Forums - Microsoft - Phil Harrison says the activation fee for used games on Xbox One will be the full price of the game

Tagged games:

The only effect this will have is that people will go, do I really want to spend $60 on this game that I'll never get back? And the answer will be yes only for the most prestigious games with lots of replay value.

Expect abysmal attach rates. And some more midsize developer bankruptcies.

The problem being that Sony might doing something similar and are keeping quiet about this as well.

Can't be 100% sure though, I guess.

I honestly can't believe this, I thought it was some kind of joke / troll thread.

But MS is saying they aren't blocking used games either.

indeed, but you will need pay for it ;)

i'm not against some tax to run used games, but $60 is too much.

I doubt they will. MS got perks for a reason from EA on their sports titles.

Sony is also seeming to adopt a "leave it to publishers" thing.  They keep dodging the question. sure they may "allow" them, but not like there are 100% no fees/roadblocks.

Has this been confirmed?

Given that a lot of 360's more mainstream usage came from annual titles like CoD or Madden (that are then resold towards next year's purchase) this is not going to go over well.

Between this and having to go online to activate the thing in the first place (probably not an issue with COD so much, but I'm assuming there are still some "Madden gamers" who live out in the sticks with bad/no online) it seems a good way to piss away their "sure fire" domination of the US market.

No way. They said the same thing about xbox live. Americans now love paying for xbox live. These new fees and regulations will mean nothing to them. They will pay whatever MS ask them to.

Good move by MS I think.

Not so sure about most of mainland Europe or Japan (and I believe MS lost a lot of sales in these regions because of  fees) but it's not like they will be losing out a great deal there. The extra money they get out of the US will surely recoup that loss.

Interesting stuff. I'm looking forward to hearing about this used game solution. I really can't believe Microsoft would screw GameStop, so perhaps they have some kind of partnership thing planned?

There has to be something. Would they really want to piss them off?

Yeah, there has to be something.  Remember, Microsoft is the company that doesn't do Day One digital releases because they said they value their partnerships with retailers too much.

And they definitely wouldn't stab GameStop in the back unless they knew Sony was going to do it, too.

Good point, where is Sony?

They should be boasting about not doing this.

Actually that's not not a point at all.

Why would they? They already stated their take on used games, always on etc. So the same could be asked about Nintendo, why are they keeping quiet about it? They already tied Nintendo ID's to Wii U's so maybe that's next, right?

Just because you imply that Sony will do that, doesn't mean they will. We know MS certainly will.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

I'm guessing they'll have partnerships with particular retailers/chains in which MS gives them a little something for reselling games. In return, MS will get their investment back and retailers/publishers will remain happy. This way, they will reduce used games in the market and force people to buy games new.

Where´s BenV?...I´d like to read his opinion on that.
