Forums - Sales - January 2008 Hardware: Annualized

I thought some people would like to see the annualized version of the January 2008 sales numbers. The methodology is fairly trivial, being that a typical year will have (roughly) 40% of the hardware sales occur in November and December a non-holiday week represents (approximately) 1.36% of the yearly hardware sales.

The "Adjusted Annualized" data is what you get if you eliminate the week ending January 5th due to its unusually high hardware sales for all platforms.

Limitations:

  • Typically January is a slow portion of the year and the anual sales should (for the most part) end up being higher than this
  • The Wii was supply limited through out the month so its anual sales should end up being higher than this

That's an interesting way of looking at it. Thanks for the numbers. You are the Don of the Digits.

Nice man, good job it seems very accurate.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

how did you get the annualized? You did not just multiply by 52 did you?

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

looks great thx for putting it together.

I wasn't trying to make any predictions because there are too many unknowns at this point in time; price reductions alone could cause some noticeable changes in how the systems are selling. What the analysis (essentailly) says is that if January is representative of how the systems will sell through out the year then we should expect the totals you mentioned. As the year goes on, we should be able to have a more accurate forcast by using year to date totals to project annual totals.

Nice way of looking at it.

My personal guesses would put the DS, PSP and 360 lower than what you have, and the Wii higher.

still WAY too early in the year to 'Annualize' anything.

wait until an AAA games come out and then you will see what a console can really sell. Just look at what Halo 3 did for Xbox, and wait to see what SSBB and MGS4 will do to Wii and PS3.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

All the consoles should do much better this year, because price cuts are on the way. Expect a $199 Wii, a $299 PS3 and a $299 360 for holiday season 2008.
