They're pushing the game with plenty of trailers; amiibo support; anime series etc.  I'd say they're expecting a lot from the game.

I don't remember exactly, but someone here said that expectations from Capcom for this game are way below the main entries sales-wise.

If it's true or not, I don't know.

There's a small possibility that the anime series may catch on, Youkai Watch style, and push this game to great heights.  As it stands right now, ehh.

Can't find anything about their expectations for Monster Hunter Stories.  People speculating it's the 2m prediction they made in May, but I doubt it.

Cant remember exactly. But I think it was around 500k to 1mil.

Yeah, I remember it being below 1M.
