I'm not sure where you are looking but I'm staring right at Nintendo and the Indie scene. And all I see is originality.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

no. there are a lot of new original IP's that came out recently and that are coming out. TLoU, Puppeteer, Dishonored, journey, rain, to the moon, bioshock, beyond two souls and many more. it really depends on where you look

OP complains about sequel after sequel.

People recommend Nintendo.

wat.

The big games of 2013 so far would tell a mixed story: Tomb Raider's Uncharted counter-cloning, God of War Ascension and Gears of War Judgment both being impacted by franchise fatigue, then on the flipside you have BioShock Infinite and Fire Emblem: Awakening, neither of which are "original" IPs, but both of whom try to stretch their wings and do different things in other ways. Same goes for Revengeance, not an original idea, but a good new spin on things.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I saw that too and just laugh a little lol.

PS. To be clear I'm not against sequels.. I think they are good for the consoles.

Sequels are the Cash Cows but there is a ton of originality out there. You just gotta find it plz.

And as long as the sequels are fresh and original - I will continue to recommend -

- although this is probably bait and I've been told not to take anything you say seriously

Well, you can't claim that Nintendo (for better or for worse in a lot of cases) is not trying to constantly re-invent the wheel in its franchises. It may all be Metroid, but Metroid II is not Metroid Prime is not Prime Hunters is not Other M. Similarly Super Mario World is not Super Mario Galaxy, and each generation of Zelda is hard to recognize compared to before. Then there was StarFox...

It's really only Pokemon. And Kirby.

well, firstly I disagree.
Mass Effect is not very original...the market is inundated with scifi titles, and it's basically oblivion in space.
And Jet Grind Radio came out last gen, not this one.
As far as new creative titles, look no further than:
Journey -new spin on multiplayer
Flower -original idea
8Bit trip -great collection of fun, indie creativity
Pixeljunk -same
Minecraft -brand new ip, creative
Heavy Rain -new spin on storytelling
LA Noire -An open world detective game
Sleeping Dogs- Honk Kong themed open world game (none other in the industry)
New Bungie game, Destiny- MMO FPS
DUST514- a game that actually interacts with a pc game counterpart
The wii in its entirety was this gen full of new experiences
Eyepet
Kinect dancegames
Red Dead Redemption -old west open world
Upcoming game "among dreams" -where you play as a baby, first person horror
The atelier series
Valkyria Chronicles -a third person turn based strategy game set in wartime (with anime)
NinoKuni - a game that feels like an anime come to life
Borderlands 2- A fresh take on the fallout/oblivion type of open world
Demon's Souls- a throwback to a forgotten era of difficulty that refreshed a whole genre of medieval inspired third person adventure
Stacking- a puzzle game set in the industrial era, where characters are matryoshka dolls
Portal- a game about teleporting around while being heckled by a funny robot villainess
