Because by my estimate is is currently over 100p ahead of Smash 4 combined at the same point in time. Ultimate is about three weeks ahead of Smash 4 and showing signs of picking up. Why the anxiety about Ultimates performance, when so far, by all metrics it is doing great?

It's ahead now, but it's falling behind more and more each week. It's picking up steam but BARELY. If the 3DS version is picking up steam faster than Ultimate by itself, what happens when the Wii U version picks up steam too? Those 100 points it's ahead by won't matter much when you consider it's 1/10 of the 1042 points it needs to surpass Smash 4 at this point. It's just a tiny buffer, nothing more. Momentum is what matters, and it seems Nintendo Online might have killed that.

I'd say rather than the online, it's Pokémon that is stealing sales, as both are releasing very close to each other, so many gamers will have to choose between both games. Additionally, Super Mario Party is about to come out, so that game has priority right now. What other big games released close to Smash 3DS on the platform?

Also, I don't think the Smash bundle is included in those numbers (same story for the Pokémon let's go bundles btw), lowering the points even more.

Maybe its the console bundle that some consumers are attracted to.

It is main series according to the developers, but a "branching of paths" if you will,targeted towards attracting newer casual player and next years game will be more traditional aimed at the more hardcore players.
