Too be perfectly honest, I think they chose putting their huge tent up on the campus was simply because it was an easy, cheap and still effective option.

It's large enough, it's in controlled in their own yard, and going by BUILD 2012 it should still look proffesional on the inside.

The population on these forums was much more pronounced many years ago, but they were largely purged by biased moderators. The population sadly has never recovered from that debacle, and this community got a bad reputation. I think it is more of a "bring us down to earth moment", renting a huge arena just for an Product announcement wouldn't really help the product now would it?
Plus ït should give the folks going to the conference a nice coozy feel too :P you know everybody loves tents and it would have some nice ventilation too.
