pikmin 3 started as a wii project that got moved to wii u. actual developing time is much less than that.

metroid prime was a trilogy that already ended. a new game with the same style wouldn't be called prime.
I would love Banjo Threeie and Jet Force Gemini developed by retro. If only micro f#ckin soft would sell those franchises back. seriously, what's the point of owning those franchises and doing nothing/destroying them? looking at you Nuts and Bolts.

I still reckon there's room to break new ground in those series. For instance, maybe make them not just a rail-shooter/racer? expand into a new subgenre perhaps? |
I agree if they were to go that route than Retro is as good as any other team to do it

We know Iwata was looking for a studio to take over the IP anyway. |
There's a chance that they are working on a Star Fox game. However I have a little theory: NintendoLand.
NintendoLand is a great game for marketing future releases. Pikmin was there, Yoshi was there (to market Yoshi Yarn, and Yoshi's Story 3DS), Luigi's Mansion minigame (to market Luigi's Mansion 2), maybe the DK crash course for DKC Returns for the 3DS, Animal Crossing for the upcoming 3DS game. So the Metroid minigame is use for marketing a new Metroid game, and that might as well be Retro's game.
There's the rumor that the guys who made Nano Assault Neo (can't remember their names) are working on a new F-Zero game, so that might be the reason why a F-Zero game is present in NintendoLand.
There are no Star Fox minigames in NintendoLand, so if my theory is correct we might not see a new installment, at least not yet.

It was tragic seeing the sequel to masterpieces Banjo Kazooie and Tooie turn out to be so miserably mediocre.

that's really possible considering the number of new employees they got last year. there's also the rumor they're developing an engine that makes full use of wii u capabilities as well as developing a game with it. if that engine was made available to third party's for free/low price it would be great.

While your Nintendoland theory has merit, the new Wii U game by Shin'en is almost certainly FAST Racing League 2, not F Zero. Over the last two years they've been updating/following up their Wiiware games, and FAST is next in line. That's what their tweet was referring to, I'd bet money on it. Shin'en are a four man studio, as talented as they are, they don't have the manpower for something like F Zero.
While everything points to a new Prime at this point, I really can't help but be disappointed it's not F-Zero or Star Fox. I was already sick of the series well before I even completed 2. I didn't even finish 3 at all.
Oh well, the graphics will certainly be something at least.
