I think this design has to do with 2 things:

1. These things will be placed in tight and possibly sealed TV stands and wall units, with minimal air circulation

2. Silence is the new cool

These AMD APUs are not really pushing the thermal and peformance boundaries like the Xenos GPU did back for Xbox 360. Much less heat will be generated with the Xbox One.

Ah crap, it looks like console needs to be opened to access the hard drive.

If that thing breaks I'll have to open the console. I wonder if the PS4 is doing that as well.
