Linux and Mac OSX (BSD based) for multitasking... Sony will use a OS with BSD kernel and I can't see worst multitasking here... but I agree Windows have better UI but Sony can put a good UI over BSD too.

Azure - That is yet uncertain over the cloud services... Sony bought Gaikai for nothing?

Kinect 2.0 - That is really better than PSEye.

What are you talking about? Windows kernel is as good as any other OS for multitasking/threading...
It is the same kernel used in Windows Server; running background process/threads is not BETTER on MacOS or Linux (by the way MacOS is based on Linux...)...
It is one thing to dislike Windows user interface or ecosystem but saying clueless comments about the kernel is another one :)
The windows kernel (NT kernel based on Unix) is one of the best OS out there and is has nothing to do with what the anti-MS-Windows train is QQing about.

But sony has the flexibility to evolve and update if they choose to, which is great for those considering XBone vs PS4.
