Guild Wars 2 is a really bad game and is struggling ALOT more than WoW is. They dont have enough players for the RvR queues. Its a really overated and actually really boring and pointless game if you play for more than 2 weeks. Anyways look here at an indicator: http://www.xfire.com/games GW2 has 2 times less customers and is free. Good for the consumer? yes. Are they making good money? Doubtful.
Have to say though, that the market is now getting lots of free to play MMO's and the sub model will not surive for much longer. This is the year where the giant tumbles. Theres no new expansion in sight to inflate the umbers and if things carry on at this pace the game will be down to 4mil by the end of the year. Their numbers were always inflated because of their eastern sales. Now that that market seems to be changing focus the game is finally in its last legs. Actually, it has been for a very long time. Its an old and tired game and a "WoW2" has been in need for a very long time. Press that reset button and solve all the intricate issues with the game. It needs a revamp of the combat, graphics and questing system. |
Not sure what RvR (Race vs Race?) is but if you mean WvW there are plenty of people. Guild Wars 2 also has a lot of cosmetic items for you to purchase using gems. My wife's been playing it non-stop since release and has enjoyed it quite a bit. They seem to be happy with the sales and the amount of cosmetic purchases are staggering. But hey, It's all an opinion: You feel the game is boring and over rated and she loves it. I think I'll go with my wifes opinion over someone on VGChartz :)
It's just that simple.

because nobody is defending it... unfortunately

It's not that surprising. As I recall they're down to about ~12M Players from a high of ~19 right?
They drop off and hope for new expansions to buoy them back up for a little bit.
They've been going on for so long it can't last forever.
As for the next WOW.... I don't think there will be.

Alright, but do realise you're a person on VGChartz aswell. Bit of a contradiction there. xD
But i dont ask you to believe me. Thats why i had a link. And yes Realm versus Realm is what i meant.

19m players? O_o
This article seems to think the all-time-high was > 12 million.

Yes but you see the importance of my significant other :)
How many hours have you put in GW2?
I'm just saying, the death of GW2/not making them money is a myth, look at their financials. The servers are populated, but not as bad as they were around launch. You can't expect them to be as full as they once were. Guild Wars doesn't have the name/brand power that Blizzard has with WoW.
They have outright said they don't have expansions planned yet, rather FREE content that is delivered every few months. Had the 8 bit event, Flame vs Frost, etc. When base is content with the updates and not begging for a expansion they must be doing something right.
The makers of GW2 realized catering to their audience is more profitable, and once the demand for the expansion is there it will happen. I can gurantee you that no one is complaining about free content and bi-weekly balancing and keeping the servers up and running and well tuned.
Also, yes, unless your name is Blizzard chances are you can't survive on a full pay to play model, rather a free to play one with some other ways to entice people to pay. Hell, even Starwars dropped off after a few months because of lack of content in just a few months. What has been successful in the monthly payment business model outside of WOW and KOTOR for a short time? Can't think of anything as of recent, just going way back to my Everquest and Ultima Online day.
I'm not here to convince anyone that GW2 is a great game. There were plenty of chances for "free weekends" for people to see if It's worth the one time fee of $30-60 (hell at one time it was even $20 around the holidays in the US). I'm just saying that It's far from dead, and It's also not good to rely on xfire/raptr/any other stat tracker to see how well It's doing because your relying on people using those services just to give us info. If that's the case, then the PS3 should be number #1 world wide with the way It's discussed on here.

Plus, GW2 is advertised to allow people to just play it alone. Yes, it's a MMO. But I rather just play MMO's with a few friends and that's it. It doesn't really force you to join anything you don't want. So that's why the verse modes are ignored. People go for the story. I love the species and character customizations. Games like STO lack this. The game had to sell decently. They push ads on fair amount of websites. That's how I found out about it.

Thats really not the experience i've had at all. My whole guild from GW1 went on GW2 and left it within a few weeks. I finished the game all the way. When hitting level cap there is nothing worthwhile doing. I thought the combat system was terrible, especially compared to the original. You auto-attack most of the time and theres little choice in terms of skills. The loss of healers also made the game a giant zerg on all things PvE and PvP.
I have the game, i was really looking forward to it because i was a huge GW1 fan, but GW2 was just terrible. Hopefully they work on GW3 and fix those mistakes next. Also the servers are incredibly empty compared to those initial months. If you look on the link a gave. GW2 was on 20 thousand+ hours a day wheres nowadays they are on 8k and droped from the top 5. If you read the forums you can pretty much see the people who are still around saying that the game is plainly boring.
Happy that your significant half enjoys it though. At least shes getting her money's worth whereas i feel like i wasted mine. ^^
