It's pretty horrible for both Monster Hunter and Sword Art Online to be honest. Both over-saturated on their respective consoles at this point.

Didn't do well? It handily outsold Memories of Celceta, so I'd call that a pretty good performance. |
but thinking that in Japan mobile gaming is stronger than home gaming, i wouldn't call it good. even if ys 8 will sell 40k on ps4 i wouldn't call it good. hope it can sell more than 100k...

How big do you think this franchise is lol?
Ys Seven (PSP) - 33,449 / 70,280
Ys I & II Chronicles (PSP) - 18,660 / 31,456
Ys Oath in Felghana (PSP) - 11,667 / 32,220
Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki (PSP)- 30,047 / 42,220
Ys Memories of Celceta (PSV) - 42,146 / 67,323
Ys VIII (PSV) - 43,753 / 69,878
The Vita version of Ys VIII alone has pretty much outsold all the previous entries (and that number isn't up to date, it's just the last time it charted in Media Create top 20), plus there's a PS4 version to hoover up any extra sales.
In a time where nearly every franchise in Japan is on a moderate to steep decline, why do you have such high expectations for this one in particular?

can't really say why, i know that you mean games like ff that really saw a weaker numbers, but games linke persona were doing better than expected, so maybe it's because oft this i'm hoping it will do good in ps4, and because it's falcom's famoust IP. but thanks for searching for the sale numbers oft the last entrys. was really suprised they didn't better. did you know how much were the sales for ys 6 in the ps2? was the only i played, but i liked it very much...

A 900k launch for a non-mainline title being considered horrible really shows just how big the franchise is in the first place...
Bet with PeH:
I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.
Bet with WagnerPaiva:
I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

These are Famitsu numbers, but it's the best I can do:
Ys: Ark of Napishtim - 22,826 / 37,325
Also, Ys isn't Falcom's most famous IP, Legend of Heroes is. By a long long way. Ys is their longest running, but Legend of Heroes has been the better seller for at least a decade now. And that game is getting a PS4-exclusive entry, so you can see how well that will do then (hint: it'll need to be selling around 150k FW to match the previous two games).

Never said it wasn't big, but it's all relative. This is a "non-mainline" title that has gameplay; system and content nearly exactly the same as the mainline entries that's shedding another 500k buyers from the previous release. That's like a third of the userbase of the previous game. It's not a disaster, but it's certainly not sustainable for what is supposed to be one of the biggest franchises in Japan.
I continue to be imressed with Mario Karts deluxes performance. It's probably going to lead the chart once MonHun leaves in 5 days.
