Forums - Microsoft - XBOX ONE requires a fee to play used games. And if the game is new the fee is $60!

This is actually a GOOD THING.

Now you can buy a game, install it to your HDD, SELL IT TO GAMESTOP!

If you think about it, this will enable you to buy more games and it will save you tons of money.

This is making the HUGE assumption that Gamestop will still be taking in used games after this policy is introduced, or be paying you nearly as much as they currently do for used games sales. I highly doubt either will happen. I am just waiting to see how Gamestop and other major retailers or game rental service providers respond to this. This could be severe for MS if they receive backlash from Gamestop, who are essentially the ones who would be advertising and selling their consoles. It may even cause them to pick sides with PS4 if they don't have this type of restriction. I mean Gamestop's main business is used games.

From my perspective, i'm all for this.

Hey, if you buy used, the fee will still make it cheaper then paying full price.

But in the end, its to encourage smart buying and keeping what you own.

No big deal here people.

what about people like me who rent games cause 60$ is a lot of money and i can't buy every game that comes out

Id say wait a year for the price to go down and the used prices will be even lower.

But I wouldn't exactly call gamers a patient people......the industry is built upon impulse buying. We shall see how MS addresses the renting issue in the future I suppose

This isn't just about buying used. People lend and borrow games all the time. Now... not really likely to happen with the XBox One...

If I go to a family member's or a friend's and want to show them that new game I just got, I need to bring my console with me as well. And... with Kinect being mandatory for the console to work, and the actual console being as big as a coffee table, I wouldn't call that portable friendly.

it's probably not always on. It's probably like steam which requires it to be activated.

yeah, but in PC you dont need to activate with steam or be online, as long as you have the disk.  But in this case in order to play a game it needs to be installed, and in order to do that in needs to be registed with your account, so if you dont have internet to register the game, you cant play.

That's actually an issue with steamworks games (A lot of Disk copies come with a code you must activate on steam in order to play). You have to register it once online, then you can play offline and install it on infinity computers and play those offline too. But you must register online with some games. Any game that requires steamworks, which is basically SE Games, 2K games, Bethesda Games. Ubisoft Games Require Uplay, as and EA games require Origin. (Both with requirements like steam even for disk copies).

I do think this hurts the value of games, as I don't buy games at 50 dollars on PC unless I'm really excited. But games on PC seem to drop a bit faster and lower and unless you're an annoying company are 10 dollars cheaper than console games, but then you can't resell. With console games I buy games at 60 dollars a bit more liberally, because I can resell it for 50 dollars on ebay if its a piece of crap.

That's what my guess for this model to be based on. Blame PC Games :P.

Not really. Gamestop would not be inclined to give anywhere near the amount you paid for the game, seeing as consumers will need to pay a fee for the game to work. Also, there might be a limit to how many times a disk can be activated.

There's unlikely to be a limit as there would be no way to check if the limit has been reached. Xbox One games are designed to be resold. They aren't working against Gamestop, they are working WITH them.

Sure it sucks that lending to a friend isn't possible without them paying a fee, but hey, they'll get the full game and its likely to be much lower than buying it yourself.

this is an outrage

the open brazeness that microsoft is doing this makes me bekieve sony will be doing the same

all games must be installed to HD lol

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I wonder how Gamestop is gonna react to this. will M$ allow them to sell "used game passes" in their store? Actually, how much is the fee gonna be, anyway? 5 bucks I wouldn't mind, but $15 would be a deal breaker.

Ya I agree, details are just too sketchy at this point

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

.......n-nn-NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Reported on Wired too -

"Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc."

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/05/xbox-one-analysis/

This is interesting. Purchase a new game at $60, and share it with a friend who pays the $10-15 dollar fee. Split the total cost ($70-75). Both now own the game, paying $35-37.50 each. Now, let's share it with more friends and split the total cost...

Maybe it will cost 20-30+ dollars.  Its likely that you will only be able to share/reuse the disk a limited number of times (once or twice?).
